Dear KDBA Members,
“The true measure of our success is what we leave behind for others to build upon.” – John Wooden
This wisdom resonates deeply with me as I think about community organisations like KDBA. We don’t just manage them for today – we’re stewards, responsible for nurturing and strengthening them for the next generation of players, families, and leaders. We aim to build something lasting, leave organisations in better states than which we found them, and then pass them onto others so that they continue to thrive long after our time has passed.
I am incredibly proud of the past 5 years during which I have had the privilege of serving as the President of the Eastern Suns. We have established a clear mission, vision and strategy for the Eastern Suns. Created a strong, vibrant brand and aligned around a set of values that guide our decisions and actions. Our domestic competition is thriving, with record levels of beginner, female and all-abilities participation. Our WABL program is booming, and our NBL1 program stands at the cusp of an exciting season fuelled by high-profile signings. Recently, we have made great strides in our advocacy work to obtain funding for the court expansion at Ray Owen Sports Centre that we so desperately need. Finally, we now have our first CEO in place, supported by a highly professional and experienced staff to give you, our members, the best basketball experience we can.
Having served as your President since 2020, it is now time for this season of my life to pass so that a new season can begin – with more time for my family, my business and other passions. To that end, I formally stepped down from the Presidency at last night’s Management Committee meeting.
I’m pleased to announce that the Management Committee has appointed Jarod Avila as Acting President through to the upcoming AGM (scheduled for 7 May), at which point you will elect a new President for the next two years. Jarod has been involved at KDBA as a player, coach, team manager and volunteer as far back as the late 1980s and has served on the Committee for the past 2.5 years. Outside of basketball, Jarod is an executive at HBF, experience that he frequently draws upon for the benefit of our Club. He is passionate about basketball, the Eastern Suns and our community, and he will serve KDBA well.
While I may be stepping down as President, know that I will always bleed orange and black. The Suns are more than just a club – we’re a family, and I’m grateful for having had the privilege to serve as your President.
Thank you for your trust, support, and commitment to making KDBA what it is today.
#FireUp #RiseTogether
Best regards,
Scott Parker
