Mia Dobie – (U16 Girls Orange) – Ascending in her role as a dynamic downhill scoring guard, Mia hit new heights against the Senators. She was assigned the job to attack the opposition’s star player and get her into deep foul trouble. 2 minutes later, the Senators had no choice but to sub out their lead point guard. From there the game turned. It stands as an example of how Mia has developed greater control and understanding of how to impact the game with her skill and athleticism. To be honest, it is not easy to find positives in a 54 point loss. Our energy was low, there was no defensive intensity and as soon as the deficit began to expand the boys started to get frustrated and dropped their heads. Cockburn did play a great game, but it is beginning to be a pattern that we are seeing great basketball played against our defence. Maybe the best part of this game is that we have avoided playing them in the quarter final next week. We still have a lot of work to do to win next week though.
Player of the Game
Spencer Massam was our player of the game this week. In a poor team game, he was one of the few that never gave up and fought to the end. He put pressure on the defence getting to the basket and hustled hard. We needed more of him. Well done Spence.

East Perth remain the benchmark side this season, unbeaten and setting the standard across the competition. We had competed strongly against them in our previous meeting, but this time our effort and energy at both ends of the floor were not at the level required. While we had patches of positive play, too often we failed to value possession. Turnovers and rushed decision making on our passing and playmaking gifted East Perth easy transition baskets. On top of that, we didn’t commit as a team to rebounding and contesting loose balls, areas where East Perth simply wanted it more. A poor second quarter really hurt us, and although we lifted our intensity in the second half and were able to compete more strongly, the damage was already done. It was an uncharacteristic performance, and one that should serve as a valuable reminder. We know the level we can play at, and we’ll use this result as motivation to drive ourselves higher heading into finals this weekend.

Munashe “Magic” Rukodzi is our Player of the Game. Munashe was outstanding off the bench, bringing energy, hustle, and determination when the team needed it most. His relentless effort lifted our spirit in the second half, sparking opportunities in transition and forcing valuable stops that slowed East Perth’s momentum. A great example of how effort and attitude can change the flow of a game, well done, Munashe!

A pleasing effort despite the score, our seasons had every challenge imaginable yet here we are week after week trying to hone our skills and better ourselves in every aspect of the game! Our boys took a hit this week but still maintained positivity and unification through thick and thin, they here to learn and prepare themselves for their own journeys ahead and have never let the score, adversity, challenging conditions or hard lessons bring them down. We face the top team again this week in finals and while we know what’s ahead we will continue to push forward and achieve our own goals once again and hold our heads high as a team!

Where did the season go? It was great to finish the regular season with a win, even with illness and injury limiting us to just 7 athletes. Fatigue was a factor, but the effort and commitment to play for each other was clear. It wasn’t always polished, yet we dug in, stayed connected, and found a way to get it done.
Our spacing and shot selection were positive, creating the looks we wanted. Even though our 3pt shots didn’t fall at a high rate, the intent was there and that’s encouraging heading into finals. Free throws continue to be a focus area that is holding us back. Overall, this was a gritty win and a great way to close the regular season. I’m excited to see what this group can do in finals and hopeful our injury run is finally behind us.
Player of the Game
Dani Simmons was superb in leading the way for us. She finished with 19 points, 6 assists, 4 steals and 6 rebounds in an all-round performance that lifted the team at both ends. Dani attacked with intent, hit shots when we needed a lift, and created scoring chances for teammates with her decision-making. A lot was asked of her this week and she delivered with a composed, high-impact effort.
Special mention to Emily Sunderland, who responded to the physicality of the defense with 17 points on 8/10 shooting, 14 rebounds, 3 blocks, 3 steals and an assist.

The last game of the regular season was a strong statement from our group, finishing with a 63–36 win (18–13, 15–9, 13–2, 17–12). Our plan was to apply pressure defense all game and stay patient on offense. The first quarter was a battle—we jumped to a 9–2 lead, but the Slammers fought back. Credit to our girls for sticking to the plan and finishing the quarter up by five. In the second, we found our rhythm, moving the ball, creating space and playing unselfishly to take an 11-point lead into the half. The third quarter was the turning point—our backcourt pressure forced multiple turnovers, fueling transition baskets. The Slammers only managed two points, both from the line, as we closed 13–2. In the last quarter we set another challenge and the girls delivered with some of their best team basketball of the season—defensive pressure, rebounding, patience and trust in each other. This was the type of performance we’ve been working towards all year. A great way to finish the regular season, but we know we’ll need to go to another level to succeed in finals.

This week the Player of the Game goes to the whole team. Our hard work is turning into confidence and trust in one another. Ruby Chang’s tireless run led to 13 points, Amelia Soka showed leadership with 12, and Eliza Prevett was strong at both ends with 11. Indigo Anderson added 8 and was a defensive pest, Imogen Chambers was everywhere with steals, assists and 6 points, Sandra Chan 5 with strong work in the paint at both ends, and Abby Duggan showed great composure under pressure. Eliza Eaton’s off-ball work was outstanding, while Hannah Fulton and Zara Kwiatkowski brought relentless defensive pressure, smart positioning, and excellent rebounding throughout the game.

This week we set the girls the challenge of playing hard in all quarters in preparation for the finals. We also added a new defensive mission for a couple girls which they did well. The girls continue to move an pass the ball well and make great shot choices in a game. They show great composure in making their shots most of the time resulting in more shots going in. We did have a few lapses where we lost our way bit but overall we are so very proud of this lovely bunch of girls regardless of what happens next weekend.

Cass was thrown into a different role during the game and she did an excellent job in executing. Her pressure was intense in defence and she made some great rebounds offensively as well. Her pressure was spot on. Special mentions to Jaslin also always bringing high intensity in defence and also Sophia who is always rebounding.

The first quarter was an even back and forth contest, going basket for basket. In the second, we allowed our opponents to go on a run as they pushed the ball in transition for some easy baskets and got some offensive putbacks. We made a focus to get back in transition in the second half and box out stronger, doing a better job of stopping their runners as well as getting to the rack in transition ourselves. We continued to match them on the boards but ultimately could not close the gap. A buzzer beating three to end the game from Lucas helped our percentage going into the finals. Another strong game from our big men Nathanael and Jason, Alex got his points with some strong drives and Cohen really set the tone for our defense once again.

Player of the round this week is Fletcher. This week, he looked comfortable in his third game back from a serious neck injury showing some serious resilience. He gave us hustle, rebounds and more importantly played some textbook interior defense against a team that has a few athletic bigs, getting a number of blocks and intimating them into some key missed shots. It is great to have you back as an important part of our big man rotation!

Heading into this game we had thought we would be playing Rockingham first week of finals until the team above them lost an EV pt. Still there was a possibility, so the thought of losing this game was very much on the cards to not show them too much. It wasn’t until the last few minutes that we knew we weren’t playing them in the first week that I told the boys lets win it. We controlled the scoreboard for most of the game with our rotations, the heavy minute players during the season sat most of the game allowing others to get themselves into some form coming to the finals.
Issac ran the point incredibly well being aggressive from the get go with a solid 8pt 5reb 4 assist 2 steals game, Hayden had a team high 9 rebounds in the absence of our Austin Kian and Damon when they weren’t on the floor, with Brodie also playing extended minute as the big this game and having a solid 8pt 6reb 3assist 1 steal game. Even tho we won, the biggest win was the form and confidence for the second unit got from this game as well as no injuries at all. A successful regular season with 15 wins 1 loss finishing 1st. Congratulations to the parents and the players, now it’s a new ball game and we have to win 3 games to win it all!

Issac Falconbridge had one of his best game being aggressive offensively as well as chasing down shots and creating opportunities for his team mates and being aggressive when he needed to be. His decision making is getting better especially towards this second half of the season post break and it’s very evident he’s understanding how to look for players as he’s driving in and to make the call to pass or to shoot.

We started the game off very slow with minimal intensity, with mandurah taking a 2 point lead into the 2nd quarter. The boys then picked up their energy levels and produced our best quarter of the game, beating Mandurah 26-7 through great defence and running in transition. The rest of the game stayed consistent with patient offence and suffocating defence.

We had 2 players of the round this week, Sven Neuhaus and Issac Data. Both produced their best games of the season, their ability to work within the team and keep playing with intensity for the entire game was outstanding to watch. Issac getting into 20+ points and making play after play for other people, with Sven’s amazing defence and finishing under pressure. Both were well deserving this week!

This week, the girls truly gave it their all, even with two starting players missing. While it wasn’t the finish we wanted for our last regular-season game, their determination was commendable, fighting until the very end despite running out of gas. We held an 11-point lead with about three minutes left in the third quarter but struggled to sustain it. Rockingham out-rebounded us 86 to 48, which proved challenging, and we had 37 turnovers that hindered our momentum.
Despite these setbacks, we showcased our offensive skills, with our best game from beyond the arc, hitting 10 three’s. Holly Marsh was very good with 18 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists, while Olivia Geary shine with 22 points with 9 rebounds and 5 assists. Charlotte and Gabbi also excelled, with offensive outputs of 19 points and 13 points, both season highs. While we didn’t secure the win, the effort and growth this season have been impressive. We’ll carry these lessons forward as we prepare for our first final this week.

This week, it was tough to select a Player of the Week since many girls stepped up offensively and made significant contributions. While their points may not fully reflect their impact, their efforts in defense, ball movement, and support were crucial to our performance. Heading into a top of the table clash, we were up for a battle. The Senators brought the heat early and forced us to wake up to the challenge that lay before us. In a tight first quarter, we contended with losing players to foul trouble and injury. Going into the second period trailing, we needed players to step up and play important roles for the benefit of the team.
Across the board, all of the girls showed out, playing their roles and asserting our dominance on the defensive end. We quickly jumped ahead and never looked back, winning the second quarter 22 to 9 and limiting Warwick to just four points in the third.
Heading into finals, we have a clear identity as a defensive team. The girls have grown together over the season and know how to battle adversity as a unit. Their collective mental strength, determination and basketball IQ are qualities they’ve learnt to tap into when needed.

Our final game of the season saw us take on willeton. We have won our last two games in a row beating the top side in on of the games. The win this week was a hard fought one with every player on the team contributing towards the win. We started well and then lost momentum to be down at half time. The second half saw the girls come out with a never give up attitude and ran their trap where we turned the game. It was a incredible way to finish the season as we moved from last position to finish 7th on the ladder. There has been a lot asked of the girls this season and they have never disappointed. One of the best supportive group of each other that i have been lucky to have coached.

Victoria Mathiang. Victoria has improved every game and had her best games so far with 9 points 15 rebounds 5 blocks and 3 steals. She has improved in a big way from the start of the season as she’s is new to basketball and this being her first season of WABL.

We played the second placed team Lakeside this week. A good challenge as we have previously struggled to score against Lakeside only managing 23 and 29. This week the team came out with a purpose and managed to score 45 which was a pleasing result. Great job by the team and we are looking forward to the finals this week.

Great games from Ava, Daphne, Angelena and Lily. Player of the week was Lucy, who is usually played as a center but was was asked to play as a lock down defender. Lucy also scored 9 points and was a beast on rebounds. Great effort Lucy.

The boys closed out the regular season in style with a statement win over a top-ranked opponent. Facing the Senators Green for the third time after splitting the season series 1–1, we set our focus on rebounding and limiting turnovers. It paid off. For the first time this season, we dominated the glass 54–43. The Senators struck first and led for the opening three minutes, but once we caught up, there was no looking back. We controlled the game throughout, stretching the margin to as much as 15 points.
The Senators pushed hard, but our composure and defensive intensity blunted every charge. Winning the rebound count at both ends was a huge step forward, and while turnovers remain an issue, the progress was clear. Llafton Muller led all scorers with 21 points and 5 assists. Kieran Dunn marked his first starting-five spot with 11 points and 4 rebounds. Double-doubles came from Raymond Tafira (10 points, 11 rebounds) and Tadiwa Rukodzi (14 points, 12 rebounds). Ryker Phillips stayed consistent with 18 points and 7 rebounds, while Prince Balila and Amani Kongawoin added 8 points and 9 rebounds respectively.
Next weekend we face the Senators again in the quarterfinals: a blockbuster clash in the making.

Llafton has steadily grown into his role this season, and in recent weeks he has become a true force on the court. His speed, conditioning, and relentless activity have been key to his floor leadership and have played a major role in our team’s success. Llafton’s impact goes beyond the scoreboard. Was pleasing to get the win today, especially considering how the game went last time we played. Overall we played much better than last week, which was pleasing. Overall I think we played well but our touch around the basket was quite poor today. If we can fix that up, then I think this game doesn’t get as close as it was. It was also pleasing to see how we can grind out games when we need to. The 2nd and 3rd quarters were great examples of that, we got stuck in and built up a nice 8 point lead. Unfortunately we were unable to contain some of their pick n roll’s throughout the 4th quarter and then a buzzer beater 3 point shot from the Slammers sent the game in to overtime. We stuck to our structure and played strong through the overtime and it came down to a foul on the siren while the score were level. Ben was able to go back and hit both the free throws to secure the win.

Ben Milczuk gets player of the game this week. He got 3 fouls early on but was able to regroup and play hard defence without committing another foul while also scoring 25. Edzon also had a great game off the bench to score 17.

Our Suns Blue had a fast start against another top tier contender in Bunbury. We did an outstanding job managing the ball this week, minimizing turnovers & tripling our assist count from last week, showing how we can play when we share the ball. The Team stuck to the game plan & held a quarter time lead. Despite a difficult quarter 2, we were competitive, down only 5 at the half. As the game wore on, we were worn down, although we managed to get within 6 at a point late into quarter 3. I am though, pleased that we went down fighting, quite literally with Will getting a bad bump in transition & Sam nursing a split/ bloodied lip from an elbow. On Sunday we were not able to keep pace in transition, but we gave our best effort. No excuses, we weren’t quite there, but we tried. We understood what we needed to do to stop our opposition, we were just a little outgunned by our opponent. This season should be defined by overall learning. Some players came in with an understanding of the game, while some came in great athletes. We were able to put a recipe together & built our own unique style of crafty defence & courageous offence. We played all year with great ambition & the boys should be proud of themselves. James & I certainly are.

Player of the Game is Artin, special mention to Sam for leading effectively as an on-court general without the ball. Artin had a mixed bag of everything; scoring, rebounding & assists, but most importantly limiting turnovers to just 1, which he’s worked hard on all season. He handled a tough defensive role & created a mismatch that helped us build momentum in quarter 1. His ball-handling has always been sharp, but what stood out on Sunday was his ability to read & deconstruct defences before making a move. Artin’s instincts are excellent, but Sunday, he showed what his learning & thought his way through the game, solving those in-game puzzles. As Coach, it was a pleasure watching it unfold.

In the final game of the regular season, the team came together well against a tough opponent with improved teamwork and energy. Despite the result, the girls showed strong unity and effort throughout. Every player contributed, and the defensive intensity was improved, holding the opposition to 11 fewer points than in our last matchup. I was particularly pleased with how we handled their press. It was a focus in training, and the girls responded well, taking much better care of the ball this time around. We’ll regroup this week and build on the positives as we prepare to face an undefeated Joondalup team in the finals. A big thank you to Kylie and Abby for stepping in to coach while I was unwell—your support was greatly appreciated.

We had several standout contributors this week. Izzy returned from injury to lead the team with 18 points, Jess continued her strong form battling for rebounds against taller opponents, and Holly toughed it out on a sore ankle. Our Player of the Game was Mia Crofts—one of our most consistent performers. She stepped up offensively, taking smart shots, drawing fouls, and attacking the basket fearlessly. We knew our final game was going to be a tough matchup as we suffered a 55-point loss the last time we faced the Redbacks. But after showing steady improvement week after week, we were determined to finish on our terms, stepping onto the court with an all-or-nothing mindset and delivered a statement, 21-point WIN closing out the season.
From ball up, we matched intensity with poise. We adjusted to every challenge, making smart decisions and applying relentless defensive pressure. Offensively we were aggressive with the ball, playing off two feet in the paint and constantly attacking, either finishing strong or finding the receiver spot for high-percentage opportunities. The team controlled the tempo, stayed disciplined, and never backed down.
They executed everything asked of them, hustled on every play, and supported each other from start to finish. It was a full team performance and a well-earned reward for the perseverance shown all season long.
Player of the Game
For this game, the nomination goes to everyone. This win simply wouldn’t have been possible without the contribution of every single player, on and off the court.
From start to finish, the team brought unmatched energy, intensity, and focus. Whether it was making plays, diving for loose balls, or lifting each other up from the bench, every role was embraced with determination and genuine positivity. They were united, relentless, and completely locked in.
This was the definition of a full team performance and every player earned this recognition.
