Players of the Round:
Sarah Aird (U14 Girls) – Sarah was outstanding this week. She brought energy and toughness on both ends of the floor. Whether it was finishing inside, crashing the boards, or hustling back in defensive transition, she was everywhere. Just one rebound short of a double-double, she was a constant presence and influence throughout the game. This was one of her best all-round performances. Brilliant effort, Sarah!
Cal Kwe (U16 Boys) – Another great game from Cal this week, stepping up and contributing in all areas. Love your work ethic and attitude, keep it up!! Apart from dropping a WABL career high of 14 points, he was everywhere on defense with multiple steals and blocks.

We started slow again this week, by the time we found our rhythm, it was a little too late. The girls did well to bring the scores back! We are starting to look more developed now, running our offensive plays without being asked over and over. Right now, as a very young team, we’re still learning, the wins will come!!

Coaches notes
We had a much better effort this week following last week’s disappointing game. The boys were locked in on defense and our teamwork returned. We ran into a half-court trap again but made some progress solving it. It still cost us some turnovers but we seem to be progressing and learning.
Player of the game
There are two players of the game this week. Aiden Williams got his first start of the season and did a great job. Although he did not hit the scoreboard, his defense, rebounding and hustle efforts more than made up for it. Preston Handgraaf is our second player of the game this week as he continues his amazing start to the year. Preston’s scoring has been incredible this season, whether he is out running for fast breaks or hitting pull up threes, he has been hot so far. He is currently the 5th leading scorer in Championship division and leads the division with eight made threes. Congratulations to Aiden and Preston this week.

Won against Rockingham Flames (62 – 51)
Coaches notes
The boys had a great bounce-back win a week after being taught a lesson in effort. Undermanned, and undersized, we started poorly, conceding 8 quick points. The Flames pressed hard and we struggled to inbound the ball early. However, the Suns boys weathered the early storm, adjusted well, finding ways to advance the ball with our captain this week, Zarene Samson steadying the ship and Harry Allen getting us going offensively early.
After the opening, the boys did a great job staying disciplined on D putting in a real four quarter effort in our half-court structure for the first time all season. The boys remained focused defensively, mostly fighting the urge to gamble for steals, beating their man to the spot and locking down the paint with tough, physical help defense in the second half, Malachi Daley leading the way. Several boys filled unfamiliar roles due to a couple of key outs, and they were all up to the task.
Thanks to some fortunate shot-making and a four quarter defensive effort we were able to leave Rockingham victorious. The boys are being challenged each week by the coaches to step up their intensity and focus, with our team values of effort, positivity and teamwork proving key to our on-court success as a team.
Player of the game
Honourable mentions to Theo Birks playing above his size battling the Flames bigs, Harry Allen, improving his defensive effort weekly to go with his consistent offensive punch, Malachi Daley with a gritty defensive effort and Lennox Greene, a stalwart in the paint, catching fire from beyond the arc this week.
This week’s player of the week is Jack Tucker. Jack’s continued hard work and focus at training is starting to show on the court, with his defensive motor continuing to improve. With Rockingham threatening to make a comeback, Jack lit up Mike Barnett stadium with an offensive run for the ages putting up 10 points in the third quarter, giving everything he had in a gutsy effort.

Loss against Lakeside Lightning (52 – 54)
Coaches notes
This was a great battle, back & forth the whole game! The boys had some great looks and are really starting to trust each other and their shots shooting our highest scoring game. The first quarter had us getting our bearings right but thanks to Hugh’s strong start with multiple steals & rebounds it was 10-8. The second we really took it to Lakeside causing them to play aggressive putting themselves in foul trouble while our boys focused on attacking the basket. A lot of our shots were from rebounds & putbacks especially from Jaxon, also Isaac’s impressive positioning and decision making helped close out the half with a lead! The 3rd we continued giving all Lakeside could handle with Hunter lacing back to back 3’s & a few well spent fouls early on from Max. Unfortunately a few carries were unnoticed, which cost us dearly, finishing on a low note. The 4th continued similar with a potential and 1 reduced to base line possession & some uncalled contact on shots, the score doesn’t show it but we feel like we won the game. We worked hard we played clean and once again did our best to persevere. Each week our boys are improving in every aspect of the game playing in a team dynamic.
Player of the game
Jaxon Simmons
Its easy to overlook Jaxon’s efforts each week as he’s one of the most consistent players but its hard to look past 17 rebounds and 20 points, his understanding of the game continues to grow and he leads by example. if he’s not on the court he’s on the bench pushing his teammates and that goes a long way, this game he knew where to be and what to do and could not be stopped with his rebounds and putbacks, congratulations on your double double, solid effort mate!!

Won against East Perth Eagles (45 – 26)
Coaches notes
This one was messy. We didn’t play to our usual standard and lacked the focus and discipline we’ve shown in recent weeks, but we still found a way to win. The game was physical, scrappy, and full of missed chances, but we stayed together and got it done through effort and resilience.
Our defense carried us. We made life tough for Eagles all game, forcing 29 turnovers and holding them to just 26 points. Offensively, it was a grind. We missed open looks, struggled from the free throw line, and couldn’t buy one from deep. But we stayed aggressive, won the rebounding battle, and created enough extra opportunities to stay in control.
It wasn’t polished, but it showed that even when we’re off, we can dig in, trust each other, and find a way. That’s growth.

Cara came close to her own double-double with a massive 17 rebounds and a huge presence in the paint. Steph was everywhere – 7 points, 7 assists, 6 steals – just doing Steph things and keeping us steady.

Coaches notes
This week we came up against the Warwick Senators, who were level with us on the ladder. After last week’s second-half fade-out, the girls were determined to show they could play four strong quarters — and they certainly delivered.
We started Q1 with great intensity, scoring the first five points and setting the early tone. Warwick responded well, capitalising on a few lapses in judgement under pressure to take a narrow lead into the break.
Q2 began just as brightly, with us putting on the first eight points. Again, Warwick fought back, but this time we dug deep and held our nerve to head into half-time up by a point.
The third quarter turned into a real arm wrestle. Every time we gained a small edge, they came back, but the girls held firm and maintained a three-point lead heading into the final term.
Q4 was a battle of effort and defense. Both teams were tired, but our girls showed resilience, heart, and teamwork — holding Warwick to just two points for the quarter.
Our goal was simple: outwork the opposition and apply constant scoreboard pressure — and the girls executed both with great discipline and effort.
A fantastic, hard-earned win. Couldn’t be prouder of this group!
Player of the game
Amelia Soka led from the front with a brilliant all-round performance. Defensively, she was a standout with key blocks and stops, while also creating scoring chances for her teammates and showing strong on-court leadership. Her resilience and effort through fatigue were crucial in securing the win. Special mentions: Abby Duggan was outstanding, top scoring with 11 points and showing composure beyond her years. Eliza Eaton continued her solid form from last week, while Eliza Prevett and Ruby Chang added valuable points. Everyone contributed in what was a true team performance.

Coaches notes
This week was always going to be big ask of the girls but to their credit they fought through and didn’t drop their heads. Whilst we moved the ball well to break the pressure Perry Lakes brought, the girls defended well. We just didn’t have the finish around the basket with the intensity put on us. Ultimately we are very proud of the girls and how well they did, while we didn’t get the win, the score doesn’t accurately reflect the game. We look forward to continue watching these girls improve and the difference when we match up again.
Player of the game
Sophie. Sophie has come on really nicely this season. We have challenged her to play a true tall role and watching her adapt to this has been nothing short of a pleasure. She was strong against a tall Perry Lakes and rebounded and boxed out strong and made great choices around the ring. Keep it up Sophie

Coaches notes
This week was not one of our best performances. An interrupted week of sickness and injury showed out on the court in the second half. The first half and beginning of the third quarter was an even affair and it looked as though we would be in for another close one. Unfortunately, we did not look after the ball well and multiple turnovers turned into easy baskets at the rim for our opponents in the rest of the third and into the fourth quarter. A 31-51 second half means we will be working on our defense and playing under pressure at training this week.
Some of the positives out of the game were our ability to drive, draw defense and hit the open man for some easy buckets and we showed some glimpses of the potent transition team we could be as the season draws on. Jason was big for us inside and when we looked for him, he scored with ease around the basket. The boys need to hold their heads high as they always give effort and energy on the floor, and this will help us moving into the second half of the season.
Player of the game
Player of the round this week was a tough choice once again with many worthy contributors whether on the scoreboard or in other facets of the game. Ultimately, I have gone with Jason this week as his scoring and pressure on the offensive rebounds kept us in the contest. Well done, Jason.

Who are we as a team? One of the goals was not to rely on just 2 players but to create a weapon of players. The other was it starts with our defense. The type of defense that we don’t see enough of, that is right up on ball, on the player and wall up every time in the key.
Our first qrt was A+, we kept tigers to 2pts, D- we only scored 3 ourselves on 1 of 15 FG
2nd qrt the A+ we kept tigers to 2pts, and we did a great job. 15 points going into half time with an 18-4 lead.
Anytime you keep an opponent to 2pts in a fully time 8min qrt TWICE, that’s a feat. Well done to the entire squad for their defensive pressure and to rotate and double when we needed to on selected players.
Offensively, we drifted from our game plan early on, but still managed to find our rhythm and build a solid 18pt lead heading into the final 2-3 minutes, before taking our foot off the gas.
After 6 rounds, it’s important to acknowledge the amazing parents on the sidelines who have consistently supported the players and shown great composure around the calls. A special thanks to Eusaint and Mark for providing a calm balance to my intensity, and to Marrie for keeping me honest and grounded when I need it. It’s such a wonderful core group and both the boys and I are so grateful for this.
Player of the game
Austin – a unique player of the game nomination, this on is actually shared across two games. Christian had back to back games where he had to face guard and shut down 2 players named Cruz and Kruze. He did an amazing job last week and doubled downed this week keeping their most dynamic player to ZERO points! If you look at Christians stats you’ll see 0 pts, 0 reb, 0 assists, 0 Steals & 0 Blocks .. but what you don’t see is Kruze had 0 pts and was completely shut down all game. That kind of defensive effort doesn’t show up on paper, but it made a massive impact. He thoroughly deserves Player of the Game for two straight weeks of elite lockdown defense. Austin with his first double-double of the season has narrowly edged out his teammate Brodie for Player of the Game this week. His 14 rebounds were HUGE , and adding 4 blocks with ZERO turnovers, really set him apart. It’s always tough to choose when two players are equally deserving, but in the end, those blocks and zero turnovers gave Austin the edge.

Loss against Perth Redbacks (52 – 90)
Coaches notes
We faced the ladder-leading undefeated Perth Redbacks and it was a tough challenge for our team, going down by 38. Despite the score, the match felt closer at times. The Redbacks, with their height advantage, dominated us on the boards, outrebounding us 74 to 59.
Our shooting efficiency wasn’t our best at 17.2%, making it difficult to score. However, the effort from our girls was commendable; they demonstrated determination and spirit throughout the match. While we struggled offensively, our defense showcased resilience by contesting shots and limiting the Redbacks’ scoring opportunities inside.
In the third quarter Perth hit 4-5 three-pointers in quick succession, most of them with 1-2 seconds left on the shot clock, despite good periods of defense they just took their chances.
Despite the loss, we’ll be back in the lab this week to work on composure around the rim and rebounding. Overall, we remain proud of our team’s effort and unity.
Player of the game
I am thrilled to announce that this week’s Player of the Game is Eunice! Her growth and confidence on the court have been remarkable. Throughout the preseason and the start of the season, we focused on building her self-confidence, and it’s fantastic to see her progress. Eunice is now confidently crossing up defenders, taking her shots, and effectively utilising her strengths.
While her contributions may not always show up on the scoresheet, her dedication and improvement are evident in every game. Coaches have noticed the positive impact she is making, and it’s exciting to see her evolve into a valuable member of our team. Congratulations, Eunice! Keep shining!

Won against Perry Lakes Hawks (45 – 43)
Coaches notes
In a tight contest, our Suns battled the Hawks hard from the outset, keeping it close with their new-found resilience. After the first quarter, we trailed by 5. Our team talk outlined the need to attack the second quarter with our trademark defensive ball pressure.
In the second period we ratcheted up our D and fought back hard, taking a 22 – 19 lead into the main break. In the second half, we knew we were in for a physical contest until the end. The Hawks did a great job locking down the keyway, forcing us to find scoring solutions. We found our advantage in transition, where our defense, running and outlet passes carved out high percentage shots.
Once again, our end of game composure saw our Suns girls control the close, snatching the win on enemy turf. Knowing we can lean on outstanding team defense has been our means to gutting out tough wins. We’re proud of our girls’ efforts and defensive execution in our recent close games.
Player of the game
Mia Dobie: As a key on-ball guard, Mia was challenged to help steer our team at both ends. Mia’s effort was elite, energising our defensive ball pressure. When setting up our offense, Mia’s ball control and pace left opponents in the dust. Her awareness to sprint early on the fastbreak bagged us numerous easy baskets, relieving the scoring pressure against a tough defense. Mia was both efficient in her offensive execution and a warrior on defense. Amazing work, Mia.

Loss against Joondalup Wolves (68 – 107)
Coaches notes
We went down to the Joondalup Wolves in another game that was well within our reach. While the final score might suggest we were outplayed, the reality was far different.
We got off to a brilliant start, executing our game plan with precision picking up the ball early, breaking through the Wolves’ full-court press with ease, and forcing several turnovers that led to fast-break points. This momentum gave us an early lead, which we held until the closing seconds of the first quarter.
Unfortunately, turnovers, careless ball-handling, and missed opportunities both from the floor and the free-throw line continue to be our biggest challenges. The second quarter saw a significant drop in competitiveness, as we managed just 7 points compared to the Wolves’ 31.
Ryker Phillips’ consistent effort on both ends of the court, supported by Raymond Tafira, sparked a glimmer of hope for a comeback in the third quarter edging the Wolves 26–25. Ryker led all scorers with 22 points, while Raymond’s strong second half saw him finish with 13 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 steals.
Next week, we return home to face the Warwick Senators looking to bounce back and get our season back on track.
Player of the game
This week’s Player of the Round is Ryker Phillips. Simply put, Ryker continues to set the standard with his high-level play and unwavering commitment to the team. While he shines individually, it’s his team-first mentality, sharp basketball IQ, and ability to impact the game on both ends of the floor that truly set him apart.
Ryker’s competitiveness whether in games or at training is second to none. His consistency, focus, and willingness to do the hard work make him a key contributor and an example for others to follow.
Well done, Ryker. Keep raising the bar…

Cal Kwe – Another great game from Cal this week, stepping up and contributing in all areas. Love your work ethic and attitude, keep it up!!
Apart from dropping a WABL career high of 14 points, he was everywhere on defense with multiple steals and blocks.

Coaches notes
Suns Blue had a tough assignment against the undefeated Perry Lakes. The boys were no-doubt challenged, competing against taller opposition, but it was a great outing & a confidence building Sunday. Coach James & I were pleased with the overall display, as we stuck to our game strategy well, wrestling to get much of the tempo on our own terms. Our defense was the priority & we kept Perry Lakes to their lowest score of the season (59) something the Team should be proud of. We employed a number of Team defenses, throwing four different zones in the mix to be disruptive. As Coach James & I reviewed the game, the main take-away is the development so far. To execute multiple defenses means the boys are listening at practice & are courageous enough to implement what is asked of them in the heat of the game. These defensive strategies were foreign to the Team until pre-season, so the leap in learning is quite large. Against tall opposition, it was clear that our shots were affected many times & we were forced into more difficult attempts. Being tall is a genuine advantage, but our fight is there! We’ve got more off-ball work to do, however the signs of improvement are everywhere. The Team should be very encouraged with their performance.
Player of the game
With defense our priority, player of the game is shared by two players who followed instructions perfectly! Both players rotated well, on-court coached their peers & were supremely organised. Both players created jump balls, filled gaps when others were out of position, were tough, gritty & effective. Credit therefore to Artin & Sam for their impact! Offensively, they made the scoreboard, as they do each week. Sam’s now played two games in a row without a turnover, having one turnover in three weeks! Artin’s becoming a reliable court general & an important offensive cog! Special mention to Atticus who was excellent, again knocking on the door for player of the game. Congratulations Sam & Artin.

This game was a real test of character where the scoreboard doesn’t reflect the effort, heart and determination given on the court. Up against a stronger and more skilled opponent, our team showed courage by never backing down. Every player gave their all, supported each other, and kept pushing until the end. These are the moments that build grit, unity, and long-term growth. We saw glimpses of good play that show the potential within this group. Games like this are part of our journey this season, and each one brings valuable lessons. The girls need to learn from this, keep their heads high, and come back stronger next week.
Also a special shoutout and thank you to Daphne and Lily from U16G Blue – with our team short on numbers this week due to illness and injury, these two stepped up to play their first-ever U18s game. They held their own on the court bringing great effort and enthusiasm as they also both managed to score. Well done girls!
Player of the game
Ellie Indich is our player of the week. One of the toughest competitors on our team, Ellie consistently brings determination and effort every time she steps on the court. Her performance was a great example of the grit and mindset we need to succeed. Well done Ellie – keep leading by example.

It was an even contest for the first half, both teams had opportunities, but solid defense from both having an impact on shot completion success. After half time we executed a dominance outscoring the Wolves 43–20. Our defense tightened significantly while maintaining efficient and balanced offensive output from a number of players.
The result was largely affected by some of the following factors:
1. Interior Scoring Dominance – controlled the paint, through consistent drives and cuts and continual ball and player movement.
2. Defensive Pressure & Physicality – Our ability to execute on our scout and force them to become a contested shooting team rather than allowing them to play in trans or have easy looks was high level all day, had a contested shot rate for the game of 72%.
3. Game pace – Playing the game on our terms in regards to pace and poise exposed them defensively and we were able to capitalise on their lapses.

Honorable mentions for this round are:
Alfie Peacock – Solid defensive effort and ability to make good decisions (and knock down a few open shots)
Joshua Mahama – Took on the biggest defensive assignment for the day and won his battle convincingly.

A game where the final score line certainly doesn’t reflect just how close a match up, it really was.
We were even at 21 a piece at the end of the first quarter, before finding ourselves down by 10 at the half. The team refocused especially at the defensive end and worked together, sealing some great fast breaks and wonderful teamwork convincingly taking command to win the third. Unfortunately the last quarter snuck away from us where the experience of an established Willetton team showed.
The defensive hustle from everyone on the court and poise in offence marked an incredible turnaround from previous games. We’re gradually improving our offensive structures and working hard to understand the fundamentals. So good to see the team band together and show great improvement each week.
Player of the game
Skye, Grace and Elleanne.
Skye and Grace were a powerhouse offensively and were determined to claw back the deficit at the end of the game.
Elleanne’s hustle in defense was relentless and although picked up a few early fouls, never backed down.
