Isaac Falconbridge (U14 Boys) – It’s been a long time coming but Isaac Falconbridge finally showed us that he has the capability of playing that role as a true point guard. Since State Champs this has been Isaac’s best showing in that role, with multiple ball handling duties with good efficiency. With only 2 turnovers on 50%FG with 10 points and 5 steals, 2 reb and 2 assist, the effort on defense has raised to another level. Well done Isaac.

Even though the final result did not go our way in the end, I still count this as win in my eyes. Sunday’s game was a tough, physical game that was not going our way that the girls didn’t respond to at first and tigers ended up with a 20-point lead. At the start of the fourth quarter, I asked the girls to play their game, the way they are taught at training and that’s exactly what they did the entire fourth quarter. The girls played their hearts out and we eventually brought the lead back to a draw and had to go into overtime. With several girls fouled out before the fourth qtr ended, the rest of the girls stepped up bringing the intensity we needed.
All nine of the girls fought until the very last second, keeping their heads up whilst playing the best they could! Especially our five that played an intense overtime whilst everyone was watching. I am so proud of every single one of them! The loss doesn’t matter as I saw some fantastic team basketball that I couldn’t be happier to watch. Good job girls!

Irene! Lauren and I said about five names to each other at the end of the game and one we could easily agree on was Irene! Irene did everything we asked for. Getting into the right spots, rebounding and sharing the ball according to our plays. Go Irene!

7 players again this week , but as a team it’s a great opportunity to really push those players on the court to achieve what we’ve been working on for the past few weeks. The girls really gave it their all, that constant ball pressure on defense to get the turnovers that got us to the ring time and time again. This weeks player of the round was a tough one as pretty much the whole team stepped up and did exactly what was asked of them and I could point a few highlights from each and everyone of them.

A great start to the game was pleasing as we have been slow starters up to now. Good passing and finishing and solid defense lead to a 7 point lead early in the 2nd quarter. Unfortunately from here our passing went wayward and turnovers cost us to the tune of a 15-3 East Perth run. The deficit ballooned to 13 in the middle of the 3rd quarter, but our boys turned up the defensive heat to another level and fought back with a 15-2 run to tie the game before 3 quarter time. The 4th quarter was back and forth until Preston Handgraaf hit a huge 3 pointer with 30 seconds remaining to break a tie. From there our defense stood up and some timely free throws secured the road win. We learned that although we got down by 13 in the game and we had no momentum, it was our mistakes that were hurting us. Once we tightened up our defense and took better care of the ball, we were able to get back in the game and have a chance to win.

In the 3rd quarter and the game slipping away from us during a big East Perth run, Derrick Coleman came in and sparked our defense that lead to several transition baskets and got us back in the game. He did not score himself, but he had several assists and passes that lead to baskets for his teammates from his defensive pressure. His ball handling and poise are improving every week. Derrick is our player of the game this week for being the sparkplug off the bench.

We had previously faced the Hills Raiders at the Hills Cup—a team that gave us trouble in the first half but one we managed to overcome with a stronger second half.
Today’s performance feels like a clear sign that the hard work we’ve been putting in at training is starting to click. The team executed both our offensive and defensive structures with discipline and confidence.
We’ve been placing a strong emphasis on defense and rebounding, and it really showed today. Our defensive pressure was overwhelming and forced numerous turnovers, creating easy scoring opportunities off poor passes.
Nate Farrier (19 points), Tane Broadwith (14 points), and Zac Daly (6 points) continue to be the engine room of the team, working tirelessly at both ends of the court. They were well supported by Zac Qian (6 points), who showed great effort around the basket.
Munashe Rukodzi brought energy and disruption off the bench, making his presence felt on defense. The game also offered valuable opportunities for Isaac Edwards (5 points), Jeremiah James (11 points), and Kevin Zhang to build confidence in their WABL games and showcase their growing skill sets.

AJ was outstanding, pouring in 32 points with deadly accuracy both in transition and from range. He also contributed multiple steals and demonstrated great court vision, often finding open teammates up the floor with sharp passes.

This week, we were pleased to welcome Lakeside White to Ray Owen for Round 3 on Mother’s Day. After a great Friday training session working on our outlet passing and transition game, the boys got off to an absolute flyer scoring the first 13 points thanks to impressive back-court pressure, forcing Lakeside into multiple turnovers and capitalising on the scoreboard. The Lightning were able to respond after an early timeout, coming out with increased on-ball pressure, providing a mirror image of the opening minutes to close the gap, seeing both teams heading into half time tied at 36-36.
The second half was a grind with Lakeside steadily increasing the lead to 9 points. Their sustained pressure led to some decision making errors and forced us into too many turnovers as a result of over-dribbling the ball. When we got the ball into the front-court our motion offence was effective, evidenced by an even scoring output across the board but unfortunately our guards weren’t able to get the support they needed to advance the ball at times. We did a good job getting into the paint, and finding the open man. We are getting better at making strong basket cuts, which will continue to be an offensive focus. The boys showed a lot of resilience to fight back well but came up just short on the score board in the end.
Defensively, we are starting to see the boys thinking “no middle” and trying to shape their opponents to the side and base lines into help coverage and with improved awareness off ball this will become even more effective. When our perimeter players work together as a defensive unit we cause genuine headaches for the opposition, however we need to improve our discipline in not reaching and getting into foul trouble. The coaches can see improved understanding of defensive fundamentals at training and periods where we apply this in games, but it is going to take a consistent four quarter effort to get our next win. Bring on the Tigers next week!

This week’s player of the game was Zarene Samson. Z is a relentless on-ball defender and smart in off-ball coverage. This week he showed an aggressive side to his offensive game, getting into the paint at will, generating good looks for himself and his teammates. Keep it up Z!

Lennox Greene was our Captain this week and was a force crashing the glass and also getting out in transition. Congrats also to Oscar Klaproth on earning his first start of the season after a focused week of training.

We’re still getting our bearings this season, adjusting to the hurdles thrown our way has not been easy and this team has a lot of potential when we are whole! It’s the beginning of the season and lots of lessons learnt already and this game just wasn’t our game, credit to our opposition on their pressure defense as it proved too much early on as we struggled even on the inbound. A slow start saw us trailing from the beginning though we didn’t make it easy for Cockburn ending the first 11-5 with Isaac showing great improvement committing to his shots nailing his And1 also sinking his jumper!
The second we were successful overcoming the oppositions pressure defense and with a bit more communication and settling into our shots we’d have achieved more points, they were some great looks and the shots made were very precise that left the gap still winnable.
3rd quarter wasn’t great…… Timing, positioning, ball movement and decision making was off. They didn’t fall apart they just couldn’t find their rhythm, not from lack of trying and credit where its due no-one on this team gives up no matter the score.
The last quarter I set the boys a task to forget the oppositions score and work on our own, make it to 30 from 20. The boys were successful which tells me and shows them when they focus on a goal it can be done, going forward I’d really like to see the basic things become second nature to them so we can work on honing our skillset elsewhere. Onwards and upwards!

Amir delivers every week, but this week we finally caught him orchestrating his teammates with the ball in his hand on offence. Its great to see his confidence grow and show that aggression we know is there to attack the basket with his jump shot and layups. Amir’s defense is what made all the difference this game leading in rebounds, steals and blocks, every time he swung he made a dent this game and had an answer for most of the attacks from the Cougars when he was on court. Amir has so much potential and we look forward to unlocking that piece by piece, keep it up champion!!!

We may not have come away with the win this week, but it was a performance our group can be proud of. The game had a real sense of things starting to click into place, and while our shots didn’t fall at the rate we’d like, the effort, structure and intent were clear to see.
This week’s mission was to win both the rebound and possession battle, and we did exactly that, pulling down more rebounds and taking more shots. Our offensive rebound count is a real testament to the team’s work rate and grit. That effort kept us in the contest and created a huge number of second-chance opportunities.
Ball movement was also a clear highlight. With 8 assists on 15 baskets, we showed a commitment to creating for each other and finding quality looks. Even though the shots didn’t drop this time, the offense looked strong and our shot selection remained disciplined.
The key area that let us down was free throw shooting. We went 9 from 26 at the line (34.6%), leaving a lot of points behind. That margin was the difference in a close game, and it’s something we’ll continue to address moving forward.
Defensively, our energy and effort was turned up to the max, and it’s clear our group’s identity is going to be built on that end of the floor. Our closeouts to shooters need to be more decisive, we can’t afford to be a step late when the Wolves are shooting 45% from deep.
I think we’ll look back on this week’s game as a pivotal moment in the season where we started to figure out who we are. Watch this space!

This week Emily took the team challenge of rebounding personally and delivered in a big way. She pulled down 14 rebounds, added 2 blocks and 2 steals, and shot an efficient 66.7% from the field.
More impressive than the stats was her composure and confidence with the ball in hand. Her ball handling under pressure has taken a big step forward, showing that all the extra work she’s been putting in at training is really starting to pay off. Well done, superstar!

Lakeside being the team to beat this year, the girls did a great job of making them work for the win – winning the first quarter and having close 2nd and 3rd quarters is a testament to how far this group has come in such a short time. Our D-Trans slowed the ball down and caused some turnovers to keep the game close and we had a team effort on the boards which saw every contribute.

What a game!
We travelled to Morley to take on East Perth in a match that went right down to the wire. The girls were pumped, especially Amelia Soka, who always seems to lift against the Eagles. We also welcomed back Abby, who slotted in beautifully, scoring 6 early points. Sandra was strong again in the paint, rebounding well and drawing key fouls.
We started strong, with tough defense and smooth offence to lead 12–4 at quarter-time. In the second, the Eagles pushed back. We struggled to finish and had a few turnovers, but stayed composed to lead 20–14 at the half.
The third quarter was a challenge—East Perth went on an 8–0 run and tied the game 24–24. The final term was a see-saw battle. The Eagles took a small lead, but the girls showed real grit. Amelia lifted with crucial baskets, and Hannah, Abby, Indigo, Imogen and Eliza P. all made key plays under pressure.
With seconds left and the game on the line, the girls stayed focused and sealed a thrilling 37–36 win at the buzzer.
An incredible team effort full of heart and belief. Proud of every one of them—bring on next week!

This week we saw how much difference a month can make even in basketball. After playing the Raiders in the Hills Cup last month and losing due to a variety of reasons, we were keen for this match up. The girls came out strong with high intensity defense and rebounding at both ends. They were looking for their teammates up the court to beat the defense and moving the ball to make space and get a good shot up. This resulted in a handy lead going into half time.
Raiders lifted their intensity in the second half and pulled back the margin, however our girls held their own and rose to the challenge. They matched the intensity and continued to keep to their game style and protect the paint. We are so very proud of how these girls are playing and developing their skills and teamwork. When the Raiders came back at us it would have been easy to drop their heads but these girls continued to fight and held on to secure the win. What a great reward for all the Mums to secure our first win for Mothers Day!

Zara is so cool, calm and collected on the court even under pressure. Her decision making around the basket makes it look like she has all the time in the world. She played a brilliant game as always this week with some great shots and finish. Her pressure on the ball created many turnovers and opportunities for her teammates.

A Mother’s Day afternoon clash at Kennedy Baptist college meant for a different game atmosphere. Coming up against a strong Lakeside team, we started well, achieving our focus of no easy buckets and getting shots inside the paint from our offensive sets. The first quarter was even, going basket for basket. The second and third quarters saw them open up a lead from some hot outside shooting. We then steadied in the 4th and won the quarter, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap.
I was most proud of the effort today and our ability to get the ball inside either from the post or hitting the cutters, which was a major focus at training. There was no secret that our two bigs Jason and Nathanael top scored. Taking care of the ball and committing far too many unforced turnovers really needs to be tightened next week. Another balanced scoring effort has us moving in the right direction as the season progresses.

This week’s player of the round was extremely difficult yet again, as all players affected the game in their own way. A standout offensive game from Nathanael was very hard to overlook, but I have gone for more of a quiet achiever this week in Henry. He rarely makes mistakes in games and this week was no different as he looked after the ball well, attacked the basket, played solid defense and always gives us some big 3-point shots when needed.

A new week, a new set of offense, and this week our focus was on playing 2 bigs inside like the good old 90s. We spent Tuesday and Thursday repeating over and over the offence and I’m confident to say that these boys ran to a solid Grade A result. The guards were so organised in communicating where to go to trigger the offense, a huge shout out to Medhi on viewing the footage again and Mark noticing that Medhi was the constant vocal leading telling his teammates where to go & what to set up.
The combination of Kian & Damon worked well with finesse while the combination of Austin and Brodie gave us some brute force & footwork. The guards all contributed as role players predominately for this game.
The game did start out in our traditional slow way, but once we emptied the bench led by Preston, the level of intensity went up tremendously on the defensive end. Combine that with lengthy guys like Kian, Damon, Hayden & a pesty Kobe with the intent of Preston, that 5 helped end a strong qtr and build a handy lead to start the 2nd qtr.
Isaac & Medhi were both solid on both ends today, which helped to keep the lead building up & up, with a special mention to Damon 18pts 7 steals on 80%FG

The girls came out strong this week, starting with a 20-6 lead. Our defense in the 1st quarter was exceptional; we dominated the passing lanes & pressured the opposition into multiple turnovers, showing the qualities of a good team. However, they fought back & took the lead by halftime, extending it to 16 points in the middle of the 3rd quarter.
I challenged the girls at the start of the 4th to return to the defensive intensity we displayed earlier, & they responded brilliantly. Our defense became relentless, and step by step, we began to close the gap. With 6 min left, the other team led by 12 points, but our girls mounted a remarkable comeback, as we cleaned up our passing game, ultimately winning by 4 points.
Despite being undersized & heavily outrebounded, the heart & determination of the team shone through. It was especially rewarding to see the fitness work from preseason (which the girls often complained & rolled their eyes about) finally paying off. It was a real all-around effort this week a player short. Well done girls!!

We entered round 3 with a clear intention, give greater effort and execute on both ends. Our plan worked. We jumped a tall and formidable Hawks team with lock-down defense and relentless pressure, which spurred our transition offense. At the end of the first period, we were 19 – 0 up. Our rebounding effort from all positions and offensive control helped us dominate the possession game.
At the beginning of the second quarter, the Hawks strung their first 2 baskets together. Our talk at the break was about withstanding inevitable runs from the other team. We showed mental toughness and stuck to focusing on the process and not the outcome. Digging down into our strength of disrupting the opposition with constant ball pressure, we weathered the storm and eked out wins across every period. The consistency of effort and focus was impressive and a huge improvement from the first 2 rounds.
The energy and support from the bench was outstanding. It really fuelled the team throughout the game.

This week’s game was a very competitive game throughout the 4 quarters and the girls never had any patches where they lacked effort or positive intent. We were a lot better with our defense and reduced our foul count while contesting everything. Our full court press and our press break was the best we’ve had this season.

Jenniquah Shadforth Cox. Jenniquah was incredible on both ends of the court top scoring with 19 points and her on ball defense was also really strong contributing in a lot of steals.

After splitting our first two home games, we hit the road across town to take on the Willetton Tigers and returned with a hard-fought win.
We controlled the game from the opening tip, pushing the lead out to 20+ points midway through the second quarter. Although Willetton managed to cut into the margin slightly, we still held a comfortable 18-point lead heading into halftime.
A sluggish start to the third saw the Tigers claw back to within seven, but a well-timed timeout helped us regroup and extend the lead back to 12 by the end of the quarter. From there, we maintained control and closed out the game strong.
Our defensive intensity proved to be the deciding factor, forcing 23 steals and generating numerous transition opportunities. Leading the charge was Tadiwa Kukodzi, whose relentless effort resulted in a staggering 12 steals.
While turnovers continue to be a challenge, we still managed to put up 91 shot attempts, converting 32. Our shooting from long range was below par hitting just 4 of 29 from beyond the arc and our finishing inside 10 feet will need improvement if we’re to remain competitive against top-tier teams.
The synergy between Ryker Phillips, Tadiwa Kukodzi, and Raymond Tafira continues to grow, contributing on both ends of the court. This week, Llafton Muller made a big impact off the bench with 22 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals. Tadiwa recorded his first triple-double of the season with 18 points, 12 steals, and 10 rebounds. Ryker added 12 points and 5 rebounds, while Raymond chipped in with 10 points and 8 rebounds.
Next week, we host the Hills Raiders, a team that’s had the upper hand in recent matchups. This game is very crucial and will be pivotal to shaping our season’s trajectory.

We had a real focus on defense throughout this weeks training and it showed today. The boys defensive effort and intensity was the best it has been this season.
We started strongly and built a nice solid lead 13-5, forcing the Eagles to call a timeout. From there we continued to play strongly but as we have done a couple of times this season, we lost a bit of focus late in the quarter and allowed them to get a 7-0 run to close out the quarter. This left us with only a 5 point lead.
From there we re-gathered our effort and intensity and started to grind away and play our style of basketball, finishing the quarter by holding them to only 9 points while we scored 29. This took the game away from them but we didn’t stop there and our 3rd quarter was another great effort to hold them to only 10 points.
Another strong effort in the 4th quarter keeping the momentum going our way enabled us to secure our first 100 point score of the season (with Ben hitting the last score to get us over the line)
Everyone played a great game today with Ronron scoring 23, Marcus & Ben with 16 each, Edzon with 12 points (including two 3’s)

The Flames are a team we know quite well having beaten them by 1 at Grading, we know their position on the ladder didn’t reflect how tough our opponent is. However, we showed just how resilient we are banding together in the 4th quarter to seal the win. Our impressive transition play and half-court continues to make strides as we prepare for our next opponent.
Player of the game
Ana Vletter, Ana was quite literally flying around the court not only intercepting multiple passes and causing deflections, but her continued use of speed to catch up to the ball and her ability to constantly give effort even when she’s exhausted. A fantastic effort!

This is an example of how the score doesn’t tell the whole story. Our collective energy and effort, especially on the defensive end, was the best it’s been this season, but maintaining that intensity consistently over 4 quarters continues to be an issue. We allowed several opposition-scoring runs that ultimately decided the game, including an 11-0 run in the first quarter and a 15-0 run to start the fourth. Reducing these scoring droughts will be crucial for keeping games closer as the season progresses.
Player of the game
Izzy Swann – last week in training, we discussed managing frustration on the court and its impact on performance. It was fantastic to see Izzy embrace this advice. She led our point-of-attack defense with her trademark strong on-ball pressure, forcing turnovers that created scoring opportunities. This sustained focus and defensive intensity also sparked her offensive game, leading our team with 16 points. Great work Izzy!

A common trend with our team – slow out of the blocks early, halftime we made some adjustments, the fellas fought through some adversity, started playing Suns basketball and ultimately got a much deserved W!

Coaches notes
Tough loss on the road in Cockburn with the team unable to soak up the pressure they were put under from the tip. Slow starts are unfortunately becoming somewhat of a habit that we will need to fix quickly. Some great fight and mental toughness from the boys though as they outscored Cockburn in the last three quarters. Unfortunately when you give up a 24 point lead in the first, its hard to come back from. We were also heavily outmatched on the glass with Cockburn recording more offensive boards than we had total. 19 second chance points is another thing you can’t give up and win the game. There were some great runs in the game and when we settled and ran our offence they struggled to defend us. Some good learnings for us in the review of the game.
Some fantastic individual performances for us, Mauric shot at 100% for 12 points and Zach led us on the scoreboard with 13 points, but backed that up with an impressive 9 rebounds on a day where boards were tough to come by.

Our player of the week this week is Sam. Sam battled hard all day at the rim and it was fantastic to see him get a double double for the day with 12 points and 10 boards. Sam had to fight for every possession against their bigs and every one of his points was him finishing through contact. If he had gotten to the line as many times as Cockburn, it may have been a different result! Great job Sam
