Suns Battle in Cockburn

The Eastern Suns travelled to Wally Hagan Stadium on Saturday night to take on the Cockburn Cougars, with both teams facing one of the competition’s toughest challenges.

Despite coming away without a win, the women pushed the reigning NBL1 West champions until the closing minutes, while the men’s side welcomed back a familiar face as Jono Diaz made his return to the court in Eastern Suns colours.

WOMEN

The Suns women produced one of their strongest performances of the season, going down 80–92 after matching the reigning champions for much of the contest.

After a competitive opening quarter, the Suns edged in front heading into halftime before both teams traded baskets throughout the third term. With the game still within reach entering the final quarter, the Cougars found another gear in the closing minutes to pull away and secure the victory.

Alyssa Bowen led the Suns offensively with 20 points while adding 5 rebounds and 2 assists in another composed performance.

Trista Hull continued her outstanding season with a dominant double-double, collecting 12 points and 18 rebounds to go with 4 assists, 4 steals and 2 blocks in a remarkable all-round display.

Denae Civich provided valuable scoring with 14 points, while Gabriela Bronson added 12 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists.

Although the result didn’t fall their way, the Suns proved they can match it with the competition’s benchmark, taking the reigning champions deep into the contest.

MEN

The Suns men fell 82–121 to a red-hot Cockburn outfit that capitalised on an explosive second quarter to take control of the game.

Despite a competitive opening period, the Cougars found their rhythm offensively and built a significant halftime advantage before maintaining that momentum throughout the second half.

Jesse Pollock led the Suns with 18 points, continuing his strong shooting form.

Marley Sam added 17 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals, while Joe Cook-Green contributed 12 points and 5 assists.

The night also marked a welcome return for Jono Diaz, who pulled on the Suns jersey once again after rejoining the club.

While the results didn’t go the Suns’ way, there were plenty of positives to take from the weekend. With finals approaching, both teams will take valuable lessons from the weekend as they prepare for the challenges ahead.
