Although it was a loss, this is a win for our team. Rockingham is a tall, solid team, and we might be the shortest team in the division, but that did not stop the girls this week, and I could not be prouder. We led the majority of the game, gaining as many rebounds and earning each score, but by the fourth quarter, we were exhausted, having to outjump the bigs and work that much harder on our side. That doesn’t bother me, as we can work on that, but you cannot coach effort, and the girls just naturally have that. The first time we played Rockingham, we started slow and had to crawl our way back, but ended up losing by 18. This week, we started strong, and if the ball had gone in the hole, we would have won by a fair margin. Only losing by 9 to a team that beats the others by 15+ with a key big out is a massive improvement, and I couldn’t be prouder. Good job girls!

After winning our last 2 games, there was hope that we could move up the ladder with a winnable game against Rockingham. Unfortunately our defense let us down. Allowing 70 points in a game is not a good result for us. We were forced into several turnovers in the backcourt too, which was uncharacteristic of us lately. One bright spot was our ball movement and poise when we were able to advance the ball to the front court. Our 59 points was 1 point shy of our season high, and a 21 point last quarter got us back in the game but some defensive lapses shut that door. Our passing is still improving every game and enjoyable to watch when we are clicking.

It was hard to separate our 2 best players, so we have 2 players of the round. First, Kirath Dhanjal was easily our best defender today. He brought hustle and enthusiasm to create problems for Rockingham’s guards. He also ran the lanes and finished fast breaks and in the half court. Second, Freddie Coleman used his strong frame to be a force inside. He grabbed some strong rebounds and had a couple of nice finishes inside. Great job boys.

This was a solid team performance from the Suns following the holiday break. We played a consistent, team-oriented game that showed solid effort on both ends of the court.,Defensively, while our intensity wasn’t quite at the level we know we can reach, we still applied good ball pressure and created several opportunities through steals and forced turnovers. Importantly, we didn’t allow many easy looks in the key, which is a positive takeaway. On the offensive end, we generally moved the ball well. At times, we might have benefited from making one extra pass to open up a better shot, but the boys found gaps in the defence and were able to get some clean looks. We did miss a number of those, which I’ll put down to shaking off a bit of post break rust and needing to find our rhythm again.
All in all, a great team effort with clear areas to build on as we settle back into our stride.

AJ Brar was our Player of the Game. AJ had a good all round game with good defence leading to stops and ball steals. Backed up with being reliable with the ball making sold drives and shots in addition to good passing to get team mates open. Well done AJ!

A pleasing effort playing the Redbacks again and huge improvement from our first encounter, although some sickness spread through the team we were off to a great start grabbing a short lead and a HUGE shootout to Hugh relentlessly attacking the basket with fantastic precision as he provided much needed aggression and strong finishes! Redbacks started chipping away in the second capitalising on our inbounds and us trying to find our second wind, this time lil Jax stepping up with fantastic on ball pressure doing his best to slow down their offence. The third we were running short on healthy fresh pairs of legs, with Amir working hard and Andrej doing his thing we did what we could, it just wasn’t our quarter. Last quarter was all us and that’s what this team is made of, players that have eachothers backs with everyone doing their bit we outscored them and outplayed them. Through unnecessary aggression throughout the game the boys played with integrity, its always great to see them challenge themselves and stay united and achieve their own goals!

Jaxon Keene – Every team needs a Jaxon Keene, no stat will ever show Jax’s work ethic & while shootings not always his play Jax gave his all & his on ball pressure was the best, the tides seem to change when you weren’t on court this time. The ball doesn’t have to be in his hand for the opposition to know he’s ready for you, Jax’s decision making lead us to quite a few important looks which kept the pressure on. Jax is where he needs to be when you need him to be there, he’s often the fastest & contributes in a way that helps the WHOLE team. You are a very important part of the team & you’ve impressed us more than you realize, big things come in small packages legend! Phenomenal effort!!!

This was absolutely a tale of two halves. A slow and disjointed first half saw us down 13–18 heading into the main break and struggling to find any momentum. But after halftime, we came out as a different team. We regrouped, lifted our defensive talk and energy, and stormed home with a dominant 26–7 second half to take the win comfortably.
Our defense really set the tone, helping us stay connected and creating opportunities in transition. Once we started spacing the floor and trusting each other with the kick-ahead pass, the court opened up and our offence began to flow. We still need to get more comfortable finishing through contact and making the most of our free throws (7/22), but we showed great resilience to bounce back and find momentum when it mattered most.

Dani was huge for us today, stuffing the stat sheet with 8 points, 6 assists, 5 steals, 7 rebounds and a block. She brought the energy when we needed a lift and was a beast on defense from start to finish. Her hustle, game sense, and ability to read the play made a real impact at both ends. Best of all, she made her teammates better by drawing attention with her shifty handles and using her creative passing to open up great scoring opportunities. U14 Girls White – Push Cougars to the Wire
We traveled to Wally Hagan Stadium fired up for a rematch against the Cougars, who beat us by 10 last time. This time, the girls brought the fight. All week, the focus was on sustained effort—going beyond the first contest. From the start, the intensity was there. We couldn’t convert on all our hard work in Q1 and Q2, heading into half-time down 18–21. The third term, which let us down last game, became our best. The girls moved the ball well, applied pressure, and played smart basketball, outscoring the Cougars 17–9 to take a 5-point lead into the final quarter. The last quarter was tense. Several calls didn’t go our way and early foul trouble gave the Cougars an opening. They capitalised late, breaking through our defence in the final seconds to steal the game, 44–46. It was a tough loss, but one full of positives. The team showed heart, grit, and played some of their best basketball this season. Our defence remains a strength, and the offence continues to improve. Proud effort—on to the next!

Sandra Chan takes out Player of the Game, top scoring with 16 points and knocking down 3 clutch triples when we needed them most. She was relentless on both ends, setting the tone with her work rate and leadership.

Everyone was pumped for the return of basketball this week, and what a way to return but a hills derby. We knew raiders would be out to get us after losing earlier this season so knew we would have to be on our game. Unfortunately we had an injury and another player struggling with illness for the second half. Having only the 2 subs hurt us but to the girl’s credit they all fought hard. They continue to make great space and decisions on the court although sometimes could take more time shooting, however Rome wasn’t built in a day. They could have rebounded stronger this week and that showed in the score. Ultimately we ran out of legs in the last quarter but they all did us so proud!

Ellah played a absolute blinder of game. She bought the hustle as always, rebounding strong and making great space and decisions. Ellah always works hard to create opportunities and it was great to see her rewarded for them. She is a natural leader on the court remembering the plays and always using her voice. Keep it up Ellah

This week, the boys managed to put together 4 consistent quarters which resulted in a strong win. The game started with an even first quarter, with Henry hitting a buzzer beating three points shot to give us momentum into the second quarter, winning it 12-5 to give us a slight edge at half time. The third and fourth quarters were basket for basket, as there was little difference between us and our opponents. Some great composure on the court and solid defense allowed us to hold on for a 2 point win.
The coaches were very impressed by the boys improved physicality, especially on the boards, restricting second opportunities. Our perimeter defense was also strong, closing out on shots and coming up with some key interceptions and steals when we needed them down the stretch. Playing with confidence and composure, we looked after the ball down the stretch when the game was tight which is a credit to the boys on the floor

Player of the round this week goes to Nathanael. He played a fantastic all-round game and played aggressively down the stretch when we needed him the most. Strong drives to the basket, hitting key outside shots and dominating the boards saw Nathanael be a major contributor to the win. Well done, Nathanael!

The Holiday break did wonders for the boys, the positive take away started from the final game before the break as the players themselves organised a day out together without any of the adults and spent the entire day walking the shops, playing games, secret santa, lunch and movies. Something Mark and myself was surprised at as we were both talking about what to do for the mid season gathering. This translated through to the latest training session we had and through to today’s game against the wolves. Where you could clearly see how unselfish the boys were and sometimes too unselfish at times, as they are now looking to get the ball always to the next player. We had just lost Medhi for the season and today without Preston due to sickness, and yet the boys felt confident from the get go even with players down it felt like we had so much depth and chemistry it was very easy for Mark and myself to just rotate players on and off.
The game was a close one for awhile, but as the game wore on, and the way this season has gone through we grind out the win with constant pressure and poise. Christian, Issac, Kobe, Kian, Damon, Hayden, Chandler, Austin, Brodie are the highlights and the positive takeaway for today’s game! 1 through 9.

Hayden Taylor has been slowly breaking through game by game, and there was one moment during Thursday training I challenge him to challenge any one that’s in front of him regardless of the result he just have to take it on his own shoulder and get inside the paint. He showed a lot of that today and had one of his best game, with a season high 8pts 3rebs 3 steals and 1 assist in what was a very very efficient outing when he was on the court. It’s been a week by week progress since state champs, but you can see that he is building resiliency, confidence, no whining and it’s a testament to both Simon and Nyaree with how they are letting me pushed him to the limits. Well done Hayden.

Player of the round this weekend was William Butterworth, starting for the second time this season with one of our starters being out. Will had blinder of a first half, scoring 7 quick points including a big 3 to force a timeout from the flames. He continued to play with discipline and create opportunities for his teammates, as well as having multiple steals in our press and having limited fouls throughout the game. This game showed how far Will has come from being picked as a DP, to now having opportunities to start and show why he deserves to play. Well deserved!

This week, despite a slow start, I was really impressed with the girls’ performance. At halftime, we were down 23-18, largely due to Cockburn’s buzzer-beaters in the first and second quarters and our inability to put the ball in the ring, we scored 7 points in a tough second quarter we’d like to forget. However, we remained positive. Our rebounding was notably better, leading to more opportunities, and our defence was on point, keeping the opposition to just 23 points in the first half. Charlotte Rose’s ability to keep the scoreboard ticking over for us was so important when she was on.
In the second half, I simplified our offence, which allowed us to explode for 51 points – one of our best second-half performances this season, when attacking the paint off of our SKE’s and we looked on the reverse side, we found open shooters and they delivered. We also finally won the rebounding battle, 79 to 50 (which will cost me Pizzas but will be the best money I’ve ever spent) in particular, showcasing elite offensive rebounding with 31 O boards. Remarkably, we accomplished all this while shooting just 28% for the game.

This week’s Player of the Game is undoubtedly Gabbi Joy! Her timely 3s were crucial when the game was on the line, showcasing her talent as a top-notch shooter. With 6 rebs and 2 stls, Gabbi Joy was impressive, but it was her aggressive play in attacking the paint that truly stood out.
I want to mention Holly Blair 26 points, 15 rebs, and 5 stls, Tilly Susan 15 rebs and Ella Jade, with her remarkable running ability, added 13 points and 11 rebounds. A special mention goes to the bench mob, who were positive despite limited minutes, cheering on their teammates throughout the game, even in challenging moments.

Our girls brought great energy from the outset in another impressive showing. The team emphasis is to always bring ball pressure and to be disruptive at the defensive end. As a unit, we forced difficult shots, directing drivers into walls of players. Our physical and aggressive approach once again helped us win the possession battle whilst generating repeat fast -break opportunities. Week to week, the girls are growing stronger as a unit. Their dedication to put in the hard work at training and pull together as a team has led to great successes on and off the court.

Keiyanah Williamson. Keiyanah dominated from the outset, impacting the game with her tenacious and imposing style of attack. Her predatory nature on the defensive resulted in steals and easy scoring opportunities for herself and the team. She had that glint her eye that opposing teams are learning to fear! Keiyanah top scored with an outstanding 16 points, but led our team in so many other intangible ways.

Slow start to the game resulting in being down by 15 points at quarter time. However, this was not the true reflection of the game as over the next 3 quarters Hills 2 only outscored our team by 7 finally going down by 22. We also managed to restrict them to 10 and 8 in the third and final quarters. In the first meeting against Hills we went down by 35 so we managed to improve by 13 which was a great effort by the team.

Lucy played an amazing game scoring 6 points while getting many rebounds and several blocks. Special mention to Lily who was our top scorer with 9 points and was also awesome in defence.

Tough losses always sting, but dropping a winnable game at home is especially hard to take. We came out firing in the first quarter, playing with great intensity and execution, and carried that momentum into halftime with a solid double-digit lead. However, the Cougars returned from the break with a renewed defensive focus and physicality that threw us off our rhythm in the third. We struggled to adjust, lost our composure, and allowed the lead to slip away, entering the final term down by four. To our credit, we responded in the fourth quarter, lifting our effort and matching their intensity. We edged them in the final period by 3 points, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap and secure the win. With four games remaining, three against the current top three teams and one against the bottom-ranked side: the road ahead is demanding. But it’s also an opportunity to test our resolve and sharpen our edge heading into the final stretch.
Next up, we’re back at home to face the Joondalup Wolves. This week’s focus will be on regrouping, learning from our lapses, and preparing to bounce back with the hunger to redeem ourselves.

This week’s Player of the Game goes to Llafton Muller, who delivered an outstanding all-around performance on both ends of the court. Llafton was locked in offensively, shooting an impressive 50% from both inside and beyond the arc, finishing the game with 24 points and 6 assists. His efficiency and decision-making provided a steady offensive presence throughout the match. On the defensive end, Llafton stayed active and disruptive, recording 2 blocks and 3 steals, showing just how impactful he can be across the floor. Poor 3rd quarter was the difference between the two teams. Throughout the game we struggled to make inroads against their zone defence with poor shot selection and minimal ball movement hurting us. To the boys credit they continued to battle strongly against bigger opponents and didn’t let the deficit blow out in the final quarter.

First game back after the break and we got off to another slow start, giving them a 7 point lead. We started the grind to get back in to the game during the 2nd and 3rd quarters and once again we have proven that if we score 20 points we almost always win the quarter. 21-17 & 20-16. The game came down to the wire and with 12 seconds on the clock we ran a play to get a 3 point shot off to try and level the game. The play was drawn up for Chayse and it wasn’t as smooth as it should have been but he made a great play and scored the 3 to level the game. That left us 5 seconds to get a stop and force the game in to overtime. We did everything right and forced a bad shot from behind the backboard on the baseline, unfortunately they got the loose ball and threw it up and it went it just as the siren sounded. We attempted to implement some new triggers to our offense without much success, but I feel that will start getting better in the back half of the season. We also implemented our full court press and that was quite good. Give it another week or 2 and I can see that being a weapon for us.

As I mentioned earlier in the season, I very much looked forward to the second opportunity to play Hills Green, & although we came up short, we reduced the margin by 25 points from our last outing. This result stings a little, as there is no doubt in my mind that we could have won that basketball game on Sunday. A small handful of possessions were the difference between the two Teams & it was quite simply a matter of a little polish here & there that would have changed the outcome. While we were convincingly beaten the first time we battled Raiders Green, Sunday’s narrow margin shows just how far we’ve come. Our hard work, our discipline to play organised basketball, our understanding of defensive concepts & offensive counters made all the difference. We countered their size by being organised & connected. Our improved basketball knowledge was demonstrated on Sunday, that is what matters. We are getting better! In amongst all the take-away’s, the Suns Blue players should believe in their ability. Some losses are difficult, but they offer valuable lessons that help us grow stronger & smarter as a team. At practice we’ll review the positives & improve even more.

This week, Adam & Noah made big contributions, but Player of the Week goes to Reuben for his versatility. Coach James & I spent time figuring out how to use him best against a much taller team, & he delivered as an unlikely small forward. When the whistle blows, Reuben never flinches, he battles hard every week, & on Sunday, he was like a featherweight boxer going the distance. He took some hits, bounced back, & kept fighting. The scoreboard doesn’t care about height, & Reuben doesn’t get scared by his match-up. A coach can’t ask for more. Well done, Reubs, a well-deserved player of the week!

Cold games like Sunday meant a slight adjustment to our preparation, we were ready both defensively and offensively, having 4 players finish in the double figures through our improved defensive philosophy and continued rules-based approach on offence – our movement, ability to finish at the rim and shoot the 3 are starting to come together at the right time.

Georgina Appleby was our difference maker, her hustle diving on 4+ loose balls to retain possession and cause another 3+ jump balls. Players that are willing to fight like this add so much value in our ability to win. Offensively, Georgina made some fantastic reads, cut into space and continued to be aggressive contributing an extra 12 points! Well done!

Despite the cold and wet weather, there was a positive vibe coming into this game. We had a full squad and a belief that this was a winnable matchup. Unfortunately we couldn’t take early opportunities, and as the game progressed, momentum steadily shifted away from us. Credit to the girls for staying mentally composed during what was a physical contest – that is a testament to their emotional growth this season. While the final scoreboard didn’t reflect our potential, we’ll take the lessons, regroup and come back stronger next game.

The final margin isn’t reflective of how competitive the team was across the day, it was a promising team effort from the group, down 5 players and being assisted by Zach Bainbridge & Kano Kudray for the first three and a bit quarters, the team really showed some resilience and determination to be competitive. Given every reason to throw the white flag up and say it’s too hard, the men dug in and gave it their best effort. We as a coaching group are grateful and proud of their performance.

Honorable mentions this week go to: Tait Dalton finished the day with 21 points and worked hard all day against two bigs.
Zach Bainbridge was a lightning plug of energy and effort for us and just does the team things all day.
But our player of the game was Cooper Hewer, by far his best game of the season. Cooper has had to do a lot of work on himself this season and has been challenged in ways the he hasn’t before, he is now starting to see some of the reward for that work in more complete games.

Tough day at the office as we came off a big break missing a bit of fire and fitness. Like a few teams we are also battling injury and we went in with limited bigs against a strong rebounding Suns team. We showed some fight in the third to get the margin back to 6 but ultimately we were out rebounded and out hustled by a hungrier team.
Player of the game
Lucas Cannell is our player of the round. Lucas stepped up to play a big role in the absence of our bigs and never lowered his colours pulling down some big boards in a game where we didn’t get many! Some other stand out performances from Lionel, who carried the scoring load and Lucas A that also played out of position today and had to really work for his 10 points

Coaches notes
This week despite the loss the boys played a better game than the last few weeks. They never gave up and played through Till the end. For majority of the game the ball movement was good. Our defence was good in patches.
