Round 2 – It was nice to see so many of our Suns teams playing at home, and great that so many of our players stayed behind after their games to cheer on our other Sun’s teams!

All of our “Player of the Game” superstars will receive a FREE PIZZA from our friends at Domino’s Kalamunda – Thanks Guys!

Players of the round:

Girls (U18 Girls)

Tessa Marsh – Her defense was amazing intercepting passes, blocking shots and hustling after rebounds. She played well in transition and was a spark for us.

Boys (U16 Boys)

Eusaint Espanola Had great control over the pace and flow of the game with the ball and consistently found himself the right passing and scoring options

U12 GIRLS (LAWRENCE WEST)

Won against Joondalup Wolves (37 – 20)

COACHES NOTES

This week was a very physical game, and our team showed great resilience to push through and block out the noise. While we still have plenty to work on our intensity and desire for the ball is fantastic to see.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Amber Brickwood – This week Amber anchored our team and kept calm throughout a tough matchup.

U12 BOYS (LIZZIE FALCONBRIDGE)

Won against Joondalup Wolves (50 – 38)

COACHES NOTES

Great team defensive effort pulling in 25 rebounds and 6 blocks. An amazing total of 22 steals with the pressure set from the start of the game. Offensively great ball movement with 12 assists as a team but still need to work on screening and off ball movement.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Nate Miles – Played at 110% the whole game on both ends of the court. Created lots of turnovers with his defensive pressure, was great to see him slow down in offense and using his head to take the right shot or create for his team mates.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS

Leyton Rooke – After a slow start he turned it around in the 2nd period and never looked back. Finished with a game high 14 points from 7/7 shooting, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 steals. Fantastic to see him come out of his shell and have a great game!! Shane Quartermaine – Improving defensively every week and learning to get more aggressive on the offensive end. Finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds and caused a lot of missed shots with his defensive pressure. Another player who is a quiet achiever but was awesome to see him not only have a great game individually but also for the team. Reuben Johnston – With limited minutes he went in with an aggressive defensive mindset and showed with 2 steals and 3 blocks, including a crucial chase down block at an important time in the game.

U12 BOYS (JOEL WARNER)

Loss against Joondalup Wolves (38 – 60)

COACHES NOTES

The team took a three-point lead into half time against a bigger, more experienced and more physical Joondalup team. The boys showed that when playing their best can, we can hang with the better teams. As a group we showed some intensity and effort and will improve when we manage game tempo, fouls and the pressures that come with WABL basketball.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Ethan Lord. Ethan made his WABL debut this week and made an immediate impact. Ethan’s energy and voice on the court provided confidence and motivation for other, inexperienced players. For Ethan to debut, as a starter is a great achievement and demonstrates his learning and progress that only comes through hard work at practice. Well done Ethan.

U12 BOYS (TIM HART)

Loss against Southwest Slammers (46 – 47)

COACHES NOTES

We achieved the objectives set at training – 1. more pass + cuts, 2. fewer turnovers from passes in this game, 3. more eyes on the ball in defense (moving with our head turned to see the ball and our player). Help defense looked better this week – more players realising they should be in help, watching their player and the ball.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Sebastian Brisk, for staying focused, and not becoming disheartened when the game slipped away at the end. Sebastian had a solid game, he worked hard for rebounds, and looked for open driving lanes.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS

Preston and Mathew helped pull down rebounds, and put some points on the board. Callum and Ram played their first WABL games today, each showed attention in defense and responded well to instruction from coaches.

U14 GIRLS (ANDREW HERBERT)

Won against Joondalup Wolves (47 – 35)

COACHES NOTES

Our first quarter set the tempo for the game and the girls kept it going throughout the next 3 quarters. Team rebounding was a area of focus from the previous week and improvement was shown pulling in 38 board collectively. A great team effort all around -“TOGETHER”

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Jessie Prior – Jessica battled, competed and played hard at both ends of the floor. Jess stepped up when other forwards got into foul trouble, giving it all by working hard at both ends of the floor, taking a charge and crashing the boards. A great effort with a double double. 11 Points – 11 Rebounds – 5 Steals

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS

A huge thank you to Macee Rothnie for stepping up and helping out another Suns team, the U16 Girls who only had 5 players. Thanks Macee for putting Suns first! Another couple of standout performances: Isla – 15pts – 5reb – 6steals Kaia – 6pts – 6reb – 6blocks

Down 4 players, the team held fast and produced a great win. Good use of the ball and team contribution.

U14 BOYS (LUKE POYNER)

Win against Hills Raiders (53 – 43)

COACHES NOTES

A good win for the team holding the lead from the start. Some solid defensive pressure saw us controlling the game in the first half with a 14 point lead at half time. Hills Raiders stepped up their game in the second half and pushed back hard to regain some ground in the 3rd quarter, but we broke their momentum in the final period and stretched the lead back out to finish the game with a 10 point margin.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Chayse Roberts – played a massive defensive game forcing plenty of turnovers and leading the teams push from the start. Bagged a solid 10 points.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS

Alfie Peacock stepped up with a great game inside the key at both ends pulling down some huge rebounds, blocks, winning plenty of contested balls and backing it all up with a hard earnt 8 points.

U14 BOYS (SHANNON TREW)

Loss against Willeton Tigers (38 – 40)

COACHES NOTES

Passing was very good and we had good Spacing. Boys never gave up.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Oliver James- huge efforts on the boards, kept running all game and tried to keep lifting his team mates till the final siren

U16 GIRLS (MATT HARDING)

Won against East Perth Eagles (49 – 33)

COACHES NOTES

A slow start for our girls but the 2nd quarter was outstanding. We Easily had 20+ offences to Eagles and we didn’t really have our long range on for pretty much the whole game. But in saying that the group really showed glimpses of Outstanding transition from a defensive Stop.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Lilly Ryder this young lady was outstanding from the tip off.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS

The whole group had a positive impact at 1 stage or another in this game, it was a good team effort.

U16 GIRLS (CHARLIE SMART)

Loss against Joondalup Wolves (34 -69)

COACHES NOTES

The team was Covid impacted this week and the girls were clearly uneasy from the start. Wolves came out exceptionally strong and as a result our girls saw themselves down by over 30 points at half time. They needed to find something in themselves to keep their spirits going and dug deep. Completely changing things up on court and a combination of shear determination, great team work and superb rebounding once again they finished the game strongly winning the third quarter and only dropping a mere 5points in the forth.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Caitlin Retel – Caitlin came out firing in the 3rd quarter. Everywhere on the court, securing some important steals and popping a beautiful 3 at a crucial time, excited and lifted the whole team.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS

We would like to thank Macee for stepping in to assist us from U14s. Macee fitted in seamlessly with the team and became an integral part of the game. Absolute pleasure having her join us.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS

Ivan Retel, played high pressure defence and took risks for the ball, winning the ball multiple times through steals and interceptions.

U16 BOYS (RAE D’SYLVA)

Loss against Southwest Slammers (79 – 80)

COACHES NOTES

We played a better game where everyone did their bit and we were able to score at a high level. We were making the extra pass to find better shots.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Jackson. Showed a lot of heart and hustle and always is very good with his positive energy and team motivation.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS

Few other players are coming into their own after the nerves from the first game.

U16 BOYS (TYRON NEIL)

Won against Hills Raiders (76 – 68)

COACHES NOTES

Got off to a fast start and led by 20+ at half time and even though they slowly closed the gap the boys dug deep and showed composure when it counted to keep a 8-10 point lead throughout the last quarter to take away the win by 8 points.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Tyler Egan played a solid all round game in offense scoring 22 points and was great taking ball in zone defense. He also stood up well against there full court press and cleared the ball easily back into our offense and contributed some good assists to get his team mates involved.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS

The boys worked hard together especially in defense given that we gave away a lot of height to the opposition due to missing our centre to illness.

U18 GIRLS (DYSON LOWE)

Won against East Perth Eagles (47 – 44)

COACHES NOTES

The energy we had all game was unmatched even though we couldn’t hit any of our shots the girls stayed together and kept the energy high

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Tessa. Her defence was amazing intercepting passes, blocking shots and hustling after rebounds. She played well in transition and was a spark for us.

U18 BOYS (COOPER LOWE)

Won against East Perth Eagles  (82 – 79)

COACHES NOTES

Everyone that stepped on the floor contributed and played their role. Very easy to coach when you can get subs through and everyone is playing their role for the team.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Player of the round could have gone to just about everyone, but this week it goes to Brayden Treasure. He stepped up with guys in foul trouble, made life hard for the other bigs inside and hit some big shots to swing momentum in our favour. Congratulations Brayden!

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS

A really good energy amongst the group which makes it really enjoyable to coach.

U18 BOYS (ANGUS HYWOOD)

Loss against Joondalup Wolves (66 – 93)

COACHES NOTES

Today we matched up against the top contender in our division which was to show us the standard to the division to play. Positives were that our game style, offence and team matched them however these were only in brief moments. Consistency remains the key to us discovering our peak potential. A 32-14 third quarter unfortunately took the game away from our boys mindsets and we spent the rest of the game chasing to catch up. I am proud of how we finished the game by out scoring them in the 4th quarter. It is a long season ahead and the growth as a team is happening, I am excited for the rise of these Suns boys.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Josh Crosbie – After receiving 3 early fouls playing great team minded defence, Josh adjusted his game and became an offence juggernaut! Josh worked hard on defence diving on loose balls and leading on court. A great game Bluey!!

U18 BOYS (HAYDEN BIRD)

Loss against Perry Lakes Hawks (46-112)

COACHES NOTES

First quarter was a major turn up and we can start off really well, 50% of the boys where able too o keep the game intensity high besides the loss and being able to help out the team defenseless and offensively

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Lucas requiro, was scoring whenever had the chance while Also playmaking and getting his other teammates going and open. Didn’t drop his head and kept playing no matter what

U18 BOYS (RICK BATISTA)

Loss against Rockingham Flames (70-75)

COACHES NOTES

We played with 6 players due to covid and injuries and just never gave up. We asked players to perform outside of their comfort zones in roles they’re not accustomed too and we learned a lot about ourselves.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Adam Charlton … coach is extremely hard on him and performed his roles for the team today really well

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS

Charlie Woolfrey was a spark offensively even with 4 fouls, Saxon Counsel was great as our only guard all day he didnt stop trying and kept us in the game. Congratulations to Rhiley Gardner on his WABL debut.

U20 BOYS (DAN VLAHOV)

Loss against East Perth Eagles (73-79)

PLAYER OF THE GAME
