WABL Wrap Week 4 – 14/05/23

Round 4

All of our “Player of the Game” superstars will receive a FREE PIZZA from our friends at Domino’s Kalamunda – Thanks Guys!

Players of the round:

Eloise Clince (U14 Girls) – Our player of the match is Eloise Clince! Top scoring for the Eastern Suns and outclassing her opposition in defence. Good athleticism and a precision 3 pointer was a great highlight.

Elisha Dixon (U14 Boys) – This week, the player of the round goes to Elisha, who led our Team in the third quarter with great transition offence and defence. Elisha took a big forward step this week and was pivotal in our defensive structures. Two months ago, some of our defensive concepts were foreign, not just to Elisha, but the whole group. We are close to a point where we can structure quickly and recover to correct spots naturally, rather than getting confused and ending up on the wrong side of our opposition players, resulting in scores. This week, Eisha found himself in all the right spots naturally, because he is really learning the game. Coach James and I can tell that Elisha is one of the boys who is really putting in work in his own time and it paid off on Sunday. Although Elisha found himself on the end of a lot of transition points (22 points in total), that was just the result of correct defensive structures, good in-game reads, and solid Team defence. I am more impressed with how he is dedicating himself to learning basketball concepts, than his 22 points. 22 points is impressive, but how he got them is a more important achievement. It is enjoyable to see Elisha use his natural talent in a way that fits structured basketball. He is a pleasure to coach and an important cog in the Suns White rotation. Well done Elisha!

U12 Girls Black (Lawrence West)

Loss against Perry Lakes Hawks (41 – 53)

Coaches notes

This was an exciting game where every point was hard earned. The first two quarters saw us trading baskets back and forth with no team giving an inch, we ended the half down by 5.
In the third the Hawks caught fire and seemingly couldn’t miss! While our defense was solid, we couldn’t convert our opportunities on offense and this saw the lead push out to 14 points. While we rallied again to stay with them the damage was done and we just couldn’t close the gap.

That being said we played a good game and took the right shots. I’m confident on a day when our shots are falling the result would have been different, but full credit to Perry Lakes on some fantastic shooting!

As a group we look more comfortable on the court together and our decision making is getting better every week. We will continue to work on our foul discipline, however our attention to rebounding is paying off and we are coming up with more and more opportunities.

Player of the game

Taneika Lewis led from the front this week, scoring a team high 17 points (41% FG), 8 rebounds, 8 assists & 4 steals! T’s ability to take over a game is incredible, when she decides its go time the whole momentum of the game shifts and all kinds of good things happen. Well done superstar on a fantastic performance!

Other highlights

A MASSIVE shoutout to our amazing mums this week who gave up their mothers day sleep in to be at Bendat for 7:30am. Your dedication is truly appreicated and I hope you managed an afternoon nap!

U12 Girls Orange (Lizzie Falconbridge)

Loss against Warwick Senators (24 – 30)

Coaches notes

Coached this week by Ryan Breadsell.

Our first game on the road in the last time slot at Warwick. Our team started a bit flat. The girls shared the ball around and put points on the board with Eloise scoring some great baskets and Rejoice hitting her layups, Everyone continued to push up and put pressure on the ball but quickly got into foul trouble. By the second quarter we had to adapt and use our bench to try and continue to apply pressure and run out plays. All players continued to try and penetrate the opposition but struggled to get through the defence. Our scoring slowed down and we lost the lead by the start of the fourth quarter. With 4 out of 5 of our starting lineup fouled out we couldn’t make up the difference. But to our credit they never gave up and got a couple of late baskets to go down by 6.

Player of the game

Zoe Keene – it was good to see one of our new players step up to the challenge. With everyone getting into foul trouble Zoe was asked to go on and be a presence under the basket. She got some amazing rebounds and scored some great baskets. Zoe also helped bring the ball down and penetrate the defenders when they applied a full court press.

Other highlights

Great to see Mariska, Oceana and Amina making progress on their defence and implementing advice given by Lizzie at training. Also a big shout out to our spectators and all the Mums that came to support the girls on Mothers-day, it was good to hear the shouts of encouragement and positive support for our girls.

U12 Girls White (Bruno Kongawoin)

Loss against Perth Redbacks (34 – 41)

Coaches notes

The improvements of each player every week remain the highlights of each game we played so far. Everyone is coming into their own in their own way and rate and this could be seen that everyone who played had an input into our final result of the week.

We have some very important takeaways to help us work on our teammate to consolidate our effort moving forward.

Player of the game

Sienna Raddock. Sienna is an underrated leader in the way she plays and conducts herself on and off the court. I’m very proud to see her developing every week into a team player and instrumental in our success to date and in the future..

Other highlights

Ball movement in offense was very instrumental in allowing each player that hit the floor to score at least 1 point which is awesome to see.

U12 Boys Black (Lizzie Falconbridge)

Won against South West Slammers (69 – 29)

Coaches notes

An away game for us down in Bunbury this week and despite the long drive down, the team were mentally ready and went out strong and hard from the moment they stepped on court. The teamwork and defence were brilliant, with lots of shadow defence also notable. There wasn’t one player who didn’t step up, they were out there to win to game. Offensively, there were lots of impressive left-handed shots and each of the players are really starting to identify where their “sweet spot” is for sinking shots.

Thank you to our wonderful parents for supporting the team, helping the boys to prepare and taking the trek to Bunbury.

Player of the game

Hayden Taylor- Hayden was on fire today, he exploded from the moment he stepped on court. He worked really hard to pick off the passes, played brilliant defence and read the play fabulously.

Other highlights

Coaches award went to Lewis Aliphon this week. Quick on the defence with brilliant energy and persistent ball chasing.
Worthy mention also goes to Zac Cranswick. Zac dropped multiple shots with a fabulous drive and step around.

U12 Boys Orange (Tim Hart)

Loss against Perth Redbacks (45 – 52)

Coaches notes

Redbacks pressed in the back-court and the extra defensive pressure resulted in more offensive mistakes (picked off passes, and travelling). Despite the big gap in steals (20 vs 42 for Redbacks) resulting in fewer shots at basket (55 for us 82 for Redbacks), the team was able to claw back to an even game in the second half, but it fell away in Q4. The team had a higher shooting percentage this week compared with prior rounds (38% vs 30% for the opposition). Our rebounding matched the opposition team this week, but there is still room for improvement as we had the height advantage this week. We also saw a season-high count for defensive jump balls this week (4).

Player of the game

Hunter wins player of the week. Hunter helped us with speed up the court in offence, he competed for rebounds (total 6 – double last game), showed focus in his defence, picked up 13 points @ 40% shooting, and fought for a defensive jump ball. Hunter missed the first two games of the season, it is great to have him back on board and making an impact so quickly.

Other highlights

Cohen had another stand-out game this week, with a big 13 rebounds, 3 assists, 9 steals, 4 deflections and 8 points (shooting 60% from the field and 50% from the foul-line). The energy Cohen puts into the game keeps the opposition on their toes on both ends of the court. Several players are showing increased patience in offence with an awareness of spacing in the keyway, and trying to pass into the cutter. There were some pleasing plays where a cutter received a pass at just the right time to finish with a quick bucket.

U12 Boys White (Patrick Massam)

Loss against Perry Lakes Hawks (23 – 57)

Coaches notes

Fantastic defence from the boys this week, matching up well against a physical Hawks team. It’s awesome to see them more confident in defending the ball and applying pressure down the whole court.

They were given a press brake mid game to execute, and on the most part were able to pull off. It shows how far the boys understanding of the game and how they play has grown in a short few months, great work!

Player of the game

Drew Bydder – It was great to see how hard you played this week! Being one of the youngest and smaller players in the team you lead the way with intensity, contesting for the ball against two or three hawks players at a time. Great work!

U14 Boys Blue (Dave Yan)

Won against Mandurah Magic (40 – 39)

U14 Girls Black (Andrew Herbert)

Won against Joondalup Wolves (47 – 42)

Coaches notes

This week the girls encountered the undefeated Wolves team and entered the game undermanned with only 6 players available in the first quarter. The players were switched on from the opening tip but could not capitalise on their hard work and went into the first break down 12-1. Through good discipline, perseverance and belief the scoreboard rewards came and we won quarters 2, 3 and 4 to secure the victory. Brilliant effort by all.

Player of the game

Jade Roulston was brilliant defensively using her size and strength to block shots, wall up and rebound for crucial stops. Jade was also prepared to put her body on the line to dive on lose balls. Jade was also composed in overcoming ball pressure to outlet the ball and turn defense into offence for her teammates. Fantastic game Jade!

Other highlights

Awesome contributions from everyone, particularly Izzy Biggs, Carmen Woods and Charlotte Herbert. Eunice also made a clutch basket when it was all on the line in the final minutes.

U14 Girls Orange (Adam Brickwood)

Won against Eastern Suns (34 – 31)

Coaches notes

An exciting game to watch with many highlights especially the finish! Suns white was able to hit a clutch 3 to tie the game with only seconds remaining and then capped off with another clutch 3 pointer from Matilda to win the game.
Through out the game the ball movement was great to see both trying to navigate through the press applied and when we were in our half court offence.

Player of the game

Benwech Kuach – showed great leadership with her effort and energy every minute on the court and was strong in the contest when the ball needed to be won.

U14 Girls White(Daniel Heyman)

Loss against Eastern Suns (31 – 34)

Coaches notes

In a heartbreaking loss, a last second 3 point shot by our own rival Suns team sealed our fate! What a way to go down. It was yet another tight game, going into the fourth quarter down on the scoreboard. Our girls rallied back with our stifling defence and a cohesive team effort that showed passion and commitment by the whole roster. Alas, it wasn’t enough.

From the outset, we stepped up our efforts on the boards to limit our opponent’s second chance points, keeping us in touch throughout the game. Unfortunately, it was a story of turnovers leading to transition buckets that let them get the early ascendance. Surges by both Suns teams saw the margin balloon then tighten. To their credit, the opposing Suns hit some devastating deep shots, some deep and contested beyond the arc. But our girls refused to turn over. We pushed hard in the forth playing our best basketball of the game. With just 3 seconds remaining, Anika Heyman hit a 3 to tie the game! A time out was called. All we had to do was contest their final shot without fouling to force the game to overtime. The opponents advanced the ball and inbounded with 3 seconds remaining. They shoot…. and hit the game winning 3, leaving just 0.5 seconds for us to equalise. We were unable to make up the difference, failing to hit a clutch buzzer beater.

A philosophical post-game debrief helped us reflect on the the cruelty of the game whilst yet appreciating the positives we get from such a shared experience. We are proud of how the girls played out the game. One thing is for sure, it sets up an epic 23rd of July rematch and rivalry that will surely be another battle to go down to the wire.

Player of the game

Ella Michalczuk. Ella was everywhere on defence! She was blocking shots, intercepting passes and repeatedly rebounding to give our team extra chances to score. Ella was a force of nature, causing problems for the other Suns team. Since joining the team late, Ella has shown a commitment to improve her game by practicing her shooting form and by seeking advice whenever she can. Today she showed growth in her awareness of her team defensive help responsibilities. Ella has proven to be a vital cog in the machine and looks to be a key player to the future success of our team. Amazing game Ella!

Other highlights

Jaeda Aliphon was our top scorer today with 10 points. Her shot selection was outstanding. She craftily picked her moments to attack the hoop or defer with the pass. Playing the weakside, Jaeda ducked in with expert timing to receive the ball in positions of advantage. She also showed great energy, getting out on the break ahead of the defence. As Jaeda finds her confidence and niche within our team structure, she’ll increasingly become featured in our weekly highlights.

U14 Girls Blue (Tamara Reeves)

Loss against East Perth Eagles (20 – 51)

Coaches notes

Coached by Michael Danzo and Lawrence West.
It was a tough match against taller and stronger opponents. We used our speed advantage to strike an early lead but this was a big ask to maintain till the last quarter.
In the final minutes the girls had given it all on the court and struggled to keep it together against such a formidable opposing team. Resulting in a runaway loss towards the last minutes.
Some great lessons have been learned and improved upon in defence and in protecting the ball for the future. Our plays resulted in buckets on 2 occasions so let’s keep improving on Tamara’s great work!

Player of the game

Eloise Clince- Our player of the match is Eloise Clince! Top scoring for the Eastern Suns and outclassing her opposition in defence. Good athleticism and a precision 3 pointer was a great highlight.

U14 Boys Black (Shannon Trew)

Won against Warwick Senators (60 – 59)

Coaches notes

The Boys got out to a great start and were up 22-14 qtr time. 2nd qtr we struggles to score or stop them defensively and we ended leading at half time by 1 point.
The 2nd half ended a draw and we won by 1 point. Not training this week looks like it flowed into our game as we didnt have enough energy or effort by all players and we were lucky to get the win.

Player of the game

Bailey Ryan – 2 way player again by Bailey this week, his leadership showed throughout the game and he kept us going through the highs and lows of the game. 17 points, lots of rebounds and defensive stops.

Other highlights

Raymond finished with 20 points.
Tanzeke tried hard with 9 points.

U14 Boys Orange (Adrian Mok)

Loss against Willetton Tigers (38 – 52)

Coaches notes

Another week with a full roster and the chemistry is coming along well. Great stages of defensive pressure in this game but need to be able to sustain it for a whole game and our offensive is improving but we still need to get into our sets quicker.

Player of the game

Archie King – Has displayed a great attitude since joining the team and starting to understand the expectation at the WABL level. Keep up the hard work and I look forward to seeing his improvement over the season.

U14 Boys White (Joel Warner)

Won against Southwest Slammers (75 – 65)

Coaches notes

Again, coach James and I are rewarding effort and consistency at practice so some of our starters will naturally change, quite likely every week. When we have good depth in the Team, it allows for instant impact when players come off the bench. We build that depth at practice and on Tuesday last week, we practiced better than we have all season. Our initial substitutions gave us the impact we needed to keep early pressure on our opposition. In the match-up against South West, we had some targets to achieve, those targets became focus points at practice. Statistically we needed to make up 12 points and reduce the scoring of three of their key players by at least 6 points. We met those goals and put up our largest score of the year. To achieve our in-game goals should give the players the confidence that what we are practicing is paying off. There were multiple possessions where scoring came easily because we played within our systems effectively and more consistently. I was particularly impressed with Reuben, Ethan, Sam and Kade, who spaced the court well, allowing for other teammates to score easily. Those things don’t show up on a stats sheet, but they are crucial to effective Team basketball.

Player of the game

This week, the player of the round goes to Elisha, who led our Team in the third quarter with great transition offence and defence.

Other highlights

A highlight against South West, was that we played together for longer periods. We won three quarters, which was the first time we’ve managed that all season. We had a good scoring spread again this week, but the result came because we played unified for longer periods of time. Our guards (Chad, Reuben, Kade, Sam) protected the ball well and our wings (Elisha, Asten, Ethan, Phoenix) ran effectively in transition. Our big players (Peter, Tala) battled really hard all game and made the opposition work for the majority of their points across the first three quarters. This was the first game we have used all our defensive structures effectively, with less break downs. I like that we can play disruptive, aggressive structures, but we can also play tempo, trapping defence too. Choosing when to run, when offensive transition opportunities present, and when to execute tempo basketball and exploit mismatches is a huge learning curve for juniors, so we will continue to work on those concepts. Overall, Coach James and I were happy for the Team. They got what they deserved with that win, and the Mum’s got another small gift for Mother’s Day. Well done Suns White.

U14 Boys Blue (Hayden Bird)

Won against Perry Lakes Hawks (59 – 27)

Coaches notes

Even though we had a slow start in the 1st quarter we went through the game with high intensity and a massive amount of energy!
The games tempo was controlled by us and we really had played our game!
Defense was the main emphasis during the game and the boys followed through. Every defensive play create an even better offensive play on the other end!
Offensively fast breaks and movement off the ball really helped us carry the lead further and over the line!

Player of the game

Roentgen (ronron) Pastor 14pts: ronron hasn’t gone unnoticed so far to start this season! For a small guard he is extremely shifty which came out today during the game, splitting through defenders to get a shot for him self or create a better option for his teammates! Ronron was very clever in his decision making and being a true leader on the floor! Even though ronron is one of the smaller players on the court there is no defensive challenge he won’t take on! Wether it was trying his hardest contesting lay-ups or keeping up with the guards, ronron put in the effort to keep up and make it happen! Very much earned and deserved great work Ronron!!

Other highlights

Tadiwa: 23pts being a solid 3 all game and being in evry spot possible to make it happen for the team today!
Seth londsdale: 9pts really filled into the big role getting stops and blocks! Leading to tough rebounds.
Boh Seth and Tadiwa really put there body’s on the line hustling and diving for the ball!

U16 Girls Black (Charlie Smart)

Loss against Cockburn Cougars (49 – 57)

U16 Girls Orange (Shannon Trew)

Won against East Perth Eagles (62 – 52)

Coaches notes

After a slow start and a few early mistakes the girls regrouped and picked up the pressure in defence which turned into transition points and girls worked hard to keep East Perth out of the paint. Third caused lots of forced errors and the girls jumped on every loose ball.

Having 3 players out sick shortened our bench and they never complained and never gave up. Energy, Effort and a positive attitude got us the win!

Player of the game

Chelsea Seccull was outstanding in defence and East Perth kept hitting Chelsea’s brick wall defence. Chelsea was instrumental in our fast transition with amazing outlet passes to girls sprinting down the court. Chelsea was getting hit left, right and centre and never stopped fighting. Her team mates responded from her fighting for the ball and joined in on the action. She was a great leader on the court.

Other highlights

Heidi Lucassen had her best 2-way game for the Suns with her defensive pressure and fast running and hassle in offence. She finished with 12 points plus 5-6 assists to players in a better position.
Harper, Charlie, Shelby and Annie combined for 53 points between them with all points going to the player in the better position.
Great TEAM FIRST basketball !

U16 Boys Black (Brad Dowd)

Loss against Southwest Slammers (56 – 73)

Coaches notes

Not many positives unfortunately, so hopefully this was our worse game for the season and it’s now out of the way. We have a lot to work on at training and hopefully fix these issues and refocus on our next game.

Player of the game

Zakk Venetis takes out Player of the Round, for really stepping up on defence causing multiple turnovers and getting 4 steals. He also kept a level head when other players didn’t.

Other highlights

Big Tom Bartle really stepped up in this game also, I asked for more from him in the paint and he delivered. Well done Tom.

U16 Boys Orange (Rob Rees)

Won against Southwest Slammers (77 – 45)

Coaches notes

The whole team contributed to the win, both defensively first and then offensively

Player of the game

Tobie Freeth, Tobie had a Greta game both offensively and more importantly defensively

Other highlights

All players contributed to a very solid win.

U16 Boys White (Jordon Macpherson)

Won against Willeton Tigers (70 – 58)

Coaches notes

Another great game by the boys this week.
A win we dedicate to all our mothers.
Our full court defence is proving to be a challenge for our opponents as our team plays with an intensity yet to be matched.
Great defence creates great offence and this is true for team White.
Each week we are making improvements in certain areas of our game and this is credit to the work the boys put in at training and in their own time.

Player of the game

Jaxon Macpherson This weeks player of the week goes to Jaxon Macpherson. Jaxon is a quiet achiever and being the coaches son, often cops the toughest criticism. Jaxon was instrumental in our full court defence, getting a number of steals and causing turnovers in the oppositions back court. In offence Jaxon top scored with 21 points, controlling the ball well. The majority Jaxon’s points came from getting down hill and finishing under contact. Way to initiate the contact Jax, it certainly paid off. Well done Jax!

Other highlights

There are many players who are deserving of this award this week. Some of my shout outs go to Daniel Sexton who again puts up consistent stats shooting 54%FG accuracy and 7 defensive rebounds. Daniel is also a work horse in defence for us. Milan with a combined 12 rebounds from both ends of the floor and Riley gaining a starting position this week played with control, shooting 50%FG and grabbing 8 rebounds. Lionel again showing his maturity and unselfishness with 7 assists and some outstanding defence.

Well done lads!!!

U16 Boys Blue (Luke Poyner)

Loss against Warwick Senators (57 – 90)

Coaches notes

The boys continue to build their game with some great runs and plays. The boys worked hard to improve and had a much stronger finish in the second half of the game. Individual efforts continue to improve with some great work inside by our bigs today.

Player of the game

Alex D’Ascenzo – Played a solid game with some strong rebounding on both ends today. Alex showed some good hustle with his efforts on both ends of the court, with some great defense and netting equal team-high 12 points for the game.

Other highlights

Jensen Poyner switched on in the second half with some strong inside work pulling down some great rebounds, committing to inside defense and dropping 12 points for the game.

U18 Girls Black (Travis Linaker)

Loss against Perry Lakes Hawks (53 – 103)

Coaches notes

This was not a great game for us, we struggled to execute our offensive structures and have not yet worked out the defensive rotations.
We are also struggling to have our shots fall but we all need to focus on creating good open opportunities and the scores will come.
As for the defense, it is all about effort and we have to want to stop the opposition scoring even more than we want to score.
Finally we have to play together.

Player of the game

A tough choice this week, with such a big loss, but all the girls showed solid improvement on an individual level – Lily Leeder, Fearne Van Beek, Dahney Chamberlain and Imogen Sell worked really hard to fulfill their roles, Grace O’Meara Smith & Kiahna Pomponio continue to try and provide leadership, Skye Thomas had a great shooting effort with 17pts (16 from downtown) and lifted her rebounding effort significantly. Keira Thorup & Mahalia Rukuata brought increased intensity at both ends of the court impacting where they could. but for me this week Jasmine Williams did all she could to follow our systems and the actions that work and therefore takes the Player of the Round for week 4.

U18 Girls Orange (Ric Batista)

Loss against Perth Redbacks (45 – 51)

Coaches notes

This one hurt… we were the better team for 3/4 of the game and if we had of not given them an 11-1 head start we likely win this one. I’m taking the blame as coach because in the second quarter we changed to our man on man offence sets and started to dominate. Hannah and Amber were marvellous again as the our two main bigs fighting all day on the boards. Hannah had a huge 7 blocks.

Player of the game

Caitlin Retel takes the player of the game again this week with 24 points and 13 rebounds from your shooting guard and just gut effort running up and back all game

Other highlights

We’re buoyed that as a team we continue to support one another and we keep improving week in and week out. Every girl this week showed glimpses of improvement and I could be any happier as a coach.

U18 Boys Black (Lachie Riley / Angus Hywood)

Loss against Perry Lakes Hawks (63 – 114)

Coaches notes

Although it’s early in the season this team has already had plenty ups and downs. But they’re are strong and the players are determined. We don’t give up no matter the score, we don’t show fear no matter the ability of the opposition. We will looe a couple of battles, but these boys have the fight in them to win the war.

Player of the game

Riley Pabst continues to showcase a high standard of basketball. He works hard for his team and his team works hard for him.

Other highlights

Jarrad Miller fought hard this game chasing rebounds, steals and several massive blocks.

U18 Boys Orange (Brad Coutts)

Loss against Willeton Tigers (58 – 80)

Coaches notes

Once again being in a great position at 3 quarter time only 3 points down against a quality opposition, showing that our structure can match it with any team in the comp.

Player of the game

Xander Ugle – His defensive ability to contain his man and keep the side in the contest creating the opposition to make turnovers and poor decisions.

Other highlights

Sam Ryan – another great game on both ends of the court driving the lanes and getting to the ring on multiple occasions and hitting his free throws at a good percentage

U18 Boys White (Rae D’Sylva)

Loss against Willeton Tigers (101 – 102)

Coaches notes

This week our offence was firing with a few boys playing their role .

Player of the game

Heath rose . He was incredible on offence and defence . Heath top scored for us this week with 33 points while facilitating for his teammates as well.

Other highlights

Other players like Mike corsini and Jake dickson also had a good game on both ends of the court.

U18 Boys Blue (Tyron Neill)

Won against Lakeside Lightning (80 – 69)

Coaches notes

Played a lot better team basketball this week compared to last which was a good lesson learnt that strong defensive pressure has a strong impact to the end result of the game.

Player of the game

Lachlan Moy – Lachy has been working hard to transform his game to not only be a centre, but putting his name out there to be a dominant one in the division by adding new aspects to his game. River Neill – He read the opposition beautifully which led to some important steals at a time the game was there for the taking. Definitely not afraid to get his hands dirty defensively, under the board pulling down a few big rebounds and contributing a handy 10 points to the team.

U20 Boys Black (Lochy Brown)

Won against Mandurah Magic (87 – 84)

Coaches notes

The team bounced back from a disappointing effort last week and showed the potential they have as a group. We found that pride in defence again which would come in handy for a very tight finish to the game.

Player of the game

Hudson Lowe – For controlling the game with and without the ball on offence. And for leading the team with communication on our defence.

U20 Boys Orange (Cooper Lowe)

Won against Joondalup Wolves (74 – 69)
