WABL Wrap Week 5 – 21/05/23
Round 4
All of our “Player of the Game” superstars will receive a FREE PIZZA from our friends at Domino’s Kalamunda – Thanks Guys!
Players of the round:
Aidan Thompson (U18 Boys) – Aidan Thompson – Played good solid basketball all game, didn’t buy into opposition banter and put all his energy on the court to come away with 19pts with a heap of offensive and defensive rebounds. The way he enforces himself on the game always has huge impact on team.
Neve Spry (U14 Girls) – Neve Spry – Showed what she is capable of by giving us a calm presence with her ball handling and decision making on the offensive end
U12 Girls Black (Lawrence West)
Loss against Southwest Slammers (46 – 55)
Coaches notes
This week we came ready to play. Our intensity was great from the opening tip and we got out to an early lead. Early foul trouble cost us in the 2nd quarter and we put them on the line… a LOT, leaving us with just a 3 point lead at the half.
The foul troubles continued for us throughout the rest of the game and although we put together some great runs to keep us close we just couldnt hang on. Credit to the Slammers for the excellent free throw shooting!
We learnt that everyone in our division is a threat and we need to maximise every possession to be effective.
It was great to see that we can turn it on under pressure and play some excellent basketball when we need it most. With time we will become more comfortable as a group with the pressure and we will be able to sustain this for longer.
Other highlights
No Player of the Game for us this week however I wanted to highlight some candidates that came close:
Yas – 2nd double-double for the season (11 points-10 assists) shooting 50%FG & 100% from the line!
T – T provided calm when we needed it and I was impressed with her ability to slow our offense down and look for scoring opportunities. She made good decisions on when to score and when to pass and also chipped in 11 points, 5 assists and 10 steals!
Bel – After struggling with her shooting over the last couple of games Bel kept the shooters mentality of “the next one will go in” and shot a season high FG% while recording 3 rebounds, 7 assists, 8 steals and 1 block!
Jenny – After challenging Jen in the fourth quarter to give a bit more she stepped up big time. Her activity level was fantastic, her defense was disciplined and she made her first “mars bar” play – Nice work Jen!
U12 Girls Orange (Lizzie Falconbridge)
Bye Round
U12 Girls White (Bruno Kongawoin)
Won against Mandurah Magic (54 – 8)
Coaches notes
The girls were defensively exceptional, playing with their feet and positioning rather than reaching for the steals cutting down the number of personal fouls from last by 70%. The girls kept our turnovers relatively low which is the result of their continued ball handling improvements.
The great takeaway for the week is the girls newly found desire to listen and execute as instructed and the level of competitiveness and the realisation of teamwork.
Player of the game
Hannah Fulton – Great effort on both offense and defense.
Other highlights
It was great to see a couple of players taking leadership on the court.
U12 Boys Black (Lizzie Falconbridge)
Won against Perth Redbacks (55 – 40)
Coaches notes
We started a bit flat this week, but the boys came back hard and really stepped it up in the 3rd quarter. Fourth quarter we dropped off a little, but still managed to play great defence and work as a team to come away with a win. The boys really showed perseverance and ability to push through despite some tough calls.
Special mention to our fabulous parents and spectators for their support and encouragement.
Player of the game
Lewis Aliphon- Lewis was on fire this week. He played solidly the whole game with amazing energy and tight defence. Well done Lewis!
Other highlights
Coaches award went to Zac this week. He showed some great resilience and attitude this week. Despite some tough calls, he was able to keep cool and push through.
U12 Boys Orange (Tim Hart)
Won against Rockingham Flames (62 – 54)
Coaches notes
The team saw improved decision making and increased defensive focus can help them compete with a skilled opponent. Defensive intensity was up this week for all our players, with Suns deflecting the ball 23 times (a season high), compared with 6 for the opposition. The team showed improved decision making in passing and moving the ball up the court safely. Last game there were 42 occasions where we lost the ball (by a pass which was picked off, or where we dribbled into or close to players who were able to steal the ball). This week the number came down to 20, which was 6 less than the opposition (who lost the ball 26 times). This would have been partly due to Flames running a weaker press, as well as the effort put in by the team during training. An area the team has been working on is our foul shooting, we shot 16/30 this week, which beat the 6/18 of the opposition. The 10 point difference in foul shots was enough to give us the win.
Player of the game
Dante – for helping inbound and deliver the ball into the front-court safely in offence, which kept the team calm and helped us find more scoring opportunities. In defence, Dante was quick to apply on-ball pressure to slow the movement of the ball, and help his team mates cover the passing lanes. Dante had top deflections (5), 3 steals and 5 rebounds. In offence, he shot 5 from 9, and picked up an assist.
Other highlights
Great to have the full team available following player injuries and sickness. Player of the game was a difficult choice this week, with the entire team showing improvement and making a positive impact on the game. Kade scored his first 4 points of the season this game, great to see your confidence on the court develop. There were back to back plays where Zane assisted Kade, and then Kade did the same for Zane, very encouraging to see. Declan and Fletcher, you’re showing growing patience in offence, better passing decisions and awareness of spacing – you’re waiting with the ball for space to open up, so you can either drive to score 1v1, pull back/reset and/or assist a team mate. Hunter (14 pts, 4 deflections – 6/8 from the foul line) and Alex (10 pts, 4 assists, 2 deflections, 2/2 from the foul line) made stand-out contributions. Henry and Cohen led the rebounding and steals – 10 rebounds, 5 steals for Henry and 7 rebounds 6 steals for Cohen. Darragh shut down several scoring attempts in the keyway, picked up 3 steals and shot well (shooting 50% from the field and the foul line). Zane continued to provide well-timed passes to team mates, with 2 assists again this week, 3 deflections, 2 steals, 2 rebounds – he did not have the ball stolen from him, and shot 100% from the field.
U12 Boys White (Patrick Massam)
Loss against Mandurah Magic (24 – 56)
Coaches notes
This was a tough and physical game for our players this week as we came up against bigger and older players, and perplexing for the coaches as we tried to work out some of the most bizarre situations, we have faced this season.
From the scoreboard turning on a soundtrack, not even Jack could dance fast enough to, followed by some perplexing calls.
Bruised and battered players for both teams kept the team managers busy.
Offensively while we managed to get some good shots up, we continue to struggle to see the ball go through the net as often as we like.
Defensively we again had a better second half with players keeping in front and making it harder for the Magic to score as easily.
Rebounding is an area we are focusing on improving during the season, and if we jumped on that ball and held on to it, like a kid does a lolly from a pinata at a party, we will reduce some of the second chance opportunities we are giving to the opposition
The boys kept on pushing and even though our legs may not have been as long, they were fast and we certainly had more puff at the end of the game.
We can make improvements by creating options for outside shots, rebounding and being more careful with our passing.
Overall tough game, but was good to see the boys were all smiles not long after the game ended, as we keep them focused on this is a year of learning and building on their skills.
Player of the game
Spencer Massam
U14 Boys Blue (Dave Yan)
Won against Cockburn Cougars (38 – 36)
Coaches notes
A very scrappy game from start to finish, It was one of the rare games where we came out strong early. However, the turnovers yet again prevented us from building on a good start and creating a big lead.
We led majority of the game before the opposition came back to tied the game in the last qrt. The takeaway from this game was how were we going to respond. In our previous loss, we had a 7 point lead heading into the last qrt before the boys got ‘deer in headlight moment’ and lost the game. This time we really found out which player learnt the most from that game and was going to take lead the team fearlessly. The answer for us this game was Kobe, with every run they made he was there aggressively driving to the basket scoring or getting foul. Diving for the ball, hitting the deck multiple times to force a jumpball and stopping the play. A game where there was no real consistency.. we needed something that we won this game as a team, but it was Kobe who kept the ship afloat when we needed it most.
The boys played smart, and we winning our 3 games by a margin of 1, 1, and 2 is helping the boys understand how to play the late game situation in a tight game.
Player of the game
Kobe Gan – On a day where we needed him to score instead of pass.. he did his job and what was asked of him. Kept the team going and allowed the other players to help finish the game off.
Other highlights
We learnt (both opposition coach and myself) that under 2 minutes we can no longer dribbling the game out. Glad we learnt this now rather then later down the season 🙂
U14 Girls Black (Andrew Herbert)
Loss against Lakeside Lightning (42 – 55)
Coaches notes
After a great win last week our team was heavily depleted through injury and illness as we took on a full strength Lakeside team.
With only 6 players available (including one on very limited minutes through illness) we agreed on a disciplined game plan to ensure we competed for 4 quarters. Another slow start saw us trailing by 11 at quarter time and despite the best efforts of the players we found ourselves 20 points in arrears with a quarter to go. In the three quarter time huddle the team committed to the goal of winning the last quarter. Despite having all played out a full game without sub rotations, the girls found another gear and challenged the Lakeside Team winning the final quarter 17-10 and closing to within 9 points at one stage. The discipline, determination and fitness of our group was really impressive to only go down by 13 as it could easily have blown out if they had dropped their heads.
Player of the game
This week the player of the round goes to Izabelle Biggs. Izzy provided another 4 quarter effort at both ends of the floor and gave energy and spark to keep us in the game as our leading scorer. Izzy’s game is getting stronger each week- with her hustle, skills and decision making forming a crucial part of a strong Suns back court. Great work Izzy!
Other highlights
Eunice Espanola took advantage of her extended minutes and provided great leadership through setting screens. Eunice also hit a clutch 3 pointer to give us momentum in the 4th.
All players were really gutsy on the day with Charlotte and Lulu each contributing 12 points.
U14 Girls Orange (Adam Brickwood)
Loss against Perry Lakes Hawks (26 – 60)
Coaches notes
Tough game on the weekend – the girls had their work cut out against a tall team that got off to a flyer. It was a great experience for them to learn how to make adjustments as the game went on and how to compete against team like that.
In the second half we started to be more physical and box out and use our pace in transition plus finding areas in the mid-range where we could get a shot off without being blocked. Hopefully we can do that for four quarters next time we meet.
Player of the game
Neve Spry – Showed what she is capable of by giving us a calm presence with her ball handling and decision making on the offensive end
U14 Girls White(Daniel Heyman)
Won against Lakeside Lightning (54 – 46)
Coaches notes
This week we broke through and got our first win of the season in what was a hard-fought battle, with solid contributions from our whole team. Strong team play was the highlight of the match. The girls showed a level of sustained commitment to playing hard, competing at the required level to win at WABL level.
From the outset the opposing Lakeside team relentlessly attacked the paint with their dribble-drive offense, challenging our interior defense. We stuck to our defensive strategy and relied on early ball pressure and a rotating help defense to mitigate their attack with varying degrees of success. As the game wore on, we protected the keyway better, causing them to repeatedly kick the ball out and take longer shots.
Rebounding and shot selection were our main focus. Our shot selection was outstanding, resulting in a much-improved field goal percentage of 40% (last week we shot 19%). Not settling for outside shots and working the ball around bolstered our shooting efficiency. We also shot a season high 69% from the line. Evidence that our form shooting is improving our scoring ability. On the boards we we competitive against a big and aggressive team but still lost the battle of the boards, allowing the opponents 18 offensive rebounds to our 14 defensive rebounds. Improving our rebounding effort remains our main objective.
This win was much-welcomed after 4 rounds of being competitive but not quite doing enough to get the W. It has instilled a belief in our girls and set the bar for what is needed to win games. The requisite commitment, energy and focus at trainings and during pregame warm-ups that carries into games has been set and needs to be maintained to get the results we want for ourselves.
This was an important win for us. Our girls got the job done and should be proud of their individual and collective efforts.
Player of the game
Jaeda Aliphon. Jaeda was everywhere. She initiated the offense, attacking with her dribble, crossing up defenders with expertise. Once she got past the first line of the defense, she dimed up team mates left by the rotating help defense, tallying a team high 4 assists. She also top scored with 14 points off an efficient 4/4 from the line. Jaeda’s offensive rebounding energy set an example of the standard required for the team. She chased her own misses and gave us second opportunities with her team high 4 offensive boards. Jaeda was a pest on D getting yet another team high of 4 steals. Jaeda was an absolute superstar for us and helped the girls secure our first win of the season.
Other highlights
Gabriella McCullaugh hit a buzzer beating 3 at the end of the first quarter, followed by Anika Heyman hitting another long-range bomb at the end of the half. Standout players include Ashlyn Shields, who showed great improvement with her energy and positioning on defense, also contributing 4 points off the bench. Malia Williams player her first game as a development player, pulling down a team high of 6 rebounds with limited minutes off the bench. She looks to be a high impact player, able to step in at crucial times of need.
U14 Girls Blue (Tamara Reeves)
Loss against Warwick Senators (50 – 55)
Coaches notes
Everyone worked really hard this game with us even winning by nearly 10 points about halfway through the game, and were winning nearly all of it until the last quarter. Warwick struggled to get the ball up the court with the tough defense and hustle the girls displayed. The girls ran the court hard which resulted in a lot of fast break layups. We also executed our plays and scored off of them. I’m really proud of how hard they played and the improvements that are already beginning to show with both skills and game IQ.
Player of the game
Chloe Schumann- Chloe came out firing and scored the first 2 points of the game with a great layup. All game she sprinted her heart out on defense, intercepting and being the first one back. She also finished the game with 7 points.
U14 Boys Black (Shannon Trew)
Won against Willeton Tigers (62 – 50)
Coaches notes
Another week, another tough fought win by the boys. These boys do what is needed to get the win against tough opposition. They have all the skills and determination to keep improving and winning but again some area broke down.
We will keep working on these areas and as a team we will get better. All the ingredients for a great team are there and we look forward to continuing to grow.
When we play great defence we are firing and looking great which flows into our offence.rs and we were lucky to get the win.
Player of the game
Bailey Ryan was again the general in offence (31 points) and defence, finding windows in offence and creating walls in defence. He works hard for his team mates and brings the energy and effort when we are lacking. He is a great leader to his team mates and he lifts everyone up when needed.
U14 Boys Orange (Adrian Mok)
Loss against Cockburn Cougars (60 – 61)
Player of the game
Leyton Rooke – Kept us in the game the whole way and couldn’t ask for anything more. Love you work out there!!
U14 Boys White (Joel Warner)
Won against Perth Redbacks (73 – 68)
Coaches notes
Although we weren’t as clinical as I would like in the half-court, we did enough to recover when we were challenged. Perth had some talented players and were well coached. We needed to make defensive changes non-stop this week because their counters to our pressure were of a very high standard. However, we showed again that when we stay in our systems our game-style holds up. So to repeat that from last week, and post a large score was great. Huge credit goes to a couple of players who didn’t hit the court as much as I would have liked this week. The positivity coming from those guys was excellent. And when they did hit the court, they were impactful and made few errors. We had seven, or maybe eight players pushing for starting roles this week, which is another great sign. A few notable contributors impacting on the win this week were Elisha, with another big scoring contribution (24), Reuben, who returned to a starting spot and found some rhythm, hitting a few jump shots including a 3 when we needed it, and Peter, who again won his match-up, pulled down 15 rebounds, blocked 4 shots and contributed 16 points. With that in mind, we had contributions everywhere and our scoring spread remains quite broad, demonstrating that everyone is touching the ball and playing a role.
Player of the game
This week, the player of the round goes to Phoenix. On Tuesday at practice, we set out to improve on a few very specific areas and the player most focussed and determined was undoubtably Phoenix. He translated that effort over to Sunday and was an enormous spark for our Team. Statistically Phoenix made an impact with two blocks, and 11 points, but he protected the ball well and minimized his turnover count, finishing the game with only one. That is quite remarkable when the ball is in his hands so often. Phoenix makes a big impact on the culture of our Team, nothing much phases him and he plays through pressure with no fear. Further, in a close game, he played almost an entire quarter on four fouls, which shows his maturity. I love his desire to compete and he is a natural player who leads by example. Great work Phoenix.
Other highlights
A key highlight at this stage in the season, is that we have the desire to improve, and that is growing. Further to our ‘reward for effort’ focus at practice, we have introduced a performance review system that enables the boys to see that improvement in certain areas can be tracked. It also shows that when the majority of positions are won by our Team, we are far more likely to win games. The players seem to be enjoying this type of direct feedback and coach James and I are able to make targeted changes week to week. As always, practice is where we improve so we’ll get back to practice on Tuesday and look to get better. The take-away for the Team should be that we’ve got two consecutive wins, heading into the bye week. Well done Suns White.
U14 Boys Blue (Hayden Bird)
Won against Cockburn Cougars (80 – 45)
Coaches notes
The first half for us went really well playing our tempo!
Our offence and scoring mainly came from us pushing the ball in transition and making the right passes. movement off the ball really helped us creating the best shots.
Second half slipped but we manged to keep our lead and find some more creative ways to score the ball.
Our defence really was put on display against Cockburn playing intense forcing bad passes and turnovers.
Player of the game
This weeks Player of the round goes to Sandrae Miguel Maesa, for a tremendous performance against the Cockburn cougars. Sandrae Lead the team in scoring with 16pts! But that did not represent his defensive performance taking on any player that needed a defender on them! Communicating, switching and playing solid defence forcing turnovers and missed shots. Very well deserved, great work Sandrae!
Other highlights
Roentgen pastor: 16pts terrific leader on the floor!
Kurt De Jesus: 15pts stayed very intense and very focused all game!
Tadiwa Rukodzi: 13pts very tough defender and team player!
U16 Girls Black (Charlie Smart)
Loss against East Perth Eagles (48 – 71)
Coaches notes
It was a disappointing game overall unfortunately the team just didn’t gel together this weekend. I must mention and commend the fight from George and Elissa who were both outstanding and kept their heads high throughout.
Player of the game
Jess Prior – Jess came onto the court with a point to prove and dominated the game both ends of the court. She executed everything that was asked of her perfectly. Jess fought hard to secure rebounds and positioned herself well to score some great baskets. Great to see her play with confidence as she has a long career in front of her.
U16 Girls Orange (Shannon Trew)
Won against Hills Raiders (71 – 26)
Coaches notes
ENERGY, EFFORT and ATTITUDE!
The girls set themselves a challenge to start strong and keep Raiders to under 30 points for the game and that they did!
The energy on and off the court was MASSIVE and everyone stuck to the game plan. Defence was electrifying and the pressure never stopped from the beginning to the end of the game.
It’s amazing seeing 10 players all playing for each other and never being selfish, always putting the team first and setting up the best option in offence and helping in defence. The trust they have for each other to be there and be supportive is remarkable.
Player of the game
Harper Ashbolt had a massive game in offence and defence and lead from the front. Always keeping the pressure in defence helped to bring all her team mates into the game and make their games enjoyable and rewarding. Rebounds, steals, walling up, solid passes, smart movement and strong finishing around the ring. She ran for her team mates both ways and her energy was infectious.
Other highlights
10 players in sync with each other, all playing their part to make 1 strong performing TEAM.
It was clearly their best game as a team, as a whole unit.
These girls are building something special, their continued hard work and dedication to improving is just incredible.
Looking forward to seeing more each week.
U16 Boys Black (Brad Dowd)
Loss against Mandurah Magic (78 – 91)
Coaches notes
This was a much better game than last week, we were up by 4 at quarter time and down by only 1 at half time, the game was anyone’s for the taking. However with the help of a very lopsided foul count (most our players in foul trouble) Mandurah slowly pulled away. A couple of strong come back attempts from us was great, but it wasn’t enough. Everyone played much better this game and I look forward to the next and watching this team continually improve.
Player of the game
Leslie Woods receives player of the round, he kept a level head throughout the game and played well in all aspects of his game, topping it off with 29 points
Other highlights
Jarron Atterton continued his strong form with plenty of rebounds, blocks and solid defense.
U16 Boys Orange (Rob Rees)
Won against Eastern Suns (101 – 41)
Coaches notes
Improved our Defense, and gave one of our development players some good court time.
Player of the game
Julien Richardson scored 31 points, Julien was able to capitalise on the teams good defense.
Other highlights
Obviously, when the team has a high score there, other players will also have high individual scores, but the high score is a result of good defense, not a result of good offense by any one individual.
U16 Boys White (Jordon Macpherson)
Won against Perth Redbacks (115 – 68)
Coaches notes
Another very good win yesterday!
I love the fact our boys are gelling so well.
This win is dedicated to Ryan Eva for the sustained effort he has shown to the club playing for the Eastern Suns for 50 games! What a great accomplishment.
This week we had Daniel and AJ out, plus Jaxon rolled his ankle badly early in the game. Everyone else stepped up and supported the group. This was wonderful to see.
Shout outs to Riley and Milan playing significant minutes and never letting the energy drop. Milan’s steals on the run out of our full court press in the last quarter were impressive after playing so many minutes (that Kit Kat at half time paid off😉). Also top scoring with a cool 40pts to boot.
Riley can not be stopped once he gets momentum, dropping some acrobatic layups. Riley was our second top scorer with 25pts.
Keelan continues to grow and build confidence on the court.
Roman did well with more minutes this week and is fitting in well to our team after having a number of weeks out with a serious injury.👍
Ryan performed well showing his grit with a number of steals and aggressive nature in offence.
Player of the game
This weeks “player of the week” goes to Caedan Lodewyke. After an impressive tryout/grading Caedan suffered a knee injury and has been working diligently to get back to form. Caedan has responded well to adversity and showed he is starting to find that form in yesterdays game. Caedan wouldn’t give up in defence and made his mark on the game when he intercepted a pass after sprinting the floor from the other end in transition defence. Great game Caedan, keep up the hard work.
U16 Boys Blue (Luke Poyner)
Loss against Eastern Suns (41 – 101)
Coaches notes
Despite a disappointing result the boys had some great moments of basketball. Our second quarter was on point with a promising display of teamwork. It was good to see moments where the boys put all their hard work at training into practice. Unfortunately we let ourselves down with our shooting and transition play for the other 3 quarters of the game.
Player of the game
Ethan Allen put in some great hustle today, showing a positive attitude and putting in his best effort the entire game.
U18 Girls Black (Travis Linaker)
Loss against Joondalup Wolves (31 – 72)
Coaches notes
Whilst the score line does not look great it really does not represent the full picture of this game.
This was one of the best defensive and offensive games we have played and the only issue was that we just could not make a finish. We had good shot selection after good shot selection, setup often by solid unselfish play but they just would not drop. Regardless of this the girls really stayed with the process for most of the game and did not give up, it was promising to see them play hard till the final siren.
This was a game against the top of the table, MUCH bigger team and after the game the Wolves coach approached me to tell me that he was glad that our shots had not gone in as we had out played them and were the better team on the day.
I hope that the level of effort in this game is the new normal and we can build from here as we are so very, very close to showing how good we can be.
Player of the game
This is always a tough call but I think that Grace O’Meara Smith really embraced the process this week and gave her best whilst setting a new benchmark for boxing out.
U18 Girls Orange (Ric Batista)
Loss against Joondalup Wolves (27 – 75)
Coaches notes
The girls again remained positive through a difficult game and a very pleasing aspect is that we never give up. These are a resilient bunch of girls and I’m proud of them. Our bigger bodies coped better with some huge physical girls on Joondalups roster. I’m really proud of the started cheering on the bench who earned more time this game.
Player of the game
Bonita Batista – first points and 3 of her wabl career this week, toiled hard on the boards and made joondalup earn every point in the paint
Other highlights
Ella Curry lead the team well with scoring and her never say die attitude, despite being consistently being knocked pillar to post. A very even contribution from there would mention everyone if we had time.
U18 Boys Black (Lachie Riley / Angus Hywood)
Loss against Joondalup Wolves (84 – 98)
Coaches notes
Coming against a well trained Joondalup team we competed well in most aspects of the game. Our execution of plays had improved this game.
We where chasing the whole game after a slow first quarter and managed to get within 6 points mid way through the 4th which was an exciting achievement.
Player of the game
Saxon Counsel. Pre game I asked the boys to attack the middle player in wolves 1-3-1 zone, Saxon was able to do that, then misdirect the player and score on multiple occasions. He’s a menace in defence pulling an early charge, shooting the three ball well and even managing a half court buzzer beater in the second.
Other highlights
Blake Thomas found his confidence and knocked down multiple tough shots, he also controlled the offence and used his teammates well.
Our new recruit Brandyn Ross played his first game for the team this season and tore it up. Splashing threes, executing plays and scoring tough shots down low. His efforts on the boards had a positive effect.
U18 Boys Orange (Brad Coutts)
Loss against Perth Redbacks (70 – 72)
Coaches notes
Getting ourselves in front in the last quarter after being down by 12 points during the first half.
Player of the game
Dylan Whyte – Dylan continues to be a solid contributor since the first game of the year and could have been the nomination a couple of times prior. For his first year playing WABL is having a great impact on both ends of the court.
Other highlights
Offense continues to be very sound through most of the game and just need to be better at switching up defense through the game and understand where we need to position ourselves.
U18 Boys White (Rae D’Sylva)
Won against Lakeside Lightning (94 – 82)
Coaches notes
Ball movement to find open shooters. Defence was good with the boys reacting and reading the changes quickly
Player of the game
Jake dickson. Jake played great defence and took the right shots and passed when drew defenders to open players
Other highlights
Everyone played their part in the win . Heath rose is going from strength to strength each week.
U18 Boys Blue (Tyron Neill)
Loss against Mandurah Magic (67 – 85)
Coaches notes
Never showed quit all game and played hard right to the end to win the final quarter by 7 points which is something we hadn’t done this season. To be able to identify the gaps straight after the loss and know the necessary changes to bridge the margin for next time is good dilemma and even better when you have a team that can show up and do something special on any given day.
Player of the game
Aidan Thompson – Played good solid basketball all game, didn’t buy into opposition banter and put all his energy on the court to come away with 19pts with a heap of offensive and defensive rebounds. The way he enforces himself on the game always has huge impact on team.
U20 Boys Black (Lochy Brown)
Won against Southwest Slammers (109 – 107)
Coaches notes
It was a great offensive outing from the boys. Everyone hit the scoreboard and and made an impact when they attacked. Defence needs work but it would be a boring season if we were perfect.
Player of the game
Ryan Coutts – As a group we have been working on identifying what works and going back to it during the game. We did that with Ryan. No one could stop him around the ring and he kept putting himself in great positions to score.
U20 Boys Orange (Cooper Lowe)
Won against Mandurah Magic (93 – 60)
Coaches notes
It was really good to see our team rebounding improve over the last couple of weeks, resulting in being able to get out in transition and put scoreboard pressure on the other team.
Player of the game
Josh Macneall wins this weeks player of the week, notching up 26 points and improving on the defensive end each week, he’s a pleasure to coach and keen to see his continual growth over the course of the season
