The Eastern Suns 2026 NBL1 West season tipped off on Friday night at home, with a high-energy Round 1 clash against the Lakeside Lightning delivering a split result across the two games.
WOMEN
The Suns women faced a tough opening night challenge, falling 63–90 to the Lakeside line-up.
Despite the result, there were some standout individual performances that set the tone for the season ahead—none more impressive than Gabriela Bronson, who delivered an outstanding all-around performance with 21 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists and 4 steals. Falling just shy of a triple-double, Bronson’s impact was felt across every facet of the game.
Ella Averill also provided a strong presence, finishing with 12 points and 5 rebounds, while continuing to compete hard on both ends of the floor. Co-captain Emma Strelein contributed across the board with 8 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.
MEN
The Suns men opened their 2026 campaign in style, securing a hard-fought 92–87 victory in a thrilling contest.
The offensive load was shared, with Joe Cook-Green and Marley Sam leading the way with 22 points apiece. Cook-Green controlled the tempo superbly, adding 7 assists, while Sam delivered a well-rounded performance with 5 assists and 3 steals, impacting both ends of the floor.
Terrandus Smith made his presence felt with 15 points, 5 rebounds and 3 steals, providing energy and defensive pressure throughout the night. On the boards, Jordan Simpson was dominant, pulling down 11 rebounds to go along with his 7 points.
