Players of the Round:
Alexia Pang (U14 Girls Team 2) – Player of the game goes to Lexi Pang, who led the scoring with 13 points and made a huge impact all over the court. She consistently gives 100% every play, brings great intensity, and was a real nuisance on defence. On top of that, her smart decision-making helped set the tone for the team throughout the game. Great job Lexi!
Tane Broadwith (U12 Boys Team 1) – Tane has been nominated as Player of the Round for his outstanding effort in stepping up and embracing an unfamiliar role. Slotting straight into the starting lineup, he made an immediate impact and showed great composure and adaptability. His energy and effort were a real spark for the team, particularly in the first quarter where we got off to a strong start. Tane’s intensity set the tone early and lifted those around him, demonstrating exactly the kind of team-first attitude we value. A well-deserved nomination for a performance built on effort, energy, and willingness to step up when it mattered most.

Loss against Mandurah Magic (15 – 20)
Coaches notes
This was a tough game with missing 3 key players. There were 5 out of 7 girls who
played their first wabl game this week. Congratulations girls! What an achievement. This game was tough but the girls put up a solid fight until the very end! We are very proud of the way that they played. On offence and defence. Our score doesn’t reflect the game we played. Despite having less subs the girls still put on immense pressure to the other team & we’re able to keep the Mandurah team within 5 points with them having a full team. With things to work on, i am excited to watch them grow across the Wabl season.
Great work girls, you should be very proud of the game you played. We’ll get them next time!
Player of the game
Adley – Adley was a strong leader on both sides of the court. She set the tone for the game and the girls lifted around her. With 8 of our 15 points, Adley not only score points for us, she worked hard rebounds, blocks, needed steals & assists, setting up her teammates very well. All rounder, including 4 fouls in the third quarter! We sent Adley on with the task of applying pressure without any risk of fouling and she smashed it! Great work Adley, we are very proud of you!

Coaches notes
I can proudly say that it was an honour to coach this team in their first WABL appearance, and coming away with a win was an added bonus. Our focus this season is definitely on development and fundamentals, but there was no escaping the energy in the post-game. The girl’s pre-game was disciplined and strong, and they continued with this mindset into the game. Challenges were thrown, but the girls responded well, keeping to our game plan and style of play that we want as a team. A standout for me was noticing significant growth in both our defensive and offensive games, putting into practice the things that we have been working on tirelessly at training. Well done girls!
Player of the game
Isabella (Bella) Guppy is our player of the round. She ran hard all game, working to help out her team mates both defensively (and area of her game which has been a focus of ours) and in offence (scoring 8 points herself). She took onboard all feedback with positive intent and showed grit and determination for all four quarters. Well done Bella!

We were so proud of our girls this week in their very first WABL game! Facing a much taller team, they showed incredible determination with strong defence and great offence. Rebounds were tough against the height, but the effort and teamwork never dropped. Their communication on the court and support for each other really stood out, showing the kind of team culture they’re building. Every player contributed, and it was fantastic to see their confidence grow as the game went on. We can’t wait to watch these girls keep improving, growing stronger, and developing as the season goes on. The future is bright!
Player of the game
Queen of the Court this week goes to Nadia
Her aggressive defence was outstanding—coming up with key steals and pushing the ball up the court with confidence. She also did a great job inbounding and making smart passes to keep the play moving. Nadia fouled out near the end, but her hustle never dropped. She chased every ball and fought hard for every turnover. Congratulations, Nadia, on being Player of the Game!

Coaches notes
Despite the final score, there were plenty of positives to take out of this game. With only eight players available, the effort, intensity, and energy shown by the group was outstanding from start to finish. The team competed strongly, keeping the game tight and competitive up until halftime, which is a great reflection of their resilience and commitment.
A major takeaway was the way several players stepped up and embraced roles they don’t usually play. That willingness to adapt and contribute wherever needed highlights strong team character and growth. Most importantly, the overall team effort stood out—everyone worked hard for each other, played with energy, and stayed engaged throughout.
This performance sets a solid foundation moving forward, showing what the group is capable of when they bring effort, teamwork, and a next-man-up mentality and that we can compete with any team we come up against.

The boys had a cracking start to the season, a few special mentions! Darcy has worked so hard in the pre season and it really shows his work under the basket has come so far and he had a cracking game. Jax and Kevin were both so switch on with defence always trapping and putting pressure on the ball for turnovers.
Player of the game
My player of the game was Stephen, he was such a reliable and steady presence when we needed it most, he never got flustered and always put the team first in all our plays and for that he was my player of the game!

Coaches notes
Our defence was a highlight, and we ended up with the same number of possessions as Willetton but our turnover rate of 44% unfortunately resulted in 28 less FG attempts, we need to take better care of the basketball in general. but overall, we had enough good looks offensively, just nerves got the better of us in a tough division shooting only 27% for the game at the rim on 48 attempts needs to improve. Eunice was a great protector and defensive giant finishing with 6 points 20 rebounds and 6 blocks, Mariska chipped in offensively with 11pts.
Player of the game
Sophie Perazzo was the standout for me this week 12pts to lead us offensively, and offering 6 rebounds 5 steals and 1 block to go along with that, but it was her leadership and never die attitude that mattered most to coach this week, she really takes it personal at all times, up or down, she puts her body on the line for her team, time and time again… She makes it impossible to have her off the court, well done Soph.

It was a great effort from the team this weekend, with everyone contributing well across the game. We had a slow start, but after halftime we lifted our intensity, putting together a strong scoring run backed by solid defensive stops to pull away. It was great to see the girls playing as a team and executing the skills and structures we’ve been working on in training. We were super stoked to get a round 1 win and can’t wait to add another this weekend!

The girls applied immense pressure from the get go, forcing turnovers to get a 16-0 lead at quarter time. Their defensive structure that we have been focusing on was strong the whole game as well as their effort on both sides of the floor. Although they did fatigue towards the end, they never stopped pushing themselves and giving their all until the end of the game.

Coach: Adrian Mok
Won against Lakeside Lightning (70 – 39)
Coaches notes
After a slow defensive start, allowing 28 points in the first half, the boys lifted their intensity after the break and restricted Lakeside to just 11 second-half points. Offensively, it was great to see the ball being shared and players consistently finding open teammates. The team finished 31/64 from the field and recorded an impressive 23 assists. It was also a strong effort on the boards, with every player contributing at least one rebound. The team total of 47 rebounds—including 18 offensive boards—highlights a fantastic collective effort.
There are still areas to improve, with 25 turnovers and 62% shooting from the free throw line, but overall it was a very positive start to the season. It was also great to see strong support from families, not just cheering for their own child but for the entire team—something that’s always appreciated as a coach.
Notable mentions this week go to two of our defensive anchors: Jason Chizelunwa: 16 points (7/13 FG), 5 rebounds, 4 steals, and 4 blocks. Issac Data: 12 points (6/11 FG), 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 7 steals.
Player of the game
Nathanael Hauraki brought great energy from the opening tip, attacking every loose ball and rebound while maintaining intensity throughout the entire game. It’s been fantastic to see his hard work during the preseason pay off. After coming to me a couple of weeks ago to put in extra time on his shooting, Nathanael delivered an outstanding performance—going 11/17 from the field, including 2/3 from beyond the arc. It’s a great example that when you put in the work, the results will follow. He finished with an impressive double-double of 25 points and 13 rebounds.

Coach: Ben Marks
Loss against Perry Lakes Hawks (41 – 76)
Coaches notes
The game was an even contest in the first half with both teams having small runs. Our transition game was impressive, and we were able to score quite freely. The third quarter saw our opponents get a run on us and open a double-digit lead. A small run at the end of the third saw us close the gap to within striking distance. Unfortunately, we came out flat in the fourth quarter turning the ball over on several occasions, allowing our opponents a 28-6 fourth quarter including 16 points in a row. The final scoreline did not reflect the competitiveness of the game, which was disappointing. Some of the positives we can take from the game was our balanced scoring attack and willingness to, at times, kick the ball to the easiest scoring option in transition and for a large part of the game our rebounding intensity match our opponents, which was great to see. Our ability to keep to our game plan and decision make under pressure needs to improve as does our ball movement in the half court offensive sets. Resilience will be key to our season, as will trusting one another and the team game plan that we put into place at practice. It’s only 1 game in and with 50% bottom-age players, there is major room for improvement. Onward and upward!
Player of the game
There were many contributors that stood out on the day- Lucas was reliable with his passing and finished at a high rate. Ashton was relentless on the boards and attacked the basket, Fletcher continued to be a great rim protector and Kirath was able to push the ball up the court effectively. The player of the round this week goes to Emmanuel, who in his first game of WABL for 2 years rebounded well and made the most of his time on the court, being efficient on offense and was an improved defender at the basket. Well done Emmanuel!

Loss against East Perth Eagles (32 – 58)
Coaches notes
We were all excited to finally start the season after a long buildup, and the boys showed some nerves early. We faced a team with a clear size advantage, and the Eagles hurt us on the boards, getting second chances and put backs that put us behind from the start. Our rebounding improved as the game went on with everyone boxing out, but we need to keep developing this area to finish defensive possessions.
The boys hung with East Perth for most of the game, with the third quarter being our best. We showed great patience on offense, but their disciplined defensive structure made it tough to get into the paint. We missed some chances, and if we can get our eyes up on the drive, we’ll create easier looks for team mates.
Our transition offense also struggled, with East Perth getting back in D quickly and a bit of over-dribbling from us. When we moved the ball early, we looked strong. With the game out of reach late, our shot selection slipped and the scoreboard blew out.
There were plenty of positives—patience on offense, energy from the bench and improved rebounding. East Perth showed the level we need to reach, and now it’s up to the boys to push themselves to get there.
Player of the game
I’m happy to say this was a well-balanced team effort with contributions from all 10 players. Our player of the game this week was Theo Birks. Theo as always, was all over the court for us being the hardest worker on defense, and keeping us in touch on the scoreboard. Special mentions to Liam James-Majeks and Chase McDonald making an impact in their first full games for the Suns.

Loss against Rockingham Flames (48 – 49)
Coaches notes
The team was keen to get the season underway, it was nice to be on our home court. Game was close from start to finish, neither team could build a lead. It was good to see how we look in a full WABL game. We have lots to work on, but we have a good foundation. I thought we had the stronger team, and we need to work harder to get more from ourselves. Defensively we covered our players, but we lacked the intensity to really shut down their offence and we were average with rebounding. Offensively we had good moments of both ball & player movement. Followed quickly by poor movement and shot selection. The game demonstrated attention to detail and full game engagement can win you the game.
Player of the Game
Our player of the game was Emmanuel Osei-Bonsu with a solid 19 point game from smart offense and rebounding. Emmanuel’s improvement from 6 months ago has been impressive.

Loss against Joondalup Wolves (43 – 63)
Coaches notes
While it was a tough result for our first game, there were plenty of positive signs, particularly in the first half where we competed well and showed good discipline defensively. We were able to make Wolves uncomfortable at times and created some good looks offensively when we moved the ball and played with purpose. We saw glimpses of the team we can be when we are at our best.
The main lesson this week is making sure our hard work on defense turns into extra possessions for our team. We defended well enough to force misses, but allowed too many extra opportunities by not securing the rebound. It is hard to win when you lose the possession battle. This week gives us a clear focus. Rebounding needs to be a team responsibility, and we need to keep building our ability to stay composed with the ball under pressure.
Player of the Game
This week’s player of the game goes to Cara Woodgate. Cara gave us a real spark early in the game. She spaced the floor well, was ready when the ball found her, and knocked down both of her 3 point attempts with confidence. She finished as our leading scorer with 10 points, while consistently putting pressure on the defense by attacking gaps with intent and getting herself to the free throw line. In a game where offense was hard to generate, Cara’s ability to create pressure, make quick decisions, and keep the defense honest stood out.

Won against Cockburn Cougars (67 – 41)
Coaches notes
After a slow start, our 16 girls picked up the defensive intensity in the third quarter, sparking a run that sealed the deal. We dominated the full-court game, generating most of our offense from transition. All players contributed in what was a strong round 1 showing.
At this early stage of the season, the bones of a cohesive team are emerging. We will discuss our performance over the week and consider ways we can lean into our strengths and apply our principles of play to come out even stronger in round 2 when we take on the Wolves in Joondalup.
Player of the game
Leah Darroch – Leah was the catalyst for our offensive run that broke the game open. With her athletic prowess and ability to read the ball, Leah pounced on passes, turning over the Cougars and igniting our fast-break offense. Leah’s defensive intensity and smart play set the standard for her teammates. She dropped a handy 9 points but contributed in ways that don’t show up on the stat sheet. Amazing game, Leah!

As a new team with only a few training sessions under our belts, I was really pleased with the overall team effort. The girls responded well to our coaching and were able to come away with a strong win to start the season.
We will continue to build cohesion and understanding as a group, while also honing our skills and developing our connections on court. It was particularly encouraging given that several players are new to the team, and for some, this was their first ever WABL game. We’ll look to keep working together and build on what was a very positive opening performance.
Player of the game
Ruva Ryburn. Her commitment was outstanding right across the floor in both offence and defence. Her ability to read the play and intercept the ball was a real standout, and her work on the boards with strong rebounding efforts made her a clear choice for player of the game.

First game of the season always interesting to see if we’ve done enough in the preseason! Won against Southwest Slammers (88 – 52)
Coaches notes
The team opened the game strongly, scoring the first 9 unanswered points. However, we became overly reliant on perimeter shooting, allowing the opposition to recover and level the score at 14–14 by the end of the first quarter. Following an adjustment to our offensive approach, we shifted focus to attacking the basket, which led to more consistent scoring opportunities and improved efficiency. This change in approach allowed us to build momentum and gradually extend our lead for the remainder of the game.
This was a well-rounded team performance, with all players contributing positively. Austin capitalised on strong team play to lead the scoring with 24 points. Matthew and Alijah each added 12 points, while Chad contributed 11 and Kyan finished with 9.
Player of the game
Selecting a player of the game this week was a difficult decision given the number of strong performances across the team. Matthew Berkhout earns the award for his outstanding defensive effort throughout the game, combined with his composure and focus on the offensive end. Special mentions go to Austin, who did an excellent job finishing team plays and led all scorers, and to Alijah who delivered a well-rounded performance with solid contributions on both ends of the court.

Player of the game
Artin Darvish Ghane, with a strong 28pts. There was no stopping Artin getting the bucket he wanted, with some tough finishes at the ring either off the rebound or drive added in with some flashy step back threes he really made a difference for the team.

Won against Mandurah Magic (104 – 84)
Coaches notes
First quarter was an arm wrestle with Mandurah sitting in a zone for most of the game and both team finding their rythym on both ends of the floor.
2nd quarter the boys really excelled in Trans O, we saw all of the foundations we have been laying really highlighted and jumped out to a 14 point lead at half time. 3rd quarter our discipline fell away and we allowed Mandurah to win the quarter and reduce our lead to 5 and had all the momentum going into the final quarter.
The men dug in and started to wrestle that momentum back winning the fourth quarter 31-16 and the game by 20 points.
A really pleasing result to see the resilience of this group band together and take the result.
Player of the game
We had a number of candidates for player of the round:
Cooper Hewer with a 30 point game, Anthony Flores who was very influential in the fourth and finished with 12 points or Odin Amundsen who was a workhorse on both ends of the floor and finished with 18 points.
But this weeks player of the round goes to Jackson McClure, he was everywhere this week on both ends of the floor and worked hard all day.

Our full-court man-to-man denial defence set the tone. The discipline in consistently getting a hand in the passing lanes disrupted their flow and generated high-pressure possessions. That pressure translated directly into turnovers, which we converted efficiently into transition offence. The result was not just points, but real momentum and growing confidence across the group. The energy carried through the entire team, reflected in the fact that everyone got on the scoreboard and contributed offensively.

Coach: Doug Bainbridge
Won against Willeton Tigers (103 – 68)
Coaches notes
A strong and encouraging start to the season for our young men, who opened their campaign with a committed team performance built on pressure, connection, and effort.
From the opening minutes, the group set the tone defensively with consistent full‑court pressure, disrupting the opposition’s rhythm and forcing turnovers through teamwork rather than gambling. That defensive intent flowed into the offensive end, where the team shared the ball well, maintained good spacing, and consistently looked to attack the paint to create quality scoring opportunities.
Just as importantly for an early‑season game, the players stayed composed across four quarters, continuing to compete and support one another as the game ebbed and flowed. The willingness to trust the system, stay connected defensively, and keep building positive habits stood out.
While there is plenty still to sharpen — as there always is early in the year — this was a strong foundation performance and a positive sign of the group’s growth. A proud first outing and a great platform to continue building on as the season progresses.
Player of the game
A well‑deserved Player of the Round performance from Kieran, whose impact was felt at both ends of the floor. Kieran showed great composure, made strong decisions with the ball, and consistently influenced the game in key moments. Kieran finished with 26 points, 8 rebounds (6 offensive!) 5 steals and 3 assists with only 1 turnover. A complete performance
Special mention also to Thomas J, who set the tone defensively with pressure and intensity from the outset, and Lukah, whose presence around the rim and commitment on the boards (7 rebounds) helped the team finish important defensive possessions.
A great example of individual impact within a team‑first performance.

Coaches notes
Unlucky against Senators, we put up a great fight but just lost it in the end. Some key highlights from our game was, Taj Medlar scoring 29 pts and Tobie Freeth playing outstanding defense. Free throws was a small issue that will be a massive improvement over the next coming training sessions as Warwick Senators put up 13 fouls in the first quarter, an the free throws just weren’t sitting right with us. The team was good under the pressure and proceeded to play good basketball.

Won against Joondalup Wolves (103 – 77)
Coaches Notes
We travelled to Joondalup Arena to face a Wolves (team 3) that we have faced previously in a friendly over a month ago. We had 4 debutants all top agers in Xavier Parsons, Fei and Xiang Li, and James Polinelli making their first WABL appearance and all 4 performed tremendously for their first time in a 40min fully timed game.
We came out a bit slow with wolves jumping us out 6-0 lead before we started to settle down a bit with Deacon Matthews leading the way on both ends of the court with his intensity, something which will be expected of him every week. The game really game to light once Omid was inserted off the bench, from there it was pretty much a constant flow of tough 1 on 1 defense with plenty of individual steals to open the game wide up to a 26pt lead at the half. The game blew out to 30+ lead before we started to play some loose basketball, overall we got the job done and nice to get a W on the board.
Player of the game
Omid Hussaini came off the bench and could easily have started, but he understood from the get go why I needed him on the bench first.
He finished with an impressive 17 pts (top score) on 60.5% FG along with 5 assist 8 steals and 6 rebounds. That is an impressive statline for what I consider a traditional point guard who will understand how make his team mates get involved as well as being a threat. Super coachable, and those 8 steals were just impressive.

Coach: Charlie Smart
Won against Perry Lakes Hawks (88 – 67)
Coaches Notes
The first game of the 2026 season saw us take on Perry Lakes Hawks at Bendat. After a tentative start, the team settled in, applying good defensive pressure that set the tone for the remainder of the game. A quiet third quarter allowed Hawks to chip away at our lead, but the team responded well and finished the game strongly. Our bench energy was electric throughout spurring each on no matter who was on or off the court, which is a testament to the incredible group we have.
A full team effort with every player contributing whether on the scoreboard or defensively. They took on feedback positively and showed determination to start the season with a win. Definitely plenty to build on, but also so many exciting positives to take forward.
Player of the game
Both Grace and Charlie really stepped up, setting the expectation for how this season needs to be consistently played, but our “Player of the Game” goes to Skye. After a quiet start Skye seemed to shift gears. Hot shooting hands saw her confidence up and finish with an impressive 34 points. So good to see Skye locking in defensively, disrupting the Hawks ball movement by blocking several midcourt passes, forcing turnovers, and coming away with multiple steals. Offensively, she didn’t just rely on her perimeter shot, Skye read the defence well, attacked the lane with confidence, and secured several and 1 opportunities.
Well done to all teams and we look forward to round 2!
