The Eastern Suns are excited to welcome the $20 million commitment from Adam Hort, the WA Liberals’ candidate for Kalamunda, and the Liberal Party to expand the Ray Owen Sports Centre ahead of this year’s State Election. This investment will deliver four new indoor basketball and netball courts, significantly boosting the sporting infrastructure available to our growing basketball community.
The announcement was made on Tuesday, 17 February at Ray Owen Sports Centre by the leader of the Western Australian Liberal Party, Libby Mettam MLA, Adam Hort – Liberal for Kalamunda, and George Tilbury – Liberal for Forrestfield.
With participation in basketball at an all-time high, local players, teams, and families have long felt the strain of limited access to courts. The proposed funding will enable upgrades that will provide much-needed space for athletes to train, compete, and thrive in the sports they love.
In his announcement via social-media, Adam Hort emphasised the importance of this investment for grassroots sport, ensuring that more children have access to quality facilities close to home. “This is a much-needed upgrade for our growing community—giving local kids more opportunities to play, train, and compete in the sports they love. With participation in basketball and netball booming, many kids are missing out because the current facilities haven’t kept up. This investment will support grassroots sport, local clubs, and ensure more families can access quality facilities close to home.”
The Eastern Suns, alongside the City of Kalamunda and Kalamunda & Districts Netball Association (KDNA), have been strong advocates for the expansion of Ray Owen Sports Centre. The demand for more courts has been evident for years, and this election commitment represents a significant step forward in addressing the needs of local athletes and clubs.
