Coaches notes

A nice win away for the girls! This was a big growth compared to how we played last week. Although we won last week, the team gelled so much better this week. There was no I in basketball. With more consistent scoring this week, we saw the confidence grow of some of the inexperienced players and us coaches couldn’t be prouder.
A quick shout out to Ayla and Chloe. S. Ayla for some great assists, your improvement on when to pass and when to shoot is so amazing to see girls! Chloe you continue to make fantastic decisions. We couldn’t be prouder of all 10 Girls, we need to have the same confidence through out the whole season and they won’t be able to stop us

Loss against East Perth Eagles (8 – 67)

Coaches notes

I was extremelly impressed with the girls this week, their first quarter is a season highlight. There defensive structure and effort was near perfect. Scores were even for the best part or the quarter (although not a focus), but the near double sized Eagle’s outfit eventually out muscled us. This week really displayed how far we have come and that we are on the right path. Well done girls!

Player of the game

Player of the round this week goes to Zoey Gloyn. Zoey is our teams “big” and as such has to shoulder very difficult roles week in week out. She takes a battering at times, but pushes through the games with grit and determination. Her voice and leadership on the court is inspirational. Well done Zoey!

Loss against Perry Lakes Hawks (7 – 77)

Coaches notes

Round 4 against Perry Lakes showed us where we need to improve.
Our dribbling, crossovers, retreats, and free throws were strong, especially for a smaller team. However, we need to lift our defensive pressure and work harder to shut teams down.
We also need to stay focused and keep pushing right until the end of the game. Plenty to build on as we keep improving each week

Player of the game

Queen of the Court this week goes to Kayla!
Kayla’s basketball skills were outstanding this week. Her dribbling and ball control were a real standout throughout the game, and her effort and determination made a big impact for the team. Congratulations to Kayla on being named Player of the Game — a well-deserved achievement!

Loss against Willetton Tigers (35 – 91)

Coaches notes

Unfortunately, it was a really tough game, and for large parts of the match things just didn’t go the way we would’ve liked. We struggled to build momentum at times, and it felt like a lot of things were going against us throughout the game. Despite that, one of the biggest positives to take away was the way the boys continued to fight and compete right until the final siren.
Even when momentum wasn’t in our favour, the effort, resilience, and attitude from the group never dropped. The boys kept battling for each other, stayed together as a team, and refused to give up regardless of the scoreboard or circumstances. That determination and willingness to keep competing under pressure is something we can be really proud of and is a positive we can continue to build on moving forward.

Player of the game

For this week’s Player of the Game, I have selected Jeremiah James. Jeremiah’s ability to come off the bench and instantly provide energy and intensity for the team was outstanding. He was a real spark plug for us all game, constantly lifting the group with his effort and attitude. Defensively, he was willing to guard anyone in front of him and worked tirelessly every possession, whether it was chasing players down in transition, sprinting the floor, or applying pressure on the ball. Even though the result didn’t go our way, Jeremiah’s energy and competitiveness were a real highlight.

Loss against Rockingham Flames (43 – 65)

Coaches notes

Despite the score, the boys had a really great game this week.
Going into the game I think the team were a bit nervous, but at no point did they think to give up or stop trying, they pushed though the whole game and kept fighting until the end. Jonathan and Darcy worked really well together on their defence under the basket, it’s great to see them working so well together.
Kevin got some really great steal and helped the team score from those with some smart assists. Over all the boys played a very well put together game of basketball and the score does not really reflect what a great game they played.

Player of the game

Player of the round goes to Jax. Jax showed up this week with an amazing amount of energy and solid court presence. His defence was on point from start to finish of the game, he chased the ball down every single time and got so many steals from it. His fire on court was inspiring and I think it really kept the spirit of the whole team high.

Won against Perth Redbacks (61 – 35)

Coaches notes

The boys continue to impress me every single week! Their sportsmanship, teamwork, and determination keep improving with each game. This week brought a few challenges on the court, especially during the third quarter when things didn’t quite go as expected, but the way the boys regrouped and came back strong was fantastic to see. They worked through it together and showed great resilience — just another valuable learning and growth moment in basketball.

Keep up the amazing work, boys! Keep supporting each other, playing as a team, and enjoying the journey. Together, you’ll continue smashing goals both on and off the court!

Player of the game

This week’s Player of the Week goes to Harry! Week after week, Harry continues to show up and put in the effort, and his game is going from strength to strength. His gameplay is consistently solid, and he is such a valuable team player every time he steps onto the court.

I don’t think Harry even realises just how good he is, how much he has grown as a player, and the incredible potential he has if he continues on the path he’s on. His sportsmanship, positive attitude, and willingness to listen, learn, and improve are all clearly reflected in his growth and performance each week. Keep up the fantastic work, Harry — your hard work is paying off, and we’re all proud to see your progress

Coaches notes

The team delivered a good defensive performance, applying pressure and doing a great job of keeping the opposition’s scoring opportunities low. Their effort to get up on the ball is improving each game, showing greater intent and growing confidence in the defensive approach. Offensively the effort and willingness to compete were clearly evident, with players attempting to create opportunities. With continued focus on composure and settling into their possessions the team will further develop and strengthen their offensive plays.

Player of the game

David Kongawoin showed a strong rebounding presence and securing key possessions. His defense in the three and four man positions was effective in disrupting the opposition’s rhythm. David showed determination throughout the game.

Won against East Perth Eagles (53 – 32)

Coaches notes

Really proud of the girl’s response this week after a difficult start to the season. This same team beat us by 4 points in grading, so to put together this sort of performance was really pleasing and reassuring in terms of our growth. We’ve been heavily focused on reducing turnovers, attacking the paint with purpose and trusting the extra pass, and I thought the girls made huge strides in those areas. Defensively our pressure and activity level was excellent, forcing 43 turnovers and creating a lot of transition opportunities.

Harper Dostal (16pts, 8reb, 7stls) set the tone defensively at the point of attack while the whole group bought into our “run, compete and take it personal” mindset. Offensively I loved seeing the girls consistently get 2 feet in the paint and make kick out passes instead of settling. Sophie Perazzo (14pts, 2/3 3PT, 7reb, 5stls) benefitted from this with excellent spacing and perimeter finishing, while Eunice Bakulikura (14pts, 15reb, 4blk, 7stls) controlled the interior all game with her rebounding, rim protection and composure.

Player of the game

I gave the nod to Eloise this week. Eloise scored 27 points in domestic during the week and brought a lot of that confidence and composure into our WABL game. She was masterful early, getting keyway touches and attacking the basket to set the tone and show the team the way offensively. While the final stat line of 4 points on 2/12 shooting may not jump off the page, her 7 steals and only 2 turnovers showed she was attacking the right areas, taking care of the ball and making good reads consistently throughout the game. Her calmness and leadership gave our starting group great balance.

Coaches notes

We had sections of the game where we played some really good basketball. Particularly in the last quarter our ball movement in transition and our half court offence started to click we just didn’t make the most of our chances. Our defence was solid and we protected the basket a lot better than previous weeks. The girls are showing improvement week after week and they should be proud of their efforts.

Player of the game

Amber took responsibility in bringing the ball up the court through the press and did a tremendous job. She also made the right kick ahead passes and carved her way through the paint creating scoring opportunities for herself. Her effort on defence also stood out, rotating to help her teammates out and getting back quick in transition.

Coach: Adrian Mok

Won against Mandurah Magic (63 – 36)

Coaches notes

Great to see what we’ve been working on at training starting to translate into games, especially in the first half. The boys did a really good job running through our sets, moving the ball, and trusting each other to make the right play, which helped us consistently find the open shooter and create quality looks offensively.

The next step for us is sustaining that level for the full game. There was a noticeable drop-off in the second half, going from 40 points in the first half to 23 in the second. That comes down to maintaining our intensity, discipline, and focus for all four quarters. Defensively, I was really happy with the group’s effort and commitment. One of our goals was to keep the opposition under 40 points, and the boys achieved that by buying into our defensive rules and structure. When we defend the right way, it creates easier opportunities for us at the offensive end.

There’s still plenty to improve on, but we’re continuing to move in the right direction each week. Proud of the group and excited to see what we can achieve over the coming weeks if we continue to stay committed and keep building together.

Player of the game

Frank Verco – has been playing really consistent basketball through the opening rounds, and coming off the flu this week I wasn’t sure what to expect. Starting from the bench due to illness, he didn’t let that affect his mindset at all. He came straight into the game ready to compete and finished with 11 points. More importantly, he brought strong on-court leadership, helping get us organised offensively and defensively. This kid has the heart of a lion. Despite often being one of the smallest players on the court, he never lets that bother him or change the way he competes. His toughness, confidence, and willingness to battle every possession continues to stand out.

U14 Boys Team 2
Coach: Ben Marks

Loss against Hills Raiders (41 – 64)

Coaches notes

Consistency is key with our team. We match teams with talent, effort and skills and seem to lack the ability to play consistently for four quarters of basketball. There were some bright spots during the game as we had some strong contributions from a few that hadn’t been at the top of their game in recent weeks. We tried valiantly to battle with our opponent’s size and strength and pushed the ball in transition well but were unable to finish at the basket consistently. We will be focusing on defense this week with a tough matchup with Willetton 2 on the cards next week, building on the things we have been doing for the last few weeks.

Player of the game

Player of the round this week goes to Jett. He had his most consistent game so far this season pushing the ball in transition, attacking the basket, containing his man and moving well without the ball to get opportunities for himself and others. A nice, balanced game Jett! Special shout outs to Ollie, Freddie and Fletcher who played their hearts out on the defensive end this week to give us the best chance to stay in the game.

Won against Warwick Senators (52 – 47)

Coaches notes

A tough fought comeback win this week. The boys rallied together and played for one another, without giving up the entire game. After a back and forth first half, we went into the break tied up. The third quarter saw us down by 10 points after a good period from the senators. The boys stuck with it and kept playing, having a 21-7 4th quarter. Defensive minded play, mixed with some great team play and individual effort got us across the line for the first time this season! Fantastic game from the group.

Player of the game

Player of the round goes to Zarene Samson. Zarene was fantastic this week. He constantly made the right plays for his teammates creating plenty of assists, as well as creating for himself getting to his spots on the floor. Zarene was able to consistently get the ball up the floor whilst constantly being pressured the entire game, with minimal errors. Fantastic work Z!

Special mentions to Theo with 18 points, leading the group offensively, Harry converting some big shots, and Aiden for leading the team defensively.

Coach: Nathan La Cava

Loss against Binar Maali (50 – 56)

Coaches notes

Binar is a quick team with fast aggressive players who can really put up a score, they are the team to beat in our division , sitting top of the ladder with a healthy % and average winning margin of 26 points.
We switched our defence to a more contain & control rather than our more aggressive style which I prefer to run. This required the boys to be more disciplined and mindful of defending without fouling and quick to help and recover. We held Binar to their lowest score yet while only committing 9 team fouls all game. We also managed to create quite a few turnovers without giving up position or a foul.

Offensively we missed shots early in the game, which were the right shots to take. This left us chasing an almost 20 point deficit. We settled down and with patience we started to find the advantages. We still rush too often, with spells of poor ball movement, low percentage shots after only 1-2 passes. Late in the game we didn’t manage some of the pressure from their trap defence. Again we know what to do but it’s a battle between composure and panic we are still fine tuning. We played a good game, we continue to improve playing smart basketball as a team, looking forward to some more wins very soon.

Player of the Game

This game was a real team effort with everyone contributing and getting on the scoreboard. Player of the Game was Amir Castro Ogalde who was everywhere, doing everything… from solid defence, boxing out, rebounding, steals, quality assists, scoring, handoffs he was a quadruple double single!! Coach: Lawrence West

Won against Warwick Senators (75 – 33)

Coaches notes

A strong defensive performance set the tone for our game this week. Early pressure and high defensive activity made Warwick work hard for every bucket, while forcing turnovers at a high rate allowed us to capitalise and build a 20 point lead heading into the main break.

During the halftime break, the girls identified some weaknesses in our defensive scheme and we made a few adjustments. This sparked an incredible 3rd quarter effort that saw us win the term 27 – 6, defending with real intent while also playing some of our best connected offense of the season. The ball moved, we made good decisions once we created an advantage, and everyone did what was required to win each possession.

There is still plenty for us to keep working on, but I was particularly happy with our group’s ability to problem solve on the fly, make in game adjustments to things we haven’t necessarily practised a lot, and execute them effectively.

Player of the Game

Skylar Geary. This week, the full range of Skylar’s game was on display, earning her our Player of the Game. She had a huge all-round impact, finishing with 9 points, 6 assists, 6 rebounds and 7 steals. Her defensive pressure helped set the tone for the group, while offensively she did a great job creating for teammates and keeping the ball moving. Her ability to see the play developing before anyone else is an absolute weapon, and her passing is next level. Skylar’s decision making with the ball has taken a huge step this year, and I’m excited to see what she can achieve by the end of the season. A strong complete performance. Great work!

Loss against Lakeside Lightning (50 – 67)

Coaches notes

In a top of the table clash, we knew we were up for a tough battle. Lakeside came out strong, playing a physical style. It took us a while to adjust to the pressure, but after some reflection on how to buy ourselves time and space with the ball, we managed to find our flow and have successful stretches in the second and fourth quarters.

Our identity is rooted in playing aggressive. This game is a reminder of the need to stay true to our identity and to support one-another as a team. We’re grateful to Lakeside for the challenge and opportunity to learn from a tough game. I have no doubt we’ll be better for it.

Player of the game

Ava Zhu. In a game where we needed to dig deep and find our fighting spirit, Ava stepped up in a big way and led by example. Ava typifies the kind of intensity and persistence we endeavour to play with and does it every possession and every game. She is small in stature but a giant in how she battles and carries herself both on and off the court. Despite not being Ava’s greatest scoring game, it was the most timely and inspirational. Adored by her teammates, Ava is the heart and soul of the group. Another super effort, Ava!

Loss against Binar Maali (49 – 51)

Coaches notes

Another great game of basketball this week, decided by the narrowest of margins — just one shot. Unfortunately, we ended up on the wrong side of the ledger, but the effort and determination from the girls could not be questioned. It was a tough contest that was fought hard right through to the final siren. The girls continued to compete in every possession and showed great resilience throughout the game.

A major highlight was our disciplined and consistent defensive effort. Our defensive structure continues to improve each week, and the girls should be proud of the way they executed it across the game. To hold our opposition to 40 points fewer than last week’s opponent was an outstanding team achievement and a clear sign of the progress we are making together. While the result did not fall our way, the growth, commitment and belief within the group continue to build each week.

Player of the game

Eden Strauss-Tamati. In only her first season of WABL, Eden continues to grow in confidence while learning and understanding our team structures and systems. Her rebounding ability was a major strength throughout the game, and she did a fantastic job converting those rebounds into made baskets and valuable scoring opportunities for the team.

Coach: Andy Zell

Won against East Perth Eagles (73 – 48)

Coaches notes

A fantastic first win of the season away against Eagles 4, and a strong reward for the effort and commitment the group has been showing at training. The game began with a highly contested first quarter before we gradually built momentum through our intensity, defence, and teamwork. The group continued to improve as the game progressed, taking a 17-point lead into half time, which extended to 31 points by the end of the third quarter. While we took our foot off the pedal slightly in the final term, it was an important reminder about maintaining our energy, focus, and discipline for all four quarters.

There were several pleasing areas of growth across the group. Our bigs continue to show significant improvement, competing strongly for defensive rebounds, remaining composed after securing possession, and consistently setting up our offensive structure.

Special mention must also go to our two fill-in players, Sienna and Cassidy. Sienna has trained hard for her opportunity and stepped up brilliantly in the absence of one of our guards. Cassidy also answered a late call-up due to illness and contributed superbly with strong boxing out, rebounding, and a terrific three-point shot.

Player of the game

Giselle Wun earns Player of the Round after an outstanding all-round performance, scoring 16 points off the bench. As one of our co-captains, Giselle consistently brings positive energy and leadership to the group. Her impact was felt across every area of the game through her scoring, playmaking, tenacious defence, composed decision making under pressure, and excellent passing. A complete team performance.

We struggled this week with multiple injuries which left us short handed. We started poorly but we were able to keep it to a manageable deficit at halftime we came out strong and played our style in the 3rd qtr however with more injuries and foul outs we simply ran out of bodies.

Player of the game

This week goes to a player who week by week has gotten more confident and stronger, he was asked to step up into a bigger role which he responded superbly. A strong 17 pts 10 boards and overall playing a bulk of minutes while hampered with some soreness was character building.

Coaches notes

From a team perspective, one of the biggest positives was our execution in the fourth quarter when the game mattered most. We played with strong defensive intensity, which allowed us to secure important stops and create transition opportunities. Our unselfish ball movement and team-first mentality on offence were also key factors in our successful comeback victory.

Player of the game

Player of the Round was Sam, who consistently competed from start to finish. He led from the front with his effort and composure, creating quality offensive opportunities for the team, and knocking down the open shots he had. Also while, remaining super active on the defensive end. Sam also contributed several crucial turnovers and took a huge charge.

Won against Joondalup Wolves (83 – 59)

Coaches notes

We finally got the fast start we’ve been looking for, jumping out to an early 12–6 lead and forcing Joondalup to call a timeout. We maintained the momentum throughout the opening quarter, finishing the term strongly to take a 30–17 lead.

The second quarter turned into more of a grind as Joondalup adjusted defensively, but we stayed composed and continued to build our advantage, heading into halftime up 43–27. Joondalup switched to a zone defence in the third quarter and we struggled to adjust, allowing them to take the term 24–17. At three-quarter time, we made some key offensive adjustments of our own and responded with a dominant final quarter, closing out the game with a 23–8 finish.

Kyan led all scorers with 19 points, while Austin capitalised on some great team play to add 17 of his own. Alijah continued his strong form with another impressive performance, finishing with 14 points, and Damon added 13 after a dominant first quarter.

Player of the game

Coaches notes

The intent and discipline to our core values and action were evident early in the game, these young men came to play. We knew East Perth were going to come at us at some point in the game and they did that in the third winning the quarter 27-16, was a timely reminder from the team that when we deviate from the actions and disciplines we had early in the game how quickly a lead can get eaten up. To their credit they took their instruction in the quarter time break and executed to finish the game strong and win by 13 points.

Player of the game

Honorable mentions this week:
Lucas Aird: His relentless defensive effort and hustle plays may not show up on the stat sheet, but he does all the intangible things that contribute to team success.
Anthony Flores: Anthony was challenged pre-game and he took on board the feedback and actioned it accordingly, his leadership and control on the game was influential in the result.

Won against Perth Redbacks (79 – 71)

Coaches notes

Another strong win for the 18.3’s, built once again on relentless defensive pressure and effort across the floor.
The group continues to show their identity at that end, forcing a high number of turnovers (40) and disrupting the opposition’s ability to get into their offence. That pressure created extra possessions and set the tone for the game.
Offensively, there were encouraging signs with improved shot selection, as the team reduced settle three‑point attempts and looked to generate better quality opportunities through the paint.
While the result was positive, the performance also highlighted areas for continued development. After breaking the opposition’s press, the team didn’t always capitalise on the advantage, and improving the ability to flow quickly into their actions will be a key focus moving forward.
Overall, another important step in the right direction, with strong identity shown and clear areas to continue building on.

Player of the game

A well‑deserved Player of the Game performance from Ryker Phillips, who combined efficiency with real growth across the board. Ryker led with 21 points on 6–10 shooting (3–5 from three), while also making a strong impact at both ends of the floor.
His defensive effort, improved ball security (just 1 turnover), and developing leadership helped stabilise the group and lift our overall performance. Ryker continues to bring energy while adding composure and control to his game.
Strong performances also from Raff, whose all‑round impact and defensive pressure were excellent, and Ashton, who provided important presence inside and on the glass.

Coaches Notes

Every week we are getting better and better defensively. We gave up 77, 68, 63, and 58pts, as we slowly starting to find consistent play through 4 qrts not allowing teams to go on little runs or trade basket like it’s domestic competition. Our first game we gave up 77 to wolves 3, and this game we gave up 58pts to their team 2. Showing how much we have improved over the past 4 weeks.

We came out with much better intensity and intent to be a good solid WABL team, James, Deacon, and Jayden has assignments on defense with Xiang running as a on ball defender again. Our Shooters shot well, Xavier Parsons had one of his best games with the minutes he was handed impressive on both ends of the floor and Link West got physical and is slowly chipping away as he gets more physical each game. Sam was his usual reliable self grabbing rebounds, and picking up 4 fouls, meaning Tom had to played alot more by himself this game and the big lad was solid all game, taking the shots we wanted him to take and grabbing rebounds. Omid and Rajzhan the backcourt duo just put on a clinic on the offensive end, as well as defensive and also facilitating. To think how much better we will be once Arjun returns we’re in a very good position.

Player of the game

It’s takes a special special performance to win back to back weeks for Player of the game.. and my lord.. James was a game day decision having had a sore back and missing training. But he came out, was task with primary locking their wolves best scorer. He KILLED it, he had support from Jayden and Deacon, yet not only did James fly everywhere for rebounds and lockdown defense he chipped in with 10pts on 2 very efficient ‘Klay thompson’ like shooting form.
