Players of the Round:
Sienna Hall (U14 Girls) – Sienna is a powerhouse on defense . She works hard to get back and get in front on defense and stop her player. Always coming across to help her teammates if needed and make life hard for the opposition. You can always rely on her to box out strong for rebounds. She is always wearing a cheeky grin and encouraging her teammates.

Odin Amundsen (U18 Boys) – Odin impacted the game at a high level on both ends of the floor. It was rewarding to see him start to attack the game with a level of assertiveness that we have been drawing out of him over the last few months.

Loss against Rockingham Flames (24 – 42)

Coaches notes

This game was tough as Flames were a much taller team than us. This did not stop us from doing our absolute best. The girls gave it their all on defense against the Flames girls, keeping up with them and even outrebounding them. Their efforts didn’t go unnoticed in the third quarter as we were neck in neck with the undefeated team! Unfortunately, in the fourth quarter, Flames showed us why they’re undefeated and were able to blow out the lead. Although it was a loss, I am still proud of the way we played. The girls showed me their strong perseverance and how much we are improving. Plus, we are getting much better at team basketball!! Good job girls, keep working hard, the wins will certainly come later!

Player of the game

Lennox Daley! Lenny was on fire from the sound of the first siren. She was fantastic on both O and D, blocking the tallest on court (as one of the shortest) three times!! On offence, Len shared and controlled the ball well creating good shot opportunities to get us back into the game. Good job Lenny, your hard work never goes unnoticed!!

Won against Rockingham Flames (45 – 26)

Coaches notes

The girls have walked away in yet another high with another win. After an average start, as per the norm it seems on the last few games, the girls slowly came together in the 2nd and continued to go from strength to strength. As we approached the 3rd quarter, noticeably seeing the growing talent amongst the girls and the girls finding their feet, together they continued to move the ball up the court as a team. Achieving success with each steal, they continued ball pressure to gain possession and opportunities to the ring. These girls continue to deliver again and again.
Win or lose, success is in the team development and team growth and these girls are definitely on the right path.
Congrats girls – you’re all amazing as always x

Player of the game

Winter-Rose Berner
Winter-Rose has continued to go from strength to strength on the court. Not only is she unstoppable with the rebounds, her drive and push to give 110% is noticeable with her success on the court. Encouragement for her to use her strengths to gain success on the court, was visible this week with 20 points on the scoreboard, numerous rebounds/blocks and assists. It was definitely an exciting sight to see.
Congrats Winter-Rose , well deserved Player of the Round.

Loss against Rockingham Flames (44 – 58)

Coaches notes

The defensive pressure was not at our usual level and this led to too many easy baskets for Rockingham, who continually broke our backcourt defense with ease. We also struggled on offence for the first three quarters, troubled for the second week in a row by a half court trap. This is definitely something we will work on in training this week. Turnovers from bad passes meant that we were constantly on the back foot. One bright spot was the season high 21 points we scored in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately this only cut the deficit from 24 to 14 for the final margin.

Loss against Lakeside Lightning (38 – 62)

Coaches notes

Lakeside came out with intensity, and clear intent to win. They set the tone early, applying full-court pressure, playing with relentless hustle on both ends.

The second quarter was particularly tough. Our inbound execution broke down repeatedly and Lakeside capitalised on nearly every mistake.

To our credit, the boys responded well in the third quarter. We found some momentum, tightening up on defense, and executed better offensively. Malachi and Zerene brought strong defensive energy, especially when we extended pressure in the backcourt. This, coupled with some well-executed shooting from Harry, made for a competitive quarter.

Unfortunately, in the fourth, the defensive intensity collectively wasn’t consistent, and we fell back into old habits: slow transitions, and rushed offensive play.

One clear area for growth is our ability to handle full-court and half-court pressure. We need to clean up our inbound sets and commit, as a group, to breaking the press.

Overall, it was a tough loss but Lakeside showed us what a unified, relentless team effort looks like. We saw glimpses of our potential, but we’ve got to string together four quarters of disciplined, team-first basketball in order to beat such a formidable opponent.

Player of the game

Lennox was dominant on the glass and earned a well-deserved Man of the Match. He anchored us in the paint, consistently battling for rebounds at both ends and providing a strong interior presence. His physicality and defensive energy under the basket set the tone for us during our best stretches, and he played a key role in disrupting Lakeside’s scoring opportunities as well as providing essential, out-letting for us offensively, after some strong boards.

Loss against Perth Redbacks (34 – 87)

Coaches notes

This was not our best game, we’re still however in a development process. We are making some adjustments that will hopefully pay off down the line, so regarding this game, we had our own goals to achieve. The first half of the game saw a serious lapse of focus and intensity once again failing to communicate. Our opposition was also incredibly rough and had us feeling overwhelmed with their trap defense and also getting triple teamed. This is definitely an area of the game we need to work on and get used too!

The second half we took much better care of the ball and grew a lot more confident in letting our shots fly. So a fantastic effort to change the pace from the hammering taken in the first half. Even with a lot of hard fouls taken from the Redbacks, the boys continued working together to better their situation, maintaining their presence to the finish line.

Onto the next one boys!!

Player of the game

Hugh Bodycote!!

In a game where structure was needed, Hugh really stepped up and didn’t give up! The very first play Hugh took a pretty hard hit to the head after scoring the first shot of the game. He came off, recollected himself, then came to me and said, “I WANT back on!” What else are champions made of? When Hugh is on his game there is no stopping him and I honestly don’t know where to put him as he excels everywhere. He also finished off strong with a 3 pointer! Well done mate!!

Coach: Lawrence West

Won against Willetton Tigers (54 – 36)

Coaches notes

This week’s game was one of our most complete efforts to date. We shot a season-best 41.8% from the field and dominated the glass with 22 offensive rebounds, setting the tone early and maintaining control throughout.

Our defensive pressure was outstanding. We forced multiple shot clock violations and came up with 24 steals and deflections, disrupting their rhythm and creating scoring opportunities. Offensively, we moved the ball well and attacked the paint with purpose. Our ability to draw fouls and get to the line was a standout, but free throws remain our biggest area for improvement, 9/25 cost us easy points.

Overall, it was a strong team performance with less panic and more poise. Each week we’re building stronger habits and a clearer identity.

Player of the game

Lots of cases this week with multiple players stepping up, but I just couldn’t go past the leadership of Stephanie Evans.

Steph led by example with a composed and selfless performance that helped anchor our group. She finished with 6 assists, 5 rebounds, and 7 deflections, while providing constant talk on defense. Her voice, poise, and smart decision-making helped keep us calm and connected. In a game full of hustle, it was her leadership that shone. Brilliant effort, Steph!

Loss against Cockburn Cougars (20 – 30)

Coaches notes

This morning’s 8am home game against Cockburn was a real arm wrestle — physical, intense and defensively driven from start to finish. Both teams applied heavy pressure, making scoring difficult across all four quarters.

We held a narrow 5-3 lead after the first quarter, and by halftime the scores were tied at 14 apiece. In the third, we struggled to convert despite creating more chances. Poor shot selection under pressure cost us, and the fourth quarter followed a similar pattern. Defensively, we were outstanding, but our hard work was not reflected on the scoreboard.

The girls showed they are a defensive force, and now it is about bringing that same intensity and composure to the offensive end. We need to value possessions and stay calm in key moments.

Sandra Chan and Eliza Prevett led the scoring and delivered important baskets when we needed them most. Both worked tirelessly and showed great leadership throughout the game.

We played a strong brand of team basketball, but our passing and decision making late in the game need improvement. The effort is there — now we focus on execution.

Plenty to take from this one, and we will keep building.

Player of the game

This week’s Player of the Game goes to Jennifer Rando for her standout performance. In her best game to date, she stayed composed under pressure and made a strong impact at both ends of the floor. Her effort was outstanding and deserved more reward for effort. She led with maturity and set the tone for the team throughout the match.

Special mentions to Indigo for her relentless defensive pressure, Hannah for her growing confidence on offence, Zara for always putting the team first, Amelia for her strong blocking and rebounding, and Sandra Chan for her excellent work on the boards.

Won against Mandurah Magic (29 – 42)

Coaches notes

This week saw us face the challenge of an 8am tip off and making sure we were switched on ready to go. To their credit, while it wasn’t the cleanest of games, at times they showed some moments that executed what we had been working on. They were looking for teammates up the court in offence and moving well off the ball to create space. They continued on from last week winning all 4 qtrs on the rebound count and defending strong. It’s such a pleasure to see all the work these girls put in at training pay off. They fought hard with a couple girls getting in foul trouble and others not at full strength, coming off illness during the week. But at the end of the day, they brought home the win for us. Well done girls.

Player of the game

Sienna is a powerhouse on defense . She works hard to get back and get in front on defense and stop her player. U14 Boys Orange
Coach: Ben Marks

Loss against Joondalup Wolves (50 – 53)

Coaches notes

Another heartbreaking loss for the boys, this time in overtime. Some injuries and sickness in the team meant we were somewhat underhanded for the game. The game was an extremely even contest throughout with both teams going basket for basket most of the contest, with the lead not getting above 3 until the 4th quarter, where we gained a 10-point lead. We had some offensive lapses and let them back into the game. With the game tied and 7 seconds left, we had the opportunity to win the game and like last week, were unable to score. Overtime ensued and our opponents continued their momentum, taking a 5-point lead before a huge three point shot from Henry got us back within 2. With Joondalup holding the ball, we were forced to foul, and they converted free throws making it impossible for us to get a lead back.

There were some great signs from the team moving forward including our ability to be resilient and battle physically against some bigger, slightly older teams. Our physicality and transition decision making were focused on at training and showed in the game. We will continue to build this week and consistently work on our weakness, which will result in some success moving forward into the first half of the season. Chin up boys!

Player of the game

Player of the round this week is Cohen. He never takes a play off and his constant energy on the court is infectious. He does it so consistently week in and week out, it sometimes is taken for granted, but this week was his strongest game of the season on both ends. Diving on the floor for loose balls, getting in the passing lanes, rebounding, cutting with purpose and finishing strong at the basket. An amazing game Cohen, you should always be proud of the effort you give out on the floor.

U14 Boys White
Coach: Dave Gan

Won against Joondalup Wolves (64 – 40)

Coaches notes

We came out with blistering intensity and never looked back, leading the game from start to finish. From the onset, we had a game plan to have Hayden and Kian, along with Damon, rotating through to face guarding their 2 biggest threats. It was a treat to watch them get frustrated and resort to some non basketball action play.

We won every quarter, even as they tried to match our physicality. With nine strong players this game, we maintained control. By midway through the third, we had built a 28–30 point lead, which allowed us to ease off the intensity. At that point, Coach Mark and I gave the boys the freedom to call their own plays and just enjoy themselves out on the court.

We had a strong showing from Medhi this week with some toughness and ZERO turnovers as one of our guards. Isaac had some nice drives and steals, as well as passes. Kian, Damon & Hayden combined for what can’t be seen on the stat sheet, by smothering their biggest threats.

It was the usual excellence from Kobe and Preston – and by “usual,” we don’t mean it goes unappreciated. They’ve set such a consistently high standard week in and week out that performances like this have become the expectation. Both would easily earn an A or B+ for this game.

HUGE game for Brodie with 17pts, 6 Reb on 80% FG. Austin double double 10pts, 14reb, 4 blocks & 0TO.

Player of the game

Austin with his first double-double of the season and narrowly edged out his teammate Brodie for Player of the Game this week. His 14 rebounds were HUGE , and adding 4 blocks with ZERO turnovers really set him apart. It’s always tough to choose when two players are equally deserving, but in the end, those blocks and zero turnovers gave Austin the edge.

Won against Mandurah Magic (78 – 49)

Coaches notes

We got back to our brand of basketball this week with a nice bounce back off of a loss to the other Mandurah team last week.

Started with a relatively back and forth first quarter with Oli knocking down a 3 to end the period. Our defense led the way with a run of stops and transition points to complete the first half.

The third quarter effort is where we won this game. Pushed the pace from the get go, creating turnovers with our press and running the floor early, resulting in a 26 point period.

The bench guys were huge this weekend, came on the floor and almost outscored the whole Mandurah team starting with their smothering defense.

Player of the game

Player of the round was Isaac Data.

This will be Isaac’s second player of the round award and for good reason. Coming off the bench this week, leading our second group and scoring 25 points with a couple of 3’s to go along with it. A rebounding machine as always and playing great defense without fouling out this week!

This was Isaac’s best game with the squad so far and he has so much more to give.

Shout outs to Declan and James with double digit scores and playing well as always. Also Will and Oli coming off the bench getting buckets and playing incredible defense.

Won against Cockburn Cougars (65 – 61)

Coaches notes

Unfortunately, I could not be there this week but my Assistant Coach and Team Manager, Jorja and Paul, did such a wonderful job of getting the girls over the line

We had a pretty even contribution across the board with 4 players in double figures. This was an aggressive game (3 of our girls fouled out) trying to make up for what happened last week. It’s good to see a bit of mental fortitude and being able to fight through what was a tough, tight game all the way.

Despite getting ahead by 10 points a couple of times, Cockburn nailed some really important buckets when they counted and kept the game really tight, so it was pleasing to see that the girls fought through those moments instead of dropping their heads.

Congratulations to JMac on her first win as a WABL coach!!

Player of the game

This week’s player of the game is Ella Michalczuk. We’ve been working on Ella‘s shot selection making sure she gets in and around the rim a little bit more, and she’s slowly getting better and better. Her contribution on the boards, as well as her interior defense, really are a credit to her and our team. Well done Ella.

Won against Mandurah Magic (37 – 33)

Coaches notes

We made the long drive down to Mandurah for an afternoon clash with the Magic. The game started slow, with both teams struggling to score. Our girls managed to take an early lead in the first quarter and held a narrow advantage throughout the game. The match was a defensive arm-wrestle, with neither team able to score with ease. Though we struggled to get baskets, we locked in on defense, forming a wall of help defenders. The Magic were forced into difficult shots as a result of our Suns girls sticking to the game plan.

Once again, we played well in the closing minutes, seeing through the game with smart and controlled execution at both ends. The girls should be pleased with their ability to get the win despite an off-shooting day.

Player of the game

Sonja Heyman: Sonja was crucial as a defender and rebounder. Her always smart and court-aware presence connected our help defense and was the glue for the team. Sonja dominated the boards, repeatedly ripping down rebounds amongst a sea of opposition players. She helped us win the possession game, which in a low scoring clash, was the key to our success. Sonja, you demonstrated how we can rely on effort and execution to pull us through tough situations. Well done, Sonja!

Loss against Rockingham Flames (68 – 71)

Coaches notes

This week in our game against Rockingham, the girls had 7 players due to injures, and played an incredible game to be up by 20 points at one stage. Their defensive pressure was incredible all game. Unfortunately 4 girls fouled out of the game with 3 minutes to go, leaving us with 3 players, but Rockingham couldn’t score against the girls even with 3. It was an absolutely amazing effort from all the girls, who didn’t drop their heads and kept playing right to the end, which also earned them praises from the opposing teams coach.

Player of the game

Tamzin Wilsmore is the player of this round. Tamzin was relentless on defense the whole game, while dishing out assists to her teammates and also top scored with 16 points. She kept her positive energy on court while playing and also on the bench, where she supported her teammates.

Player of the game

Lucy Rechichi who was a rock in defense, especially when the other team had 2 much taller players.

U16 Boys Black
Coach: Bruno Kongawoin

Loss against Cockburn Cougars (66 – 75)

Coaches notes

This week’s loss was a tough pill to swallow. In a game we should have controlled from the outset, we instead delivered our most disappointing performance of the season.

Despite a slow start and missing several easy put-backs, we managed to hold a six-point lead midway through the first quarter. Once the Cougars clawed their way back to level scores and took the lead, we struggled to respond and never truly recovered.

As always, the effort was there, but we failed to play with the smarts required at this level. A staggering 41 turnovers and continued poor shooting both from the floor and the free throw line made it near impossible to regain any momentum.

Ryker Phillips was once again a beacon of consistency, putting in a full four-quarter effort and leading all scorers with 19 points, 3 steals, and 5 rebounds.

Prince Balila had a strong finish, capping off the game with his first double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds, most of it coming in an impactful final quarter. Tadiwa Rukodzi had a quieter outing, finishing with 13 points.

Next week, we face the Joondalup Wolves, a matchup that will truly show us where we stand against the best in this year’s regular season.

Player of the game

This week’s Player of the Round came down to a coin toss between two outstanding performances and Prince Balila gets the nod.

Prince stepped up, delivering his first double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds, most of it coming in a strong final quarter push.

Prince’s presence on both ends of the floor has grown in the last 2 games. His best is still to come and he will be a real force to be reckoned with.

Well done, Prince…

Loss against East Perth Eagles (73 – 100)

Coaches notes

Today we were simply outsized and outplayed in most facets of the game. First quarter was a free flowing offensive affair with both teams scoring almost at will. Unfortunately, we were unable to slow down East Perth’s scoring during the middle two periods and found the going tough on our offensive end with many good looks bouncing out. The last quarter saw us limit East Perth to only 13 points, outscoring them by 8 to bring some respectability back to the score-line. Tough game but we will learn from it and come out better and stronger next week.

Player of the game

Elisha Dixon – Was aggressive on the offensive end finishing with 16 points. Has been playing well all season and was nice to see his efforts rewarded on the scoresheet.

U16 Boys White
Coach: Derek Quayle

Won against Mandurah Magic (77 – 65)

Coaches notes

The first quarter was clearly our worst quarter of the season and in every area, which left us 14 points behind. Both offense and defense were really poor, but the positive from there was we re-adjusted and set ourselves for the grind to get back in the game. We won the remaining 3 quarters and got back to our way of playing for the remainder of the game to grind out a 12 point win.

What has been pleasing so far this season is that we are winning in different ways, which will hold us in good stead for the remainder of the season.

Ronron led the way with 18 points, Edzon who started for us today scored 14. Marcus had a poor first half but re-grouped in the second half to score 10. Ben and Lukah both chipped in with 9 each.

Player of the game

Roentgen Pastor takes out the player of the game this week. He led all scorers with 18 and even though he was in foul trouble early, was able to re-group and lead our team to victory.

Loss against South West Slammers (83 – 88)

Coaches notes

Sunday had the Team trek to Bunbury to play South West. Our Friday night practice was very productive & the scrimmage against Suns White prepared us for Sunday’s match-up. Our slow start had us leaving points on the table from poor finishing & uncommitted attacks. The Slammers presented difficult problems for us to solve, and we were down 22 at the half… but not outclassed. I suspect if we finished better in the first half, we’d have produced the upset of the season. Essentially, it was a game of two halves. South West won the first half & we won the second. Despite the disappointment of the loss, I can’t, in any way fault the effort to battle to the end. I absolutely love that spirit & it’s inspiring to see the underdogs week-in, week-out give their best. Credit to Atticus & Sam for scrapping with much bigger opposition whilst hitting the scoreboard. Shout out to Korbyn for relentless pressure, Billy for improved positivity, Will & Adam for rebounding like demons & to Artin for his improvement in sticking to our systems. Reuben & Ethan were given tough defensive assignments & however difficult they were, they persevered. The guys are becoming better basketballers every week. Well done Suns Blue.

Player of the game

Player of the week could easily have gone to several players. We had contributions in each position & every player hit the scoreboard. Artin had a productive scoring outing, Atticus controlled the offensive tempo & Will battled out of position for much of the day. However, player of the game is awarded to Kyan. This young man gives us everything he has! He’s an untapped talent & as we learn to utilize him correctly, he will be even more dangerous. His speed is electric, his interaction with his Team-mates is always positive & he will be a big part of our success this season. I love seeing Kyan smile on the court & if he’s having a good time – I am too! Great game Kyan.

Coaches notes

We entered the game shorthanded with only 8 players, but hopeful of a competitive showing against a Redbacks team just above us on the ladder.

We started well, getting on the scoreboard first and were within 2 points at quarter time. In the second the Redbacks started to control the keyway, outrebounding and outscoring us in the paint, leading to a 10 point halftime deficit.

The third quarter was a problem for us again, as Redbacks extended their lead by 13. Despite an improved effort in the fourth quarter, we weren’t able to close the gap.

Despite the final score, I was pleased with the significant growth and determination our girls showed in what was a frustrating game. Offensively, our ball movement was better as we consistently generated good shots.

Loss against Perth Redbacks (77 – 84)

Coaches notes

The team showed strong moments of offensive rhythm and defensive hustle, even managing to take a second-half lead. However, our defensive lapses including giving up multiple clutch threes and transition buckets, coupled with some offensive execution challenges, saw us lose control in the closing minutes.
The game was closely contested through three quarters, and we had strong presence from a good spread of contributors across the day. If not for some interesting disparity in the consistency of calls and those defensive lapses, we should have taken the W home.
We did see some real growth in the TRUST & UNITY of our team across the day, and we are now starting to display a discipline to our offensive & defensive principals for longer periods of the game. The boys are poised for take off and when they do, there will be no holding them back.

Player of the game

As mentioned earlier we had valuable contributions from all of our team this week. Honorable mentions go to Cooper Hewer, Tait Dalton & Joshua Mahama, but our player for the game this week is Odin Amundsen.
Odin impacted the game at a high level on both ends of the floor. It was rewarding to see him start to attack the game with a level of assertiveness that we have been drawing out of him over the last few months.

Coaches notes

We once again struggled to start the game well letting Suns White get out to an early 10 point lead. However, the boys were able to settle and get back to our style of play which shut down their transition scoring, allowing us to finish the quarter up 20 -18. We were then able to control the pace for the rest of the game coming out on top. It was another great team performance with 5 boys getting into double figures and 15 assists. Still a few struggles finishing at the rim but a big improvement on our prior weeks performance in that area.
A great win and it’s fantastic to see the improvement and confidence we are gaining each week.

Player of the game

Lionel is our player of the week. Amazingly his first score didn’t come until midway through the second quarter. He then put on a masterclass only missing one field goal from that point to finish with 22 points. Pleasingly he also contributed 4 assists and his ability to control the floor and setup our offence was fantastic. Easily his best game for us in terms of controlling the floor and great to see his distribution skills also pay off in a big score line.
