The Bendigo Bank Eastern Suns wrapped up their 2025 home campaign in front of a loud and loyal crowd at Ray Owen Sports Centre on Thursday night. In what was the first of two games in this weekend’s Round 16 doubleheader, both teams faced the Lakeside Lightning under the bright lights of NBL1 West action.

While the night brought mixed results on the scoreboard, it was another massive showing from our Women’s team — securing back-to-back wins and finishing their home slate on a high. The Men’s side, despite an electric start, couldn’t maintain momentum in the second half against a clinical Lightning unit.

Game 1: Eastern Suns v Lakeside Lightning (Women)
Ray Owen Sports Centre | July 17, 2025 | 6:30 PM
Final Score: Suns 85 – Lightning 71

Our Women continued their late-season resurgence with a confident and complete performance against the Lightning, leading at every break and asserting dominance at both ends of the court.

Key Performers:

  • Karly Murphy was once again at her elite best, pouring in 35 points to go with 13 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal in a commanding display.
  • Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant continued her consistent all-round impact with 22 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals and a block.
  • Yume Knoll added a double-double of her own with 10 points, 13 boards, and strong interior presence throughout the night.

Game 2: Eastern Suns v Lakeside Lightning (Men)
Ray Owen Sports Centre | July 17, 2025 | 8:30 PM
Final Score: Suns 83 – Lightning 114

The Men’s team started with fire, racing to a 32-point first quarter and matching Lakeside bucket for bucket. However, a huge second period from the visitors flipped the momentum, and the Suns were unable to recover, struggling to find offensive rhythm in the final term.

Key Performers:

  • Marshall Nelson led the way again, contributing 27 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists and a steal in a gritty effort.
  • Marley Sam was a spark off the bench with 22 points, 4 rebounds, and a pair of steals
  • Randy Bell added 17 points and a couple of key plays early, but foul trouble and Lakeside’s defensive pressure kept him in check late.
